View Full Version : Liturgical calendar - what's that??

Just thought you might be interested to know that the reading at our church this Sunday - three weeks before advent - is going to be John 21:4-17; Jesus + his disciples have breakfast on the beach after the resurrection!

Incase you think I've gone completely mad, it's Methodist Homes Sunday here in the UK; theme - sense and sensitivity. This was a passage that was recommended for use, and I shall be encouraging the congregation to try to picture the scene - the sight and sound of the sea, feel of the heavy nets, and smell of fish cooking, and will then be going onto say how we can use our senses to worship and experience God.

Well that's the plan anyway.

Thanks for the reminder of when advent starts. Attending a church which does not follow the calendar makes it easy to forget things like that. Need to dust off the wreath and put in the candles.

I like the sermon plan by the way.

Sounds like a wonderful sermon -- I led a Bible study once where we discussed "out-of-the-box" ways of worshipping God. Didn't think about senses...

Would you mind sharing your outline ?

Well I would but I haven't really got one yet. What I'm actually planning is to split the reading in two and have two short talks instead of a sermon. The first talk is going to be the first bit of the reading, and I thought I might try something different for that; looking at the events from Peter's point of view. Ie his decision to go fishing again, what his thoughts might have been about seeing Jesus again in the upper room, wondering how he was going to apologise for having denied him. Then his excitment when he realised that it was Jesus who had performed the miracle and how he rushed to meet him. I wondered if the sight of a fire on the shore would have brought back memories of that other fire in the courtyard, where he denied the Lord, so I'll include that. And a few thoughts about seeing Jesus breaking bread and remembering the last time they saw him doing so. I thought I'd do this as though Peter was writing a diary entry. I don't know how it will go down - I've not heard it done before.

The next short talk might not be about the senses as such. I haven't fully worked this out yet, but I thought I might talk about how the whole experience might have been healing for Peter, and go on to talk about how the Lord ministers to the whole person. Also, leading on from that, how we can worship, and experience, him with all of our senses. I'm going to start the service by introducing the theme and saying a bit about work being done in Methodist homes with elderly people who may be losing some of their senses, eg after a stroke.

I think the whole service will be a little different from the norm, but I hope it still speaks to people.

The service sounds wonderful. My wife and I are both pastors (herev and sherev;)). she is much better at creating a "picture" for folks. I will print this out for her.

good job!

Sounds like a wonderful service... I, too, have printed out your ideas -- plan to use them in a personal study.

Thanks a lot, dear !!! I'll be praying for you and your congregation.

Sorry, I've been away for a few days. (I needed it!)

I think it went ok, I always find it hard to tell. A few people said afterwards that they liked it, and I'm sure they weren't just saying that. I missed a few things out of the children's talk - because I forgot about them, not for any other reason.

The thing I have to keep reminding myself about services is that when they're over they're over, so there's no point worrying about what I did or didn't do. I'll learn one day.
