View Full Version : What Do You Watch?

I asked about books, so it is only fitting to ask about other entertainment. You obviously use the internet and a computer, so let's talk movies and tv.
Do you watch Hollywood movies? If so, which ones? If not, why not?
Do you watch TV? If so, what? Do you have a regular program or show you watch?
If you watch neither of these, what do you watch if anything?
Do you have Biblical support or passages for your reasons either way?
God Bless!

I typically don't watch alot of TV, as of late however, I've been watching Bones and then House on Tuesday nights. So I'm up to 2 hours a week, plus the morning traffic and weather in the morning.
No biblical support for either of them.
As for hollywood, I try not to give them money, so I don't want to see movies at the movies unless I'm pretty sure I'm going to approve of it. For example, I will be seeing Chronicals of Narnia at the movies... but I wouldn't see any movies that I knew to have nudity, or or positive views of immoral behavior. I perfer to watch movies where the bad guy is the bad guy... not the immoral bad guy is the good guy and they portray him in ways that would make us want him to "win" so to speak.
I'll visit your book thread tomorrow... I'm off to bed shortly.
g'night,

We rent movies all the time, my favorite are old classics, black and whites -- Gary Cooper, Carey Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Kathryn Hepburn, Spencer Tracy Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Dean Martin, Shirley Temple, Yule Brenner you get the idea. But I like the new stuff, and pretty much see all the new releases. I do not like going to the movie theater - cramped and uncomfortable. I like to wait for movies to come out and then rent them to watch in the comfort of our own home and cheaper. (I think I am becoming anti-social in my old age)
Do you watch TV? If so, what? Do you have a regular program or show you watch?
I do not have satellite here tired of paying for nothing but horrible customer service, so I only watch regular TV. We don't do allot of TV Usually PBS is on for the children’s things. Otherwise:
CSI -> All of them Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays but I will be missing out on them during the spring due to classes
Extreme Home Makeover Sundays here
Criminal Minds I believe on Wednesdays I have missed them the past couple of weeks
Close to Home I think switched to Friday nights.
House --> when I get a chance I get a kick out of his character
Sometimes when I can I catch OPRAH and Dr Phil (He is from my town and old High School)
Occasionally I watch the Pastors on the Christian Station but I have no regular one I watch.
Do you have Biblical support or passages for your reasons either way? God Bless!
No, not really, but I am not in the mood to be lectured. ;) I believe if you think it is a sin, you shouldn't do it. I can say, I do believe that watching allot of negative on TV does bring me down. Truly we just don't get to watch that often other than renting when we have the time.

I go to the movie theatre like once a year so renting DVDs is usually the way I go if I want to see something.
For TV shows I like 7th Heaven, Third Watch, Rescue Me, The O.C., Desperate Housewives, Degrassi: The Next Generation...

For me its:
CSI, and CSI Miami
House
Lost
Invasion
Surface
Threshold
and a few others here and there (I only have the good ole Bunny ears :))
aside from the TV I listen to all the "kids" shows on AFR (American Family Radio) on Saterday mornings when I get a chance. (the pond, down Gilliad Lane, Adventures in Odysey, and others, I guess I am still a kid at heart).
As far as movies, I used to go all the time, but now I only go a few times a year because most of what comes out now is just so stupid that I do not want to waste my $ on them. But when I do go it is usally to a sci-fi or action movie. (just saw Harry Potter last night).
I do rent quite a bit of DVD's tho'.
The bigest factor that I use to judge if I am going to watch it or not is language, sex, and vulgarity. any of the three and I will not be watching it. Just one of my many convictions.

TV - CSI, Lost (when not a rerun), and Everybody Hates Chris (recently). I don't know why, but I like that show. It is funny and surprisingly not at all crude or "Chris Rock" style. Family funny.
Movies - I admit, I love to go to the movies. I can never go because we have not had a babysitter ever in the 7 years we have had kids. So, if I want to go, they come, too. Which means we see kid's movies. We recently saw "Chicken Little". If I'm out of town on business or something, I'll try and take in a movie in the evening since I'm away by myself. Other than that, we have DishNetwork and sometimes record movies off of HBO or Starz. We don't watch movies that we know will be offensive or trash. We try to stick to movies that are acceptable, but sometimes we make a mistake on one.
By Biblical support, I meant if someone did NOT watch TV or movies for that reason. I know there are some who feel the Bible says we shouldn't go to the movies, for instance. I was just curious as to the Biblical reasons since I am not familiar with any of those passages. Not judging, just learning.

Saturday Mornings my youngest son (5) and I watch the "This Old House/Ask This Old House/Inside This Old House" shows on A&E. When I was a kid it was cartoons on sat morn but you can watch them anytime now...

