After the run of 4 Super Bowls in the late 70s the battle cry for Steelers fans everywhere was for the Steelers to win a 5th Super Bowl. This would put a ring on every finger and one on the thumb (for the team who had won 4 Super Bowl rings), hence the cry "One for the Thumb!"

At least they have admitted what the rest of us have known since the play happened. I have seen some messed up calls before, and errors are part of being human but this one defied logic. It was like he was trying to think of a reason for the interception not to stand.

Why is it called FOOTball anyway? If you are allowed to grab the ball with your hands, hey, that's HANDball! :)

As for winning, I never got the point why it should play any role for me who wins no matter what sports you are talking about, unless it's me or someone I know. But total strangers, why on earth should it be of any significance to me?

Whatever. That comment comes across as being as wrong as me going to Europe and asking them why they are not NFL fans. If I went to any European country and did that, I would be laughed at. And rightly so. Soccer in the United States is soccer. Handball is a game that is similar to raquetball without racuqets, played indoors on an enclosed court. As for your armpitball comment, it is so silly that I won't even respond to it. In the United States if you called soccer football, people would look at you like you were strange. Now, back to the original purpose of this thread, which was to discuss with AMERICANS who they want to win the Super Bowl.

Btw, before you jump to the harsh comments, just know that Finland is one of the few European countries that sends the Super Bowl live, has won the European league a few times, has a few football players in the NFL and several more in the NCAA.

No, I was just reminding you that we Americans are no the only ones who come across as being silly when we comment on things going on in the world that we have no knowledge of. There are some of us who take football very seriously, so for you to mock football when you probably know very little of it just doesn't come across as good form at all.

Further, burning the American Flag to me is second only to sacrilege on the list of taboos. It is an insult to both my grandfathers who fought to liberate Europe from the control of the National Socialists and defend the great country of the United States of America from those who would do us ill.

I am sorry I did not mean to finger Finland per se. It is just that the person making the comments has a Finnish flag for their nationality. I think it is best we all show respect to each other's nationality and not make such comments which might deeply offend other nationalities. Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way.

In light of a number of comments made on this thread I thought I would bring some historical information to it.
The game of football, in various forms, is quite old and has been popular in Europe for centuries. In the early 19th century a football player named William Webb Ellis, supposedly out of frustration, picked up the ball in his arms and ran. Thus giving birth to union rugby (which is different from league rugby). The realities are probably a bit more complicated than that, however, several rugby pitches have borne Ellis' name and the first international rugby award as named for him.

The ball was given a new shape, which is basically the same in modern rugby, for easier carrying by a runner. Rugby came to North America, and is popular throughout the Anglo speaking world. Thus the reality is calling American football "football" is a misnomer. As the game is really an Americanized form of union rugby. All three games have their roots in soccer, hence rugby clubs will be titled "XXXX Rugby Football Club." But in remains clear that American football is much more similar to union rugby than it is to its grandfather, soccer.
See pages like:
http://www.rugbyfootballhistory.com/originsofrugby.htm
http://www.nrl.com/history/index.cfm
http://academic.scranton.edu/student/AMANNJ2/History.html

Outside of the United States and Canada American football has little appeal. The reach of soccer is quite international with serious clubs in virutally every corner of the world. Anyone that says the Europeans don't take their football every bit as seriously as American take American football really needs a reality check.
I love American football, was an all state player in high school and would have played college ball at least if not for the busting of my leg. In fact I still don't walk right largely owing to the screws that hold my bones together. Would do it all over again, just the same as well. However, I do freely admit that American football is not the world's most exciting game to watch. Assuming a well balanced match 5 or 6 plays decide the game, the other 70-100 more or less cancel each other out. Thus you sit through a three plus hour game to watch the four or five minutes that decide the outcome.

At the end of the day, as fun as it may be, it is just a GAME. When taken so seriously that it leads to hostile comments there needs to be some serious priority checks.

My number one pet peeve in high school, and I am sure everyone that has really played the game can sympathize, were the guys that would come up and ask you what you thought "we" needed to do to beat "XXXX." I always wanted just to say something along the lines of "the team needs to provide solid run stop defense and the offense needs to aviod third and long situations. You, on the other hand, sit in the grand stands and don't need to do a single thing." I guess I just don't understand people that get caught up with a game they don't play and a team they don't belong to.

What you Europeans fail to understand is that football in the United States is bigger than Soccer is in the rest of the world and bigger than Hockey is in Candada and Northern Europe.

American football is popular in the United States among about 300 million people. World Cup soccer, and soccer in general, is popular with the other 3 billion people on the planet.
I suppose the only way this might be even slightly valid is to say that Americans have allowed American football to become so outragously commericalized that the players make obscene salaries and average people cannot no longer afford to go to NFL games.

Data on the absurd increases in NFL costs can be found here:
http://www.leagueoffans.org/nflfancost03.html

Because we all know it's better if it costs more, that's just the American way.

At NFL football games, they don't have to put up fences and moats to keep the crowd off the field. At NFL football games, people aren't crushed to death by surging mobs of fans. So I don't think Americans take NFL football as seriously as the rest of the world takes soccer.

I can think of dozens of riots related to NFL games, generally championships though. If you read the rest of what I wrote you will see that I agree, soccer is more popular.
Though I don't think soccer hoolganism has a lot to do with the game of soccer, as much as it has to do with people that like to break things and fight.

Hey Steeler fans: I recommend you guys 'steel' yourselves for a great disappointment.

Here are some verses for you:

[W]e also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

I wish you pure joy, my brothers and sisters!
