[Mod Hat On]

Staff have decided to close the other thread as we were having some trouble with rule violations in that thread and we felt that it was causeing too much of a temptation or stumbling stone for some.

But we know that members do want to support each other in a decision to avoid debating in General Theology.

So, this new thread is being created.

Instead of focusing on how some members of GT are not Eastern Orthodox and implying that they are "heretics", why not focus on why members can not discuss differences in a civil manner within the rules of CF?

Here are some of the rules that fit this discussion:

1.1 You may discuss another individual's beliefs or religious organization but you will not harass, insult, belittle, threaten, defame or flame the individual (member or non-member) as this is considered personal (ad hominem) attacks in posts, PMs and any other communication within the site. This includes, but is not limited to:
a. Directly calling another member “cultist”, “heretic” or “bigot” as these are personal attacks and are not conducive to civil discussion.
b. Calling famous individuals derogatory names (unless it is a well-known nickname) as this may be considered defamation.
1.2 You will not directly call another member or his or her religious organization a “cult”, “heretic”, “demonic” or “satanic” but you may discuss doctrines, teachings, practices or writings of other religious organizations as long as empirical evidence is provided.
1.3 You will only post negative statements about another individual’s belief or religious organization (including non-Christian religions) with objective evidence provided. Members are allowed to say “The doctrines X church is false because of Y scriptures and Z other relevant evidence”.
1.4 You will not misquote another member regardless of context.

and:

2.1 You will not do anything on the site that disrupts the peace and harmony of this forum. This includes, but not is limited to:
a. Deliberately reposting a post, thread, image, Chatbox post or anything else that has been removed by a staff member for a breach of forum rule.
b. Baiting where a member harasses another member to the point where he or she might retaliate in a flame.
c. Brinking where a member deliberately does things to push the boundaries of the forum rules.

and:

4.1 You will not post, attach, use or send any posts, PMs, links, images or files:
e. puts down or belittles Christianity as a whole, a Christian group or denomination or God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Bible or any other Christian objects of significance (as this is a Christian website after all).

I notice that members who post in General Theology seem to have more staff actions on their records. When this boycot is over, maybe TAW members could encourage each other to present themselves in the General Theology area in such a way so that they follow CF rules.

If it is a mark of extreme meekness, even in the presence of one’s offender, to be peacefully and lovingly disposed towards him in one’s heart, then it is certainly a mark of hot temper when a person continues to quarrel and rage against his offender, both by words and gestures, even when by himself. St. John Climacus, “The Ladder of Divine Ascent,” (Boston: Holy Transfiguration Monastery, 1978), Step 8: On Freedom From Anger and On Meekness

Again, this is a new thread to support each other in the plan to boycott posting in General Theology. Do keep the above rules in mind when posting here in this thread, or anywhere in CF, including GT.

I haven't posted in GT in a long time, but I may do so once in awhile.

No offense, but TAW gets a little dull.

One of the problems with GT for me is that I can't always find time every day to visit CF. It's tough to do a good job on one of those threads unless one can take a look at it and post every day.

Another problem is that those threads tend to take off and grow overnight into multi-page monstrosities. I hate to join in threads that are already four or five pages long.

I would like to politely suggest that we Orthodox take great pains not to argue with each other or the Roman Catholics in GT.

I know there are points of dissension, but it doesn't do any good to air those in a general forum like GT.

When Oblio, Philip, and I used to post back in the old days at TBTSNBN, there was an unspoken agreement with the Catholics that we would not argue the papacy, the filioque, etc., but would form a united witness to the Protestants, who sorely need the apostolic faith.

I think this is a great idea! In fact, I would be willing to help out by starting a thread here: http://www.christianforums.com/f459-christian-philosophy-ethics.html that is just for a debate between RC and EO in which only those two faiths could debate.
