I was given a book written by Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz (published by Harvest House Publishers) called World Religions and Cults 101. They seem to have written a bunch of books like Bible 101 and Knowing God 101.

I thought it looked pretty good at first, but something just doesn't seem right.

Does anyone know anything about these guys as far as their theology?

Thanks in advance,

I "think" I've read this book before. If I'm thinking correctly it talks about Zoroastrianism as being the "first" real religion, where Christianity took alot of its roots. If it's the same book, I put it down after I read that. It seemed they wanted to imply that all religions are somewhat correct and ok to practice.

But like I said, I'm for certain I am talking about the same book. If it has a section on Zoroastrianism, see if that's what they imply.

Harvest House Publishing is usually a reliable publisher. It is a mennonite company. I have read and given many of their books to many people and I'm not aware of any problems or errors in their teaching. What doesn't seem right about the book?

we might get a little flak from the Christian community for suggesting that you consider other religions along with Christianity. But there are already too many books that try to force a certain religion on you. This isn't going to be another one of them.

If your purpose in reading this book is to find a faith of your own, that's great. We're glad that we could help you get started. But don't stop here. Use this book as a springboard to further investigation and analysis. Our goal is to get you thinking about spiritual matters. We hope we accomplish that.

I'll probably still read it, because I enjoy learning about other religions (I don't accept them, but it's interesting to learn their history).

Yeah same with me. Though I don't accept other religions, I like to read about them and wonder why they were brought to contridict and compromise all that God is.

It's obviously a book for seekers, not Christians. There is nothing wrong with seekers learning about other religions. If a book came on too strong with, "There's only Christianity and it's the only one you should learn about," then it wouldn't be a very good book for seekers, it would turn them off. But these authors know that if a seeker really examines the religions, Christianity will come off as being the real truth. So they aren't threatened by seekers seeking other faiths.

Sounds as if they are trying to address the free-floating spirituality of the times.

You shouldn't be afraid to read anything. Sometimes points of view that differ slightly but significantly from traditional Christianity can help us to better understand our own beliefs.

Anytime you read a book or listen to pastors/leaders, you should always make sure the text lines up with the Bible....no matter who said it or wrote it. If there is ever a question.....look it up.

Many pastors read material and teach about other religions in order to be able to more effectively witness. You have to understand their beliefs in order to be effective.

We should underline the texts so that it does match with the bible.
And that it will make us effective witnesses for the Lord.
