I have been to his church and listen to him on the radio at times. It's sad news to hear. I know others on here that go to his church on a regular basis. John, his family and his congregation are all in my prayers.

I am so sorry to hear they are going through this. I lost my uncle to this last year...a long battle. God did allow us time with him; in fact the cancer went into remission for quite a while. But when it came back, it was quick. I am not sure what the statistics are on this and recovery. But I think how beautiful it is the Glory he is giving God through this trial. His attitude is one we should all take. :prayer:

For example, is there anything greater to hear and believe in the bottom of your heart than this: “God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him” (1 Thessalonians 5:9-10)?

God has designed this trial for my good and for your good. You can see this in 2 Corinthians 1:9, “Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” And in 2 Corinthians 1:4-6, “He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God . . . If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation.”

So I am praying: “Lord, for your great glory, 1) don’t let me miss any of the sanctifying blessings that you have for me in this experience; 2) don’t let the people of Bethlehem miss any of the sanctifying blessings that you have for us in this; 3) grant that the surgery be successful in removing cancer and sparing important nerves; 4) grant that this light and momentary trial would work to spread a passion for you supremacy for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ; 5) may Noël and all close to me be given great peace—and all of this through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever, Amen.” I hope God will lead you to pray in a similar way.

With deep confidence that

“Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting.
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 15:54-57 :prayer:

might straighten him up: :P

That is a really foul thing to say. You know, I had a humbling experience today. A gal that seemed very smug and satisfied when horrible things happened to others. Found herself in a terrible situation herself.. The Good Lord Does have a way to allow you to be humbled.. I have made regular acquaintance with prayer that it will not only not happen to others - but also to me either. There is NEVER reason to wish ill on anyone. This is not the Christian attitude.

Brother John's letter has been posted on our Church's Prayer Chain.

:prayer: for Mr. Piper, his family, and Bethlehem Baptist Church. I love the man, his great heart for God, and his wonderful books. Don't Waste Your Life is especially stirring and challenging. I praise God that John Piper has not wasted his life but has used it for for the glory of God. I pray that God will give John much more time in which to do so, if it is His will.

Thank you everyone, for your prayers for Pastor John. He has been a great blessing to our church, and I hope that God will not bring him home just yet.

Now as for your post, Matthew, I do not appreciate it in the slightest. Bethlehem Baptist Church is not apostate. There are many true believers who attend this church, and I prefer to think that I am one of them. For you to rejoice at another man's suffering because he believes in post-tribulation eschatology is contrary to the Gospel, and you ought to repent for this.

Actually, I didn't hear about this for quite awhile. Even last Sunday at church, John didn't make any mention of it. In retrospect, the passion and zeal with which he preached his sermon (a common trait in all of his sermons) is another testimony to the peace that he has in Christ.

By the way Matthew, as long as I have returned to this thread, I feel that I must once again address your earlier post. I find it unthinkable that you would rejoice at the suffering of a brother in Christ. And for all the reasons to dislike a man, you have chosen his disagreement with you on non-essential doctrine. I reread the "warning" that you gave us about Pastor John, and it appears that you are warning us about him because of the following reasons:

Piper's belief in 5-point Calvinism
The biographies that Piper has written about Saint Augustine and C.S. Lewis (both of whom were very godly men)
Piper's failure to believe in KJV-onlyism
Piper's belief in the post-tribulation rapture (which was the almost unanimous position of the church until 1829)
The affiliation of Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Baptist World Alliance, which, for whatever reason, has been declared anathema by an independant, fundamentalist church
Piper's attendance at Wheaton College and Fuller Theological Seminary
That Piper speaks at ecumenical forums
These are not valid reasons to declare a person anathema, and they surely are not valid reasons to rejoice due to another person's suffering. Would you like to know why I choose to be respectful of all Christians (even Roman Catholics)? I have spent a good deal of time with non-Christians, people who hate the Gospel of our Lord. And I know that even a Roman Catholic, who believes in many unbiblical doctrines, has infinitely more in common with me than a Gentile unbeliever. Would you like a small sampling? Visit the non-Christian religions forum, and read the writings of wicked, polytheistic, idolatrous, God-hating heathens who consciously blaspheme the Lord Jesus, and then I think you will appreciate how much you have in common with John Piper.

From John's web site:

Update on Surgery

February 14, 2006
1:30 p.m.: We got word that John Piper is out of surgery. His wife, Noël, reported that the procedure went “beautifully.” So praise God with us and continue to pray with us for John’s recovery. We will keep you updated.
11:30 a.m.: The doctors reported to Noel that John’s prostate has been removed successfully and things are going well from what they can tell. They are now beginning reconstruction. After that, Pastor John will have about a 1-hour recovery period before he is taken to his room where Noel will be able to see him.

Prayer: Please pray for the recovery period and the coming days of healing.

Pastor John surprised me in his sermon last Lord's Day, when he said that he would try to give one more sermon at the end of February, before he leaves on his sabbatical. I'm amazed by how much God has strengthened him for this.
