Where have you been?
I've had to chill out a little bit with the theological examination. It's been giving me some angst. What theological pontificating I do on the Internet nowadays is on my blog, The Thoughtful Crab, which also serves to take up a lot of my Internet time formerly devoted to CF. The blog isn't primarily theological, though, and is in many cases much more informal than my normal style of writing, so fair warning is given there. :) A lot of the content on the blog is sports, politics, culture, philosophy, non-Christian religion, humor, and so forth. I kind of like being able to pick my own topics. Feel free to drop by and leave comments. :) I love the blog style of articles on top of articles with a comment forum for each article.
The other contributing factor to my reduced level of participation here is that I have just returned to my ancestoral homeland for the holidays, where my access to the Internet is more limited for various reasons.
I think what I am going to do is focus most of my CF time on the Alehouse. It's nice and laid back, non-stressful, etc. :) It's good to be missed, of course. I was kind of surprised anyone noticed. :)
And where's Lel?
She's talking about converting to Roman Catholicism, so I think most of her contributions are to OBOB now. She's also been very busy with work and so forth. Maybe we can lure her back, though. Do you think we can get Archbishop Willliams to start wearing a papal tiara? ;)

I actually am serious. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen. She is significantly more liberal than mainstream Roman Catholicism and she's even significantly more liberal than me on some stuff, so I don't think it makes much sense for her to convert to Roman Catholicism. But she wanders around quoting Scott Hahn and Patrick Madrid now while reading her Cathecism of the Catholic Church and saying the rosary along with the nuns on EWTN. It can be kind of cute, but it's very shocking. I wouldn't mention it, but she's being fairly open about it on OBOB, so it's sort of public domain now. I'm kind of hoping it's just a phase.

I am more liberal than your version of Roman Catholicism, sure. But you act like what you have seen of the Catholic Church is all there is to see. I reject your vision of such until I see it with my own two eyes -- and I haven't yet.
and she's even significantly more liberal than me on some stuff, so I don't think it makes much sense for her to convert to Roman Catholicism.
It wouldn't, unless the Catholic Church were the fullness of the Truth. That one idea changes things.

39 Articles, 39 Articles! Finally a use for em'!
I actually do quote a few of the Articles to her every once in a while. She'll talk about something like praying to get time off purgatory and I'll say something like "Haven't you read the 39 Articles recently? That's a profrane Romish doctrine!" and then I'll get out my BCP and read the appropriate article to her. ;) Actually, I've only done that once or twice, and mostly as a joke. I thought it'd be amusing to do a couple times, but she'd probably start throwing things at me after a certain point if I didn't let it die while it was still funny, so I figured that discretion is the better part of valor on this one. Feel free to private message her the articles one at a time, though. ;)
Actually, Lel is a wonderful young lady and even if she became Roman Catholic, I'd still be madly in love with her and all that. I respect everyone's freedom of conscience on religious matters. As long as she doesn't try to covert me, everything will be fine. ;)
John for the UUA (At least that is how it appears from your avatar!)
Funny you should say that, I was actually thinking about attending a UUA service sometime soon. I haven't been to one in about two years or so and I try to hit everything in a certain group of denominations I'm fond of every once in a while, just to see the things that are unique to those denominations that I particularly like every so often. I'll probably hit a UCC and UMC services shortly as well. I went to an ELCA service as recently as September, so I don't need to visit ELCA again for a while. Of course, I try to attend an ECUSA service every week. :)
The UUA actually has a lot to recommend to it, but I'm not sure I'd fit in as a regular member. Truth be told, liturgy and ritual are a bigger part of why I come to church than I'd normally care to admit. I love the repetition and the other-worldly beauty of it all (That's probably why I'm such a high-churchman). Most UUA congregations aren't exactly known for being terribly liturgical.
Plus, the congregationalist structure of the UUA means when you visit ones in different areas, it can be an entirely different deal. I'm the type of person who usually prefers chain restuarants and stuff where I know what I'm getting even when I'm out of town. ;) Theretically, having an episcopal structure with bishops or the equivalent and a national or international church government provides some level of quality control, whereas each UUA congregation is independent of all the rest.
There's a lot to like about the UUA, though. For example, they're generally very accepting of anyone who walks in the door and don't demand that people change themselves to suit the group. They also incorporate a lot of different faith traditions, which can be really interesting. The one near my ancestoral homeland often celebrates Christian, Jewish, and Pagan holidays and traditions, and even holds a Quaker-style service once a year. The Quaker service is being held while I'm visiting, and I've never seen a Quaker meeting, so I'm thinking about maybe going to that one. The only catch is that I'd probably have to miss a week at my old Episcopalian parish to do it, and I really like the parish, so I'd hate to miss one of only a handful of services I'll be able to attend there before heading back. It might be better to do my UUA visiting at the congregation where I'm living when I get back there.
Anyhow, the only way I could see joining the UUA would be if I found a congregation I really, really liked and it was a secondary affiliation -- i.e. go to an Episcopalian service on Saturdays and then hit the UUA on Sundays when I feel like it.

