There is a thread about praise music and the debate got me wondering what everyone listens to in their non-church time.

I gave thwo choices- Christian or Secular. I'm asking what you listen to THE MOST, so please don't get annoyed that those are the only two choices.

After you've answered use your post to get more specific re: genre and/or bands.

I listen to a good mix of both but I'd say that I listen to secular slightly more than Christian.

I put Christian, although I do listen to a lot of secular music. When I have total control of the radio, I try to find DC Talk or Newsboys who I love.

When my husband has control of the radio- It's on Rock & Roll and if I'm lucky I get to hear Gwen Stephani. :)

If my daughter is in control, I listen to Say My Name over and over again until my head explodes....

My son doesn't care. :)

Ummm... both. A combination of Bach, Beethoven, John Rutter, the Beach Boys, Elton John, the Gaither Vocal Band... what can I say, I like an eclectic mixture. :)

I voted Christian, because that is by far the type I listen to the most.

I love DC talk, Delirious, Newsboys, TobyMac, Switchfoot, Third Day, Tim Hughes, Taylor Sorenson, Cathy Burton, Jars of Clay, Iona.
My kids love to listen to it, too. They tell me to put on Jesus music if I have the radio on in the car.

As far as secular bands go, I like Coldplay, U2, R.E.M., and I used to really like the stuff from the 80's, the Cure, UB40, Madness etc.

If you let us know some examples of secular rock that you like, we can recommend some Christian rock that would be likely to appeal to you! :)

:o I can't believe you said that! Young man, more respect for the elderly, please! :D

I especially like Third Days worship album called "Offerings", it is wonderful. Every song on that album is great.

I don't really care for Christian Contemporary. The only Christian cds I have in my collection are a couple of Gregorian Chant cds and a wonderful cd of music for evening prayer/compline by the Anglican monks at the Society of St John the Evangelist. http://www.cowley.org/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=147

Other than those cds I have an extensive cd collection that focuses mostly on classic hard rock - Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Who, etc.

I listen to tons of classical music which although much of which was written in a religious context today is listened to in a secular one so I voted "secular" because on top of that i listen to a lot of rock and roll, blues, pop...etc. Church music and Gregorian chant also feature prominantly in my collection.

I voted "Christian", but only because I consider U2's music to be Christian. They're who I listen to about 90% of the time.

I mostly listen to secular music. I like a wide variety of stuff, but my favorites include: Peter Cetera, Phil Collins, Counting Crows, Rush, Chicago, the Beatles, Amy Grant (Well, she's half secular ;)), the Beach Boys, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Velvet Revolver, Richard Marx, and others. :) Peter Cetera is truly awesome. :)

In terms of contemporary Christian music, I like Dan Schutte (Though logistics and finances have pretended me from actually buying one of his CDs), who is responsible for "Though the Mountains May Fall", "City of God", and "Here I Am, Lord" and Amy Grant. I like a lot of other songs, but I'm not sure who sings them: "Shout to the Lord", "Rise Again", "On Eagle's Wings", "One Bread, One Body", etc. :)

We have our XM satellite radio almost always tuned to channel 32, "The Fish." Which is contemporary Christian.

Higgs, you've gotta get out more! ;) just kidding. You are currently in the small-child-and-baby dimension of life, which is beyond the fourth dimension, and that is just where you should be according to the universal laws of spaghetification.

Ahhhh Stryper... I had an ex-boyfriend who loved them--made me buy all their CD's. Although actually some of their songs are not so bad. My husband and I had our first dance together at our wedding reception to their ballad "Together as one". The lyrics were very pretty and perfect for a married couple.

As for what kind of music I listen to most often, it would be classical/opera. There is a good bit of sacred/Christian music in that genre though--Gregorian chant, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Handel's Messiah, etc.

Seeming Rush in concert is definitely on my list of "Things I'd Like to Do Before I Die". :) It'd be really wonderful to see them perform one of their longer songs like "2112" before a live audience. :)

It's interesting that you should mention that! I am currently listening to classical music as we speak. :) I generally don't like it, but once or twice a year I get in the mood for it and have it in the background all day long. :) I can't say I care for opera, though. I just listen to the instrumental stuff.

I listen probably about 95% to secular music. I never even heard Christian music until I was 17, and by that time, my musical preferences were well-defined and remain so.

Inside Edge

99% secular. 98% for those of you who consider U2 in the decidedly "Christian" category.

Genesis, Rush, Jethro Tull, ELP...I tend to gravitate to pretty much any kind of rock music that makes the masses cringe (with the exception of several women musicians). :)

I have yet to come across any really good Christian secular music that falls into my tastes. Everything I've heard sounds like washed-out hippy adult contemporary music (with exception, like King's X).

U2's music is definitely in the secular category, as far as I'm concerned. They're just secular muscians who happen to also be Christian and are not afraid to admit it! That doesn't make their rock "Christian rock" per say. Most of their songs are about secular or generically philosophic/spiritual topics.

More often secular - with all kinds of rock/metal being my favorite genre.

I do not own any contemporary Christian music - I listen to traditional hymns, gospel/blues and Taize chants.

If you counted hymns as Christian, I would have said Christian, but Im assuming that you mean Christian rock or songs...

I voted Christian, but that's only because I've been listening to a lot of Carrie Newcomer lately (a Quaker folksinger) and she tipped the scales. Otherwise, I'm about 50/50.

In Christian music, I like Carrie Newcomer (as noted), Derek Webb (who I probably couldn't be further from theologically, but I really like his songs) and Caedmon's Call when Derek Webb was in it, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Blind Boys of Alabama, Buddy Miller, and a lot of bluegrass and country gospel. I also listen to a lot of VeggieTales CDs and DVDs with my son ;).

In secular music, I mostly listen to folk and folk rock: Dar Williams, Nerissa Nields, Josh Ritter, Tracy Chapman, Bright Eyes, Billy Bragg, Belle & Sebastian, Joni Mitchell, Wilco, Ani DiFranco, etc. We also listen to a lot of Dan Zanes & Friends and Laurie Berkner in my house (both kids' artists), and I really like both of them and have been known to pop them in and dance and sing along while I am cleaning the house at night after my son is asleep :).

Do you like Phil Ochs? He is one of my favorite folkies - great tunes, great political polemics and a nice dash of traditional folk lyrics.
