So at your parish, after the Epistle, does the Reader (or anyone else) say "The Alleluia in the [whatever number] tone" before the choir sings the Alleluia?

If so, does what the choir sings actually change with the cycle of tones?

I ask because in every instance I've seen in which the Reader actually says "The Alleluia in the 5th tone" or whatever it is that week, the choir sings the same Alleluia tone (in the OCA it's invariably Alleluia Tone 1, can't really tell in other churches) anyway. Other churches just leave the declamation of the tone out. So what does yours do?

Our choir director always does that la LA la LA thing and they start singing. The whole tone thing is a total mystery to me. It's not the same tune every week.

I say "tune" because I don't know if "tune" and "tone" mean the same thing.

Nope. Which is good because Rdr. Christopher is Tone deaf :)

We always sing the same Tone for the Alleluia. IIRC, in Russian Litugical music a Tone is a Tune (ufonium could give us details)

We change with the tonal schedule. There is a book that we keep by the choir that reminds us what the tone is but our choir books have all the tones so it is easy enough as the reader will tell us. BTW, sometimes the tone for the Alleluyah's do not match the official tone for that Sunday, but will vary a bit. There is a lexicon that prescribes which one (the book we keep by the choir.)

The reader either says Alleluia or says the first of (4) verses that the Alleluias are the refrain to, if there are 4 instead of the normal 3. We use the same one, but then, we have reduced ALL our music to a single selection (not necessarily a tone as we mix all sorts of traditions and styles), perhaps 2 selections, instead of keeping the weekly cycle of tones. It's supposed to encourage congregation participation, but it drives me batty, as I am used to rotating tones for litanies, alleluias, antiphons, cherubic hymn, Our Father, etc....They each have their connotation and serve to set the mood of the church calendar. The Church gave us a rotation of tones as much as it gave us a rotation of hymns/readings...couldn't we encorporate that at least a little? bah.

I know a choir director who does the la la la thing but still can't carry a tune! The parish she goes to is very proud of their choir, and yet this lady has a horrible voice. A friend of mine's face cringed when I mentioned her singing.

Yes, our Reader announces which tone for the Allelulias, and yes, we sing that tone. And we're OCA.
