View Full Version : Tomorrow on Dateline

Craig Evans, a member of my church and a professor at the local Divinity college will be on Dateline NBC tomorrow night--talking about the birth of Jesus. He has been on Dateline before (but I didn't see it, back when Passion of the Christ came out) but I have heard him speak in person several times.

I also posted this in Women's Discussion but thought I would add it over here.

Man...the problem about being a college student is that I'm too poor to afford cable.

Is he liberal? Most "Christians" who go on TV shows like this are usually liberals who deny many facets of Christianity.

Either that, or TV will interview the extremists on the other side of the spectrum, such as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and others. Unfortunately, orthodox Christianity never gets much representation. The general public assumes that we're all either fundamentalists nutcases or liberals who don't believe what our Bibles say.

Better a crazy fundy than a spineless liberal, IMO.

Yes, we're putting the "mental" back in fundamental one verse at a time ^_^

Well, I don't think fundamentalism is much better than liberalism. Fundamentalism is inherently antithetical to the Gospel. It is based on the premise of salvation by works (drinking, dancing, voting Democrat, etc., all condemn a person to hell). Therefore, it is impossible to be a fundamentalist and a Christian at the same time.

That said, you guys and I may have different definitions of fundamentalism. I personally believe in the Trinity, salvation by Christ alone, sola fide, Biblical inerrency, as well as all other orthodox doctrines, and I am against both abortion and homosexual practices. But I wouldn't say that I'm a fundamentalist. There are a few people here who classify themselves as fundamentalists, but I wouldn't call these people fundamentalists either.

People who I think are fundamentalists are men like Fred Phelps (the guy who hates gays), Bob Jones (the guy who thinks that interracial marriage is ungodly), and other such characters. These men are no better than the liberals who deny our Lord Jesus Christ. Rather than deny his Name outright, they blaspheme by adding to and contradicting the doctrines of Scripture. They are like the Judaizers who sought to destroy the fellowship of our ancestors, and they should not be tolerated.

Well I know you said your definition may differ with ours but I think it would be best to change your own definition because it taints the word to label fundamentalists as those that say dancing is bad and you have to do works to be saved. I think legalists would maybe be a better word. That word of course is also abused a lot but in ascribing it to those that think you have to do works to earn salvation or think like dancing is bad when clearly in the Bible it is not then the legalist definition fits as it should when the word is used.

Thanks for the reminder.
As I will be watching.
I wish all evangelists were like Billy Graham.
Without no politics nor controversy.