You may want to pass on the sugarless candies, though. All the ones I've tried are really, really bad. And that's coming from someone who loves diet soda! So I'm not anti-artificial sweetners, it's just that they don't work with candy. :)

Immanuel Kant was a real ****ant
Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar

David Hume could out-consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates, himself, was permanently ****ed.
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away--
Half a crate of whisky every day.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle.
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And René Descartes was a drunken fart.
'I drink, therefore I am.'
Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker,
But a bugger when he's ****ed.

Hi everyone. I'm back. The chicken wings were actually 35 cents and not the anticipated 25, but still quite tasty. I sampled a few different types. The best was Carribean Jerk wings. If you've never had them before, *try them*. The taste is completely unique. It actually took me a couple wings to decide if I liked them or not, because it was hard to process -- it was like nothing I had ever had before -- and then I decided I loved them. :) I think they're from Jamaca or something.
I also had some honey BBQ and hot wings. And, of course, some beer and some water. All of it good stuff. :) I'll be back next Tuesday. I wish I could find a place where I normally live with a cheap wing night!

Hopefully Erwin will have got it sorted out by time we have the party on Thursday.
If not, we will run the party simultaniously in here as well.
I had no idea Reilly's used to be an open thread. Maybe I should hang out there more if Erwin ever changes it back...

Ahhh... most people are under the impression that CA is all warm, all year.
Northern California (superior by far to Southern California ;) ) has cold winters, and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, with loads of ski resorts, is about 1 hour drive from where I'm staying. I haven't been skiing in years; we just took up the sleds and saucers today and flew down the mountains on those. Great fun!

Fun fun fun! (And I'll forgive you for that remark about Southern California since you obviously don't know what it's like to live here :P ) Being a resident of California, I know perfectly well there are places you can find snow. Heck, I've even been to several of them. Just thought I'd try to have a little fun with the misconceptions you noted about California.

Coo! Will you look at the dust on the jukebox! Hauls out a purple ostritch-feather duster, disinters the jukebox, and queues up Iron Butterfly, followed by a little Arlow Guthrie, Warren Zeevon, and some Boston. There, that should help.
Uses the tumbleweed to restart the fire in the fireplace, and sets the mulling-pokers in the fire.
There's a huge chunk of great-grandmother's leftover Christmas cake here; I'll leave it on the bar. Help yourselves.

(Can you hear the guitars?)___________________________________________
I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It’s more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
’till I see marianne walk away
I see my marianne walkin’ away
So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky
It’s more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
’till I see marianne walk away
I see my marianne walkin’ away
When I’m tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
She slipped away. she slipped away.
It’s more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
’till I see marianne walk away
I see my marianne walkin’ away

Tea - the making of
For the benefit of all my friends stateside, here is how to make proper tea. I do not include pmcleanj in this on the grounds that
a) She is Canadian
b) Must have English blood as well as she already makes an excellent cup of tea. (please feel free to take that as a hint:D )
1) Boil kettle:)
2)Run out and buy another kettle (because you forgot to put water in the first one before boiling it) and try again.
3)Put tea bag in mug.
NB. there is a school of thought that states that you should use a pre warmed tea pot, and one spoonful of loose tea per person plus one for the pot (even though the pot will not be drinking any tea). Once the water is added to the pot, it is then covered with a tea cosy, which looks remarkably like the wooly hat your Granny goes shopping in. After leaving for approx 4 minutes and 51 seconds, the tea is then poured (into a pre heated cup)using a strainer to collect the tea leaves (unless your Great Aunt is visiting and wants to see your fortune in the tea leaves, when the strainer should be discarded. NEVER let Great Aunt read tea leaves if the Vicar is visiting as well.):holy:
There is a second school of thought which states that if you are gonna pratt around like that, you are going to end up missing half of the game/concert/movie etc, besides you get more tea in a mug than you do in a cup.
4)Add boiling water to the mug/tea bag and stir well.
5)Use spoon to squeeze tea bag against inside of mug then remove. You should aim to dribble no more than the equivilent of two spoonfuls of tea onto whichever surface you are working on.
6)Grasping the handle of the spoon between thumb and index finger of your right hand, slowly bring the head of the spoon back with your left index finger, and fire the used tea bag in the general direction of the bin. You will undoubtably fail in this many times, making yourself extremely unpopular in the process, but the sense of satisfaction felt when you finally master this art makes it worthwhile.
7)Add milk/Sugar to your own personal taste, ensuring that equal amounts of each are added to the tea previously spilt on your chosen work surface/table etc. This mixture should then be given a token wipe using the nearest clean tea towel, thus rendering it useless to dry dishes with. If you can achieve this using the last clean tea towel in the drawer, the effect is further hightened.
8)As a final touch, forget to put the milk back in the fridge and leave the lid off the cookie jar (we will discuss at a later date the merits of which cookies are best for dunking).
9)Enjoy your tea. If you work hard at perfecting these techniques, you will soon be in the happy position of never having to make the tea again, because you will be PERMENANTLY BANNED FROM THE KITCHEN!!
More tea vicar?.......;)

