Luke 22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Interesting... the sword of the Spirit is the Word of G-d... speaking G-d's truth is a sword that divides...

My Dear Visionary:
I offer my humble opinion. These were the final verses describing instructions to the disciples prior to going to the garden of Gethsemane. Clearly, Y'shua knew how it would turn out.
Y'shua preached a message of love, not violence, so the thought of a weapon must have been a metaphor. These were [and still are] dangerous times. Without Y'shua's supernatural protection, the mobs would have harmed Him many times in scripture -- most likely the disciples too.
Although the disciples didn't quite get "it" yet, Y'shua was soon going to die and would no longer be with them bodily. They needed to be prepared to take care of themselves and to be on their guard to take the message of the gospel unto all of the nations.
This is my take, I'll ask Him when I have the chance if I was right. Please search the scriptures, pray, meditate on this and let the Ruach HaKodesh be your guide to the Truth of the matter.
Shalom,
CovenantRay :prayer:

Sounds to me that it may mean that someone who does not have the spirit with them may be because of their obsession with material things, and that they should let go of these things.
lol, but the holy spirit isn't something that can be purchased?
maybe the letting go of material objects with your heart, truely letting go, will then allow you to receive the spirit of our l-rd.

Read "The difficult words of Jesus" by David Blivin and Roy Blizzard (Blivin was a student of Dr. Fluser I believe at Hebrew University)..........he addresses this very point.

Why?How about if it was in today's lingo.... if you want protection that bad, sell your clothes, run around naked, but at least you will have your ozzi to protect you.
