'cause there's software upgrades and turnarounds coming next week. Make sure you know the alternate contact codes -- private email, MSN, other site addresses -- for anyone you absolutely have to chat with on a daily basis!

Thanks for telling us, Pamela! As far as I can tell, it is only 12 hours that we are totally without contact with each other
Then in the following week, I think we can still post, but there will be no special features? Like no characters or smilies or something?

12 hours if all goes well. I figure the best way to keep Murphy off Erwin's back is to be super-prepared for things to go wrong. You know, like remembering to carry an umbrella, to make sure it doesn't rain?
Seriously, a major database upgrade does offer lots of opportunity for things not to go well.

Trust me on this one, it's a monster this upgrade. I've done it twice on two relatively small forums, and think Erwin is a hero for being willing to do it on a forum of this size with no assistance--I know I would want to stay as far away from doing sommat like this as I could.

We can establish a temporary refugee camp at http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppchristian or http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppepiscop
It's not the same (trust me!) but you wouldn'e expect a refugee camp to be, would you?

Me: "Hi! We're going to be upgrading [Lotus Notes][Windows XP to SP2][Mac OS X.3 to X.4][Microsoft Office][name a piece of essential software] next week, so I'll need to use your computer for a few minutes."
User: "NO! You can't have my computer! My computer works fine just as it is! I'm going to lose all my email! I'll lose all my documents! The computer won't start up! The sky will fall! The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will appear!"
(after the installation of the upgrades)
Me: "So, how is your computer running? Any problems?"
User: "Oh, yeah. Fine. Everything's fine. I've got a deadline: there's some chocolate on the bookcase. Don't bother me..."

Why yes, I would.
When I go camping, I expect a comfortable bed, showers, hot water, a stove with an oven (preferably convection), a microwave, and expanded cable TV. I bring: china, crystal, pots and pans, the Kitchenaid mixer and food processor, the food and cook a lavish meal. This is "roughing it".
In a refugee camp, I'm willing to forego the microwave, the convection oven, expanded cable, and I'll leave my Kitchenaid mixer and food processor at home so I can experience "living out in nature" and "eating off the land".
With a very good red wine, of course... ;)

Hmmm. Well, that was quite the refugee camp! I wonder what all the out-of-work masseurs and champagne-servers are going to do now that the Alehouse is back. Service was great -- especially since it was equipped for a crowd, and only the two of us ended up finding it!
Maybe we should just leave the Alehouse Refugee tent in place for when we feel like going "slumming";)

I remember noticing those links before everything went down and thinking to myself that after the forum goes for a while a should really check them out. It would have perhaps been an idea to write them down beforehand...
