Baptist Pastor and Author Electrocuted While Performing Baptismal Service
ASSIST News Service
WACO, TEXAS (ANS) -- A Baptist pastor has died after being electrocuted while performing a baptism at his church in Waco, Texas.
The accident happened on Sunday, October 3, when Kyle Lake, pastor of University Baptist Church and the author of two recent books, was electrocuted during a Sunday morning baptismal service.
Lake, 33, was partially submerged while performing the Sunday morning baptism to a crowd of over 800. He was electrocuted after grabbing a microphone so the crowd could hear him speak. The woman he was baptizing was not injured.
Lake was the pastor for the last seven years at UBC and is the author of two books, Understanding God's Will and the new release Understanding Prayer.
"We're grateful to have had the opportunity to partner with Kyle on two phenomenal books, "Cameron Strang, president of Relevant Media Group said. "It's reassuring to know that the printed word is permanent, and many, many lives will still be impacted by his life and message through these works. Our prayers go out to his family and church."
Lake is survived by his wife and three young children. The family would like donations in lieu of flowers to be sent to University Baptist Church, the church where Kyle was pastor and deeply loved.

It is very very sad we remain in prayer for the Pastors family
And for the whole of the congregation.
There is peace knowing he passed from here to heaven in one breath and I am sure that as he perished doing G-ds work a reward was waiting for him there

I hate to be a killjoy, but I don't think it is funny. It really happened. I hope He is happily resting with Christ now.

I thought everyone knew you're not supposed to touch electrical appliances while standing in water. What a senseless way to die.

Yo Dave,
I bet he sitting up there saying "I can't believe I did that"
And he's probably got a relative next to him saying "I can believe it"
Sure it's tragedy--but think a second about the conversation on the other side of the veil.

After that tragedy, there are going to be some changes into baptizing and not touching electrical stuff because of that. From what I heard and read.

This is technically not a Mod hat warning but more a request from an elder of the church.
Please be sensitive in this thread. There is a real widow out there right now who is your sister and she is crying. There are a couple little children out there right now who's daddy is not comming home tonight and they are crying. There is a congregation that is looking to make sense of something that is very painful and consoling by knowing that their beloved pastor is in heaven.
Please I beg of you be sensitive

Yes, I never expected this to be so, well, disresepcted. I know I'm Lutheran, but I thought all of you would like to know so you could pray for your brothers and sisters.

I agree.
Very Sad and probably very frightening for the new believer being baptized.
I can't imagine such a thing. The Lord is in control and he brings home when he chooses.

Yes we rejoice that he is in heaven, but it is still sad and heartwrenching. He was 33 years old and married and I cant imagine how his wife feels. It is good to rejoice and to mourn.

If the sound equipment was properly grounded, would touching the casing of a microphone cause this electrocution? This is not the only Pastor who ever touched a microphone while standing in a Baptistry. My sincere condolences to the family and the church family.

So what's this guy saying to folks in heaven, "It seemed like a good idea at the time"?
Your comments are extremely insensitive-this is not a joking matter. We in the Baylor Family have just lost a family member (one of many over the past several years), and we Baylor Bears the world over suffer because of it. Why do you laugh at our suffering? Did Jesus poke fun at the suffering of others? What if Jennifer was browsing through this thread? :sigh: When one of your family members dies should I post jokes and laugh about it?
Daveleau and Nehemiah Center, thank you for your sensitive posts. I very much appreciate them :)
Pastor Kyle was not only a Baylor graduate, but he was also a graduate of George W. Truett Theological Seminary (http://www.truettseminary.net/).

This death really opens my eyes to the fact that no matter where we are serving, or how important we think our mission is, God can take us no matter what.I only feel sorry for his family and the congregation. I truly hope the woman he was baptizing doesn't think this is a sign that she shouldn't follow in that obedience or worse turn from God altogether. As for Pastor Kyle, I'm truly envious of where he is now.

Church sound systems should be in the hands of real engineers. Or at least have them checked by one. Stray voltages and lifted grounds can kill you.
As a person that has installed several systems in churches I can only pray that this tragic situation causes folks to check their systems out.
I also pray for the family, my prayers go out to those members also.

Members are reminded this is a great lost for the pastor's family/church/friends. Many people are grieving. Please be sensitive when you post. Debates shouldn't happen but condolences.

What a horrible tragedy. :prayer: for the pastor's family and congregation.
My husband works in the sound room and he says that wherever he has worked they always used the wireless mikes for baptisms.

In my secular Job I come pretty close to what you asked for as an electrical engineer.
We tend to think that all churches have the latest and the greatest of everything but it is very possible that this church like so many has a fairly old vacum tube sound system. You would be amazed at how many still do! Even with solid state you can have stray voltages on the cabinet and with a tube system they can be quite lethal.
You know what might be a nice rememberance? Donate a wireless microphone to your own church in this mans name. Tell your pasor Look this is what happened to another Pastor and we love you and dont want to take a chance with you!
Please pray for this fellows family and his church

Some of the best mic preamps made today are tube designs. I like your idea for donating a wireless mic.
