As I was driving home last night I passed by the Assembly of God church and saw on their church sign "A Purpose Driven Christmas Carol".

What do you think Dicken's would say to someone perverting his work?

I remember seeing a production by the Jesus People in the 80s called "The Gospel According to Scrooge". Amazing how they adapt garbage from one generation and make it garbage for another.

Probably put on by the Jesus People, though I think they have a new name, but it is the same group of people. It is very decision theology based if I remember correctly. If you can get beyond that you might enjoy it.

There is a lot of good stuff in the Purpose Driven Life (PDL), and someone who is already well-versed and solid in Lutheran Theology could benefit from a lot of what is in the PDL. There are a number of problems, though, that can be very dangerous for a young or non-discerning Christian.

He begins early by making the promse that you will know your lifes purpose and "the big picture-how all the pieces of your life fit together", all within 40 days. A pretty tall order, considering believers, unbelievers, academics, and learning-challanged individuals will read this book. But warren states that this 40 day timetable is the key for everyone... I'm sorry, but I believe that God will change us on His own timetable. It took three years for Paul to prepare for his ministry... Perhaps because Rick Warren had not yet written the PDL yet. ;)

Also, Warren states, "Whenever God wanted to prepare someone for his purposes, he took 40 days." We already see, in Paul's life, that is false. But Rick still presses on. He says, "The Spies were transformed by 40 days in the Promised Land". The truth is, all of the spies except Caleb and Joshua were too scared to lead the people into the promised land. The rest of the spies were "struck down and died of a plague before the LORD." -Num 14:37. 40 YEARS later, God allowed them into the Promised land.

Warren teaches unity at all costs, while the Bible teaches that unity is based on our common faith. In his teaching on unity, Warren makes no distintion between true and false doctrine.

He teaches that Baptism is work of obedience, something WE do, But Baptism is really God's Work in us. Baptism is a daily dying and rising; dying to the old Adam and rising to Christ. In Baptism God adopts us into His family, forgives us our sin, gives us the gift of His presence through the Holy Spirit, and promises us eternal life. A life of faith begins in the water and Word of Holy Baptism.

There is probably at least one unBiblical idea being taught as Scripture every few pages in the PDL.

I can't go on tonight. Like I said, there is a lot of good in the book, but the good is darkened by the many and deep errors.

And it is because of this last aspect you mention that had me selling the book back to Half-price books. It was a gift from my in-laws two years ago at Christmas. Now I have to figure out how to ditch the book by Randy Alcorn titled "Heaven". Chances are if my in-laws liked it then it is filled with some incorrect theological suppositions like PDL.

If the theology won't fly then I won't buy.
