I was wondering that too. Maybe he's worried about how much he has pledged to match on the 1611 thread.
No worries on that score.

Update from the 1611 bank.
A great weekend for the bank, with lots of blessings given to the total.
We now need only 2,000 more to reach the terget we set for ourselves.
When Cola posts the total later, having got this weeks interest, we should have in the region of 280,500.
2,000 more and, the remaining 10k of my pledge and next weeks interest, then...Bingo....we have 300,000.
Then we can set our next target:)

grabs Barkeeper's Guide, mumbling Lilt! I never heard of a Lilt -- must be Irish, but what else. Why can't he just order something mundane like a Singapore Sling or a Harvey Walbanger...

Given this establishment provides food, it's part of british regulations that it must have an industrial powered dishwasher, per my grandmother's church. I love their dishwasher... 4 minutes and boiling hot, sparklingly clean dishes! Aparently it's the only way to ensure quality cleaning since hand-washing up can be so variable.

*slaps hand* Bad Timothy. I shouldn't have said that. True, but I shouldn't have said that. The widows in that church run and support it, pretty much as far as time is concerned, the younger crowd give the financial support. Works out extremely well.

It's true that the church population, pretty much across the denominational spectrum is weighted heavily towards folks above the age of 40, and even more so to folks above the age of 60. What younger people there are, tend to be married couples who are, presumably, in church because they are concerned with seeing that their children are raised in a faith environment.
I'm not sure whether this is cause for concern or not, though, because as someone in my twenties, I simply don't know if this is a new social phenomina or the continuation of an old one. Were things this way fifty years ago? It's possible that the natural course of things is simply for people to drift from religion when they hit college and then to drift back when they marry or reach old age. However, if this is a new thing, then it becomes a cause for concern, because there'd be little guarantee of anyone returning, meaning that the church population would drop drastically after the current generation of senior citizens passes away, and again when the babyboomers do.

Hey John, what's with the changing icon? :)

Hey John, what's with the changing icon? :)
It's a long story. :) As I've alluded to previously on the forum, I've got a lot of different stressful events going on in my life right now, that have been intensifying over the course of some years, and I think that that's been making my religious outlook a tad erratic as of late. It's weird that my version of snapping under intense pressure and stress is randomly changing religions, but there you have it. ;)
On Saturday, I suddenly got an intense urge to walk into a Roman confessional (I'm a "cradle Catholic", so I'm allowed) and confessed for the first time since I was a small child and took communion and was very puzzled through the whole process. I'm usually very sure of what I'm doing and why, but I've just experienced a large cloud of confusion with this whole issue, which in itself makes it even more confusing because I'm probably the most predictable individual on the planet, generally speaking. Sunday I took a trip to a Tridentine mass and declined communion. By today, I'm thinking "Hey, maybe I should visit that Lutheran church nearby sometime". I'm not really sure what's going on with me, to be honest. And that's why I've been so quiet about it. I think it must be my way way of dealing with stress in some strange manner. I can't tell you how many people have complained in the past about how unsurprising and predictable I am in everything I say and do, so this is extremely disconcerting to me, because it's so rare for me to act this way.
I enjoy being exactly the same -- I've had pretty much the same personality since I was 10 and like it that way. :) I like knowing exactly what I'm doing and why, and I almost aways do. I tend to plan very exactly in great detail and then go and try to carry out the plan. This is kind of weird.
Roman Catholicism is the last thing I need right now. More stress and sacrifices. Yipee. Like always being on the verge of homelessness, relying on folks throughout my life who are verbally abusive to me, and not being able to find a wife (Which is my dream and top priority, generally -- I'm very much a romantic, though I don't think it shows) aren't problems enough. Yet, there I was. It's strange.
Anyhow, that's why I switched to the Catholic icon for about 10 seconds and then to the Christian icon while I get all this sorted out. Maybe part of it is also my seperation from the Episcopalian parish where I was confirmed on the east coast. I'm very comfortable there, have had meetings and bible groups things with the priests, know a lot of the people who attend, enjoy the building and liturgy, etc.. I'm the type of person who really strongly takes to things and likes a routine and knowing what to expect and when stuff changes, it throws me for much more of a loop than the average person. Heck, I'll watch the same TV shows every week for years just because I'm used to them and that increases my enjoyment level versus having to figure out something new.

20th February 2006, 04:00 PM
Come to think of it, when I was 19 and first had my second wave of health problems hit and lost my first girlfriend and looked to be homeless and wifeless even back then, I took to Mormonism for a couple months (Of all things) after nearly a decade of atheism. I really do think there's something to the "stress makes me do odd things in terms of religion" theory. I suppose I must subconciously be looking for some kind of divine intervention, even though I've pretty much realized at this point that the Almighty seems to have no desire to help me out in the ways that I'd like.
I'd be happy with a fairly simple life -- a decent food budget, a stable living environment with just me and a wife, a wife, and cable TV and Internet, plus enough money to go to a bar and watch the Ravens each week doing football season, and I'd be pretty set. A lower middle class lifestyle and a small family, basically. But it's beyond my reach and it's beginning to really throw me for a loop. Nearly five years of dealing with this and the thought of another 60 or so is really disheartening.

