Hey all,

I need to know if any of you have any info or insight on the Council of Orange? I know that the Lutheran divines spoke favorably of it in many places, but can it be said that we accept it, in toto? I've been discussing it with some RCs in this thread: Was Luther a heretic? (http://www.christianforums.com/t2332971-was-luther-a-heretic.html), in which many scurrilous accusations and misunderstandings have been flying aorund. My post on the Council of Orange is here (http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?p=20339137&postcount=381). I have said that I think Lutherans affirm it, but that I'm not 100% sure...

By the way, the Canons of the Council of Orange can be found here (http://www.reformed.org/documents/index.html?mainframe=http://www.reformed.org/documents/canons_of_orange.html).

I know WELS has a statement (http://www.wels.net/cgi-bin/site.pl?1518&cuTopic_topicID=43&cuItem_itemID=10148) agreeing in principle with some of the Canons, but it does not say whether or not we agree with all.

I am particualry curious about cooperation after regeneration.

Any thoughts?

Pax Christi tibi,

Kepler

Kep, I don't think Lutherans formally affirm any council but rather affirm only that which is in agreement with Scriptures.

To steal something from another forum posted today:

In Augsburg and Constantinople, p. 283, you see it clearly in a single
sentence, written by the Lutherans to Jeremias II:

"We accept the dogmas of the Synods with open arms only when we see
them agreeing with the God-inspired Scriptures."

But here is the $64 million dollar question...can you trust those guys to determine whether or not the councils agree with Scripture? Who is the one "seeing"? Who decides there is agreement?

Now...I have heard individual Lutherans say they are in full agreement with the first four councils and some with the first seven eccumenical councils...maybe even heard one or two express agreement with Orange...but I have never been able to find anything that says the Lutheran "church" affirms the councils, the first four, the first seven, Orange...nada.

If you find anything, let me know.

As far as cooperation after regeneration...well, you can imagine where I stand on the issue! ;)

I don't see how assuming that they are in accordance with scripture and not examining their decisions so long as everyone is on the same page is any better than people coming to different conclusions about their being in accordance to the scriptures.
