Born about the year 251, Antony heard the gospel message: “If you would be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me: He was twenty years old and rich, following the death of his parents, but he did as the gospel instructed and went to live in the desert, living an austere life of manual work, charity and prayer. His many spiritual struggles left him both wise and sensible and he became a spiritual guide for many who flocked to him. His simple rule of personal discipline and prayer was taken up and spread throughout Christendom. He died peacefully in the desert in the year 356 at the great age of 105, asking that he be buried secretly, so that his person might be hidden in death as in life. --Celebrating the Saints

Saint Anthony the great is one of the greatest Coptic saints , he is the father of all monks in all the world , the first monastery in the world which related to him is in the red sea desert "Egypt" it is coptic orthodox monastery and we think that his relics is under the church there , we will celebrate his feast in 30 January ( old calendar )

Yes I am :) My avatar is a coptic icon of Sts. Joachim and Anna.
I thought a coptic icon would be appropriate since St. Antony was from Alexandria.

St. Athanasius the Great wrote a biography on St. Antony (or as we call him "Antonious," which is actually my baptism name).

coptichymns.net also has some of his letters that he "wrote," but the website is down for now. Once it goes back up, I'll provide you the exact link.
If you ever get a chance to visit Egypt, go to his mountain at like 2 or 3 after midnight and walk up to the cave where he prayed. At night, the sky is beautiful, and it's as if the stars are so close you can touch them. And going in the cave was a blessing, but takes a while till you get there. I have pictures. When I find them, I guess I can scan them and post them here.
And the monastery nearby is huge and beautiful. It is called the Monastery of Sts. Antonious and Paul (the hermit "monk" that St. Antonious met).
God bless.

Beautiful! I can't choose which hymn is my favorite one, yet. I would like to also put it as my hearing caption.
At the moment, i have a Cat Stevens clip as my caption. I will be changing that one day once i find a hymn that i like.

Sometimes I forget that most people don't understand Greek.. ;)
So here is the English words for the hymn...
Apolytikion to St. Anthony...
With the streams of your tears, you did cultivate the barreness of the desert, and by sighing from the depths of your soul, you have made your labors to bear fruit a hundredfold, and you became a luminary shining with miracles upon the world. O Anthony, our holy father, intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.