This is something that I am really concerned about. I know there are some churches that have quite a few young people in them, but mine ain't one of them.
The problem is, the main thing that makes new young people feel like they belong in a church is the presence of other young people! Especially young, SINGLE people!

Filling five or six PAGES on your own helps a bit as well:D
(and I've done that before today).

Bah. I can only post every 30 seconds. That could get frustrating--I'm used to the other vbulletin I frequent were I'm an admin. Other folks have posting restrictions, *I* don't.
Just an hour or so of this and you suddenly realise you have filled 15 pages....lol
And you don't need loads of people either.
In fact more people often make things more difficult.
Just a few friends chatting tiogether, thats the way.
It's often the way in real life--a few friends chatting together is more fun than a big group.

Tim said a few posts back that I'd given you all a challenge.
I hadn't, but I will.
I've already pledged 1000 to the bank if this Alehouse ends by the start of Lent.
That stands and is as good as in the bank.
However, it is now 5.10pm here.
I leave work in under an hour, but will be back in just under 13 hours at 6am tomorrow. That will be 1am EST.
If this Alehouse is through the 1000 post mark and finished by the time I get back in here tomorrow morning, I'll chuck in another grand.
Go for it folks.

Hi everyone.
I said on Sunday that I might be off to the hozzie with my daughter and her asthma, and sure enough, it happened. I'm out for a few hours respite (ie couple of glasses of wine) and to go to DS's parent-teacher conference.
It's not a hospital - it's a prison. The doctors are so cautious (DD seems well on the mend to me, but they want to keep her in high dependency for at least another day).

She had her first attack when she was about 18 months, when we were still living in the US. The doctor there thought that it was just a one-off given that we have absolultely no risk factors in our family. 2.5 years later, she's been in hospital about 8 or 9 times. The last time was last June, so we thought she had grown out of it (we expect her to), but the cold virus (her trigger) that has been making the rounds here is a real humdinger and it finally got to her.

It's a bit like a stuffing.
170g (6oz) Breadcrumbs
110g (4oz) Suet
50g (2oz) Ham or Lean Bacon
2 Eggs
1 tsp Parsley, minced
1 tsp Sweet Herbs, minced
½ Lemon, rind only
Salt, Cayenne and Pounded Mace to taste
Shred the ham or bacon, chop the suet, lemon rind and herbs, ensuring everything is very finely minced.
Add a seasoning to taste, of salt, cayenne and mace and blend all thoroughly together with the breadcrumbs, before wetting.
Beat and strain the eggs, work these up with the other ingredients and the forcemeat will be ready for use.
When it is made into balls, fry to a nice brown, in boiling lard {or cooking oil}, or put them on a baking tin and bake for 30 minutes in a moderate oven.
As we have stated before, no one flavour should predominate greatly and the forcemeat should be of sufficient body to cut with a knife and to test that they are not dry and heavy.
For very delicate forcemeat, it is advisable to pound the ingredients together before binding with the egg.
But for ordinary cooking, mincing very finely answers the purpose.
Sufficient for a turkey, a moderate-sized fillet of veal, or a hare.
Note: In forcemeat for hare, the liver of the animal is sometimes added.
Boil for 5 minutes, mince it very small and mix it with the other ingredients.
If it should be in an unsound state, it must be on no account made use of.

I am not an expert, but I think you can get beef or pork suet, and it is fat, basically, and so is lard. I don't know if there is any difference between them.. and of course, yes, you can buy them!

If it should be in an unsound state, it must be on no account made use of.
sounds great!! What is Suet?

I'm still trying to figure out
1. What is suet exactly?
2. Where does one get suet?
3. Can you really buy lard?
I think suet is just some form of solidifed fat. not too sure really.
Both suet and lard can easily be bought from any supermarket or shop over here.

I have to go take my son to tap. I'll be back soon, start the party if we get the new Alehouse while I'm gone! :)
Oh, Okay! See you later!

I'll have some bitters please.
Breathes a sigh of relief -- my hand was getting tired on the tap and the frost was melting off the glass!
So, Black Sheep Best or ... hmm, "bitters" doesn't necessarily mean bitter ale, does it? Drat. Where's this one from again? Tries to size up jplowe's tastes by visual inspection. Glances bemusedly at the bottle of Angostura on the back of the bar... Something mixed, maybe?

I could probably post 30 posts on the different possible interpretations of "bitters" in an international Alehouse right now, but I'm busy earning my living.

I'm not too sure of the intended meaning in that particular post either. Perhaps the person in question will come back.

Arg, i didn't mean the Chinese room. It's actually a counter argument to the Turing test which is what i meant to say.
