Normally I'd give a bible, but since this person has the Concordia NIV study Bible, I can't beat that. What would be a good thing?

Also a copy of Daniel Preus' book "Why I am Lutheran."
and Luther's Small Catechism (provided they didn't receive one during their confirmation class.)

Another good gift (though certainly no replacement for the Small Catechism) is "Listening to Your Life: Daily Meditation with Frederick Buechner".

I've started reading it this year, and I plan to go through all the daily meditations (each one is really short to read, so you have more time to reflect upon it). It's really good and uplifting.

Johanne Gerhard, Sacred Meditations (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=3g2XfbSB1p&isbn=1891469193&itm=2)

Excellent devotional for Lutherans. It will leave you in tears of repentance as well as tears of joy.
