News Brief – December 27, 2005

On January 6, NBC will begin a new series entitled The Book of Daniel.

While the public has not seen the program, NBC is promoting "The Book of Daniel" as a serious drama about Christian people and the Christian faith. The main character is Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted Episcopal priest whose wife depends heavily on her mid-day martinis.

Webster regularly sees and talks with a very unconventional white-robed, bearded Jesus. The Webster family is rounded out by a 23-year-old homosexual Republican son, a 16-year-old daughter who is a drug dealer, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter. At the office, his lesbian secretary is sleeping with his sister-in-law.

NBC and the mainstream media call it "edgy," "challenging" and "courageous." The series is written by Jack Kenny, a practicing homosexual who describes himself as being "in Catholic recovery," and is interested in Buddhist teachings about reincarnation and isn't sure exactly how he defines God and/or Jesus. "I don't necessarily know that all the myth surrounding him (Jesus) is true," he said.
NBC considers The Book of Daniel a positive portrayal of Christ and Christians.

How is that not a hate crime or slander? I dare NBC to try to air such a show about Moslems or Jews.

Unfortunately, this is the "Christianity" a lot of outsiders see. They never see people like my friend Fr. Ignatius, who is a humble monk. If they regularly saw people like him - and we can all be people like Fr. Ignatius if we want- then they would have a different view of Christians and Christianity. I must take some of the blame that the world has such a terrible opinion of Christians. Mea culpa.

The show sounds rather immature. Even if it does get aired, it won't make it anywhere close to a full season.

Unfortunately, this is the "Christianity" a lot of outsiders see. . .

The greatest harm caused by deviant teachings by those who call themselves Christians, yet reject Christ's Church, are the impressions they make on the world. My sister is anti-Christian, largely due to the negative association she makes with Christianity and the so-called "religious right." Because she can't stand that group of Protestants, she rejects Christianity in full. This is an error in judgement, but she's obviously not alone in having such impressions. All she knows is that she doesn't want to be like them, so she rejects Christianity. Shows like that just solidify the impressions some have and make it harder for the truth to reach people.

TV shows like these are the result of a hard drive within the entertainment media to produce ever more shocking garbage. Instead of quality programming the competion has become who can produce the most shocking flith to get people to watch it for the same reason some people like to watch traffic accidents.

Maybe it's time to considering throwing the TV away.

I know the AFA is calling for a boycott. We live in Tupelo, MS, home of the AFA so there is sure to be a lot of publicity over it around here.

The problem with boycotts: they generate publicity. Publicity for a show is good news for the show. It sounds like a fairly mediocre and doomed show anyway, a boycott will only [paradoxically] boost it. The people who say they are "boycotting" it wouldn't watch it even if the boycott weren't on, so what's the point?

Oh, they're always boycotting something or someone. It seems it's what they do.

I've seen ads for this...certainly don't watch it if it offends you. I have quirky tastes (liked the movie "Dogma", etc), so I'll reserve judgment until I actually see it. In a weird way it might point out some of the ways that we fail to do the faith justice (the impact of secularism, denominational troubles, church politics, etc). Dunno...

Most TV is trash...I don't watch a lot these days. I love a good book...

Yes because we should really be watching movies that mock God. The Heroine of the film Dogma is an abortionist, and the "prophets" (Jay and slient Bob) are two dope smoking morons. The RCC is so racist it removes all references to the 13th apostle because he was black. God is a woman who is trapped in a body because in this terrible religious society we don't allow people to be euthanized and it isn't until this abortion doctor is able to pull the plug on the old man that the world can be saved. It needs to be saved because the RCC has established a doctrine that would allow two exiled angels back into heaven.

You really ought to have a sit down and chat with your priest about watching this kind of trash.

Well you know there are those folks that don't find mocking God and morality to be funny, who'd have thought? Humorless me just doesn't find an abortion doctor saving the world by killing an old man to be funny. Because you know by watching and finically supporting movies that support abortion we're really doing the Lord's work. That's really something a Christian should be laughing at, a person who makes a living murdering children. Schindler's List was just a riot.
