Im only 13 weeks (how about you?), but theres this spot on my lower left back (aside from other general back aches) that I first injured 13 years ago thats 'acting up' more than usual. The funny thing is I can walk up and down steps fine, its regular walking that kills everytime I put my left foot on the floor. It feels like somethings slipped out of place, but Ive never had it checked out or anything. And as careful as I try to be, it seems theres some slight, but precise movement or twist that will aggravate it. I think I twisted in my sleep funny last night. Usually if I rest for a day it goes away, its just this morning it was much worse than ususual.

Thanks again for your prayers everyone.

Wow! Moses is pregnant! Does Anonykat know?! :P

April,

Would a hot bath with epsom salt help?

Maybe alternating with a hot water bottle and ice pack? (20 min. max for each, alternating)

Feel better,

Maureen

I thought pregnant women weren't supposed to take baths, esp hot ones - might wanna check with your doc first. For a non-pregnant woman, though, there is nothing better for the back.

How about making hubby rub it? That's what I've been doing. :)

Oops!

Okay, non-pregnant single girl will just go in this here corner and refrain from giving any more advice! lol

Sorry!

Woohoo! Glad to hear you're feeling better!

That's awesome that you've started to do Orthodox prayers! Do you know how to cross yourself?

Take your right hand, and hold down your pinky and ring finger while pressing your middle finger, index finger, and thumb together. (The three fingers together represent the Trinity and the two fingers pressed down represent the dual natures of Christ.)

You then bring your hand up to your forehead saying "In the name of the Father" then down your abdomen "and the" then over to your right shoulder "son" then cross over to your left and say "and the Holy Spirit."

It sounds complicated in writing, but it's really easy. :)

This is how you bless yourself and other people and things. For example, if after putting your daughter down to bed at night you wanted to bless her, you would just cross yourself. :)

We also cross ourselves whenever the name of the Trinity is invoked during prayers, and whenever we start and end a prayer.

There are other times, but you'll pick that up as you go along. :)

God bless,

Maureen

Anonykat I must have missed the announcement! Congratulations!

The last I heard, you guys were going to adopt a baby from Ethiopia. Is that off?

Thanks, Maureen. I did learn the proper way to cross, the only thing I wasnt clear about was just crossing ourselves when were blessing other things. What about making the sign of the cross over our beds before we lie down? I thought I read somewhere that you can do that rather than crossing yourself... Also, do you know if the Orthodox can bless their home with Holy Water?

Since you have not seen a doctor that is what I would advise. I pray it is nothing serious but you need to find out for sure just in case.:prayer:

Basically whenever you want to bless something (be it object or another person) just cross yourself.

I'm not sure about the Holy Water thing...

I do know that since we just celebrated Theophany, priests are making appointments to come bless the homes with Holy Water.

If your husband is okay with this, you may want to make an appointment with Father Patrick about having your house blessed. :)

Preparation for House Blessing
Make an appointment with Father. Set the following items on a table: (1) Family icon, (2) Small bowl with holy water - if unavailable Father will provide, (3) Lighted candle in a holder, (4) List of all living and departed members of the family. (The whole house is normally blessed, but Father will bless only those areas in which he is escorted.)

Hope this helps!

Maureen

You can make the sign of the cross over things you want to bless (just like the priest blesses everyone, or coffee hour). If you want to bless your daughter, or your bed, make the sign of the cross over it with your hand in the normal position. The priest/bishop is the only one to bless things with his hand in the (ICXC) position. You don't just bless yourself every time.

You can bless things with holy water (though it IS home blessing time, talk to the priest for sure about coming to bless your home!), you can bless them with incense (a hand-held censer in the sign of the cross, if you have one), and you can bless people by anointing yourself or others with the oil from a lampada, if you have one.

I saw my chiropractor regularly during my pregnancy as my back would act up and I could barely walk sometimes.

You will notice that your gait will change as pregnant ladies tend to waddle during the last two trimesters.

prayers indeed from a fellow back pain sufferer (although mine obviously isn't from a pregnancy but rather from an auto accident I was in a few years ago).

Not sure if you can take it while your pregnant (check with your doctor next time you go for prenatal visits) but aleve is a miracle drug.

Be careful with aleve.

Have you read the warnings?

Yes you can. I have heard that it is traditional to bless your house on the first day of the month. You can pray, then splassh your rooms with holy water or carry a hand censer from room to room.

Here is one prayer:
O God our Savior, the True Light, Who was baptized in the Jordan by the Prophet John, and Who did deign to enter under the roof-tree of Zacchaeus, bringing salvation unto him and unto his house: do You, the same Lord, keep safe also from harm those who dwell herein; grant to them Your blessing, purification and bodily health, and all their petitions that are unto salvation and Life everlasting; for blessed are You, as also Your Father Who is from everlasting, and Your All; Holy, Good and Life; creating Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Here is a general prayer for blessing something:
O Creator and Author of the human race; Giver of all spiritual Graces, Bestower of eternal Salvation: do You, the same Lord, send down Your Holy Spirit with a blessing from on high upon this (name of object being blessed), that, fortified by the might of Your heavenly protection, it may be potent unto bodily salvation and help and aid unto all who shall make use of it; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who together with You, the Eternal Father, and Your All Holy, Good and Life?creating Spirit, we send up glory, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Here is a good article on the Orthodox Way of Life (http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/praxis/waylife.aspx) and different customs. No one needs to do all the stuff listed but these are some ways to bring the Church into your home.

Thank you Monica! And no, little brown baby is still very much in our plans, but it will obviously be delayed a few years now.

You must not have looked at my "sweet soul who needs prayer" thread. :)

As far as I know we lay people can bless stuff with holy water. That is part of the reason we take some home after it has been blessed in church. If in doubt, ask a priest though.

egads. In that case EvangeliGirl ignore what I said earlier.

Generally with medicine warnings I just kind of gloss over em (yeah I know this sin't the brightest thing to do).