I love to watch TV, go to movies. Just saw Narnia. Great movie, follows the book pretty well, except I thought Susan was blonde  Some movies are Big Screen movies and some are wait-until-it-comes-out-onDVD movies.
I can't wait for Chicken Little to come out on DVD, or Hood Winked, that looks so funny!
I watch little TV. When I do, I love FOX News and Who's Line Is It Anyway? That is so my sense of humor.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I do enjoy watching movies. I don't like the ultra gory (like Saw) or teenager movies though. I like that they have finally made the comics into movies. Those are the movies I enjoy the most. I watch HGTV, Discovery, and sometimes the Sci-FI channels. I stay away from ABC, NBC and CBS stuff. I am so tired of the reality show crud and all the detective/police/law drama shows out there. It doesn't spark an interest for me.
The shows I do enjoy watching is Mythbusters, Monk and anything on HGTV. And no, there is no biblical backing up on what I watch...:D

OK, you got me. I watch Star Trek, because it clearly reveals God's plan for the human race, and is prophesied multiple times in Christ's sermon on the mount, and the second letter to the Thessalonians. :D

^_^
I watch The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, on a reasonably regular basis.
That's pretty much it. I was really into Joan of Arcadia but they canceled it.
The last movie I saw was the recentish Bridget Jones movie. Fun fluff.
Here are the next 10 movies in my netflix queue:
Under the Tuscan Sun
Practical Magic
The Merchant of Venice
The Prince and Me
The Magdalene Sisters
Persuasion
Pride and Prejudice
Mrs. Brown
The Devil's Arithmetic
Luther
I like period pieces if you haven't guessed.

TV...
FOX News Channel
Especially "Fox and Friends" in the morning
I like to catch some of "The O'Reilly Factor" in the evening...especially his "Talking Points".
The recent coverage of the Alito hearings has been good too.
Movies??...
Way too expensive! I'd rather spend the money on a good meal in a nice restaurant!

I've got a 3 1/2 year old and a 21m old, so the majority of our time is in the Wiggles, Little People, Dumbo, or the Lion King (my kids love the old Disney stuff), and Madagascar
When I get time to actually watch TV, I like CSI (Mon and Thurs), Criminal Minds, HomeMakeOver, Law and Order CI (but only the one with Vinnie D'Nofrio), Rachel Ray, Emeril, Iron Chef, Gardening by the Yard (HGTV), and some things on History if it interests me.
As far as movies, I like a good mystery. All the old Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple type things.

Hmmm...well we are movie freaks! We love to go to the movies, but we have 5 kids so that can be an expensive venture!! We usually go to the "dollar movies" (which are never a dollar anymore!) when we go. We try to keep it to PG13 or better (especially if the rating is due to vulger, sexual reasons). But mostly we rent a lot.
As for TV: The only must see's around here are ER (been watching from day 1), Lost, Invasion, CSI (all of them) and dare I admit the Super Nanny (my hubby hates this one!).
The kids watch some cartoons, Smallville, Cosby reruns, The Nanny reruns, Everybody Loves Raymond reruns....
We also watch some Christian programming. We don't have cable or anything so we only get to choose from TBN and Cornerstone so we definitely have to pick and choose. The one program we LOVE to watch is Way of the Master. Not sure if you all have seen it but it is a really great program with Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort where they just address basically witnessing to the world. We also like to watch some preachers (Adrian Rogers, Greg Laurie, Charles Stanley, Michael Youseff (sp?), and a few more.).

Had to give up the tube. When I realized that I was spending more time watching the box than reading our LORD's holy Word and talking to Him in prayer, I figured why not remove the temptation altogether? Besides, the crazy thing cussed at me occasionally.
Seriously, life at my house changed for the better to a surprising degree after we banished the thing. I realize now that through the windows of our eyes and ears we take things into the treasury of our hearts, and that what goes in will eventually come out. When we shut the window to the world, we began to spend more time reading the Word as a family and having more family devotional times. I realized that although all the things that can be taken in through the tube can be seen on the street in our daily lives, I was inviting it into my home, bringing it into the sanctum sanctorum, which is supposed to be dedicated to my Saviour alone. I can no longer in good conscience do so.
I miss Andy Griffith, but the benefits have outweighed the loss to an incalculable degree.
Just my two cents. Peace to all.

I agree with you and spent a lot of my childhood growing up without a tv, but there's nothing like vegging in front of a favorite program for an hour or two to unwind and relax after a 12 hour day!
I watch the following programs regularly:
Medium
E-Ring
Commander in Chief
Hal Lindsey's International Intelligence Briefing
In Justice
Irregularly I watch:
According to Jim
Hope & Faith
Nanny 911
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
In season:
American Idol
the Olympics
Oh, btw, I have TV Guardian, so it nerfs all the bad language.
Note: I never rent R rated movies and try to avoid anything with lots of bad language despite having the TV Guardian.

Actually, I don't believe there is anything wrong with watching television or going to the movies (if you can afford it!) as long as those activities do NOT take the place of serving the Lord.
In our house, old reruns are my pick.....I Love Lucy, Bewitched, Green Acres, etc. We also spend a large amount of tube time on Fox News Channel. Law and Order shows are quite entertaining......most of the time those shows depict how dreadful society has become - can really be a downer.

Probably my regular TV shows during the week are Mythbusters, CSI New York, and all the Friends and Seinfeld reruns on TBS.
On the weekends, the only TV I get all wound up about is either Formula 1 racing, which is on real early on Sunday mornings, so it's part of our get ready for church routine; or World Rally which is usually on Sunday nights after Sunday night church.
My wife loves Family Guy, and we both get a good chuckle out of watching The Daily Show as well.