The instructions for women are much simpler:
1. Lie on the sofa complaining about your hard day and all the 'errands' you've had to do (ie. having lunch with all her girlfriends and wiping a few surfaces on the kitchen  )
2. Tell the bloke that if he doesn't make you a cup of tea within the next five minutes then he'll be sleeping on the sofa tonight.

Facts of Women
1) Women love to shop. It is the one area of the world where they feel like they're actually in control.
2) Women especially love a bargain. The question of "need" is irrelevant, so don't bother pointing it out. Anything on sale is fair game.
3) Women never have anything to wear. Don't question the racks of clothes in the closet; you "just don't understand".
4) Women need to cry. And they won't do it alone unless they know you can hear them.
5) Women will always ask questions that have no right answer, in an effort to trap you into feeling guilty.
6) Women love to talk. Silence intimidates them and they feel a need to fill it, even if they have nothing to say.
7) Women hate bugs. Even the strong-willed ones need a man around when there's a spider or a wasp involved.
8) Women can't keep secrets. They eat away at them from the inside. And they don't view it as being untrustworthy, providing they only tell two or three people.
9) Women always go to public restrooms in groups. It gives them a chance to gossip.
10) If a man goes on a seven-day trip, he'll pack five days worth of clothes and will wear some things twice; if a woman goes on a seven-day trip she'll pack 21 outfits because she doesn't know what she'll feel like wearing each day.
11) Women brush their hair before bed.
12) Women are paid less than men, except for one field: Modeling.
13) Women are never wrong. Apologizing is the man's responsibility, "It's there in the Bible".
14) The average number of items in a typical woman's bathroom is 437. A man would not be able to identify most of these items.
15) Women love cats. Men say they love cats, but when women aren't looking, men kick cats.
16) Women love to talk on the phone. A woman can visit her girlfriend for two weeks, and upon returning home, she will call the same friend and they will talk for three hours.
17) A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the garbage, answer the phone, read a book, or get the mail.
18) Women do NOT want an honest answer to the question, 'How do I look?'
19) Women will make three right-hand turns to avoid making one left-hand turn.
20) "Oh, nothing," has an entirely different meaning in woman- language than it does in man- language.
21) Women cannot use a map without turning the map to correspond to the direction that they are heading.
22) If it is not Valentines day and you see a man in a flower shop, you can probably start up a conversation by asking, "What did you do?"
23) Women don't really care about a sense of humor in a guy despite claims to the contrary. You don't see women trampling over Tom Cruise to get to Gilbert Gottfried, do you?
24) Women will spend hours dressing up to go out, and then they'll go out and spend more time checking out other women. Men can never catch women checking out other men; women will always catch men checking out other women.
25) The most embarrassing thing for women is to find another woman wearing the same dress at a formal party.

If we're going to get the Pub to split, and sink into the swamp, curtains and all, and all that, we're going to need to post a bit more tonight.
Come on, my children! Some day all of this will be yours!
Let's talk about food. That's always good for several threads. Seems to be an Anglican thing. Lutherans bring the most delicious covered dishes to church dinners, but they really don't talk about food as much as Anglicans do.
Or we could talk about television. Like why are laugh-tracks so obnoxious; and why do all the channels have boring pap on at the same time, and does anybody really watch sitcoms?
Or we could talk about California. Like where else would you find a four-star hotel integrated into an outlet mall? And where else would you walk into the cultured, refined lobby to be greeted by a large black-and-white warning declaring that "Drinking alcohol may harm your unborn baby." I wasn't planning to drink anyway, and I'm not pregnant. Is there some reason I need to know this prior to checking in?

Or, we could discuss Harry Potter. That's always good for a few hundred posts.
What I want to know about Harry Potter is, why has HP made J.K.Rowling a millionaire, while E. Nesbitt, Alan Garner, Edward Eager and Mary Norton are forgotten and neglected. I have no problem with Rowling getting all the royalties she deserves, but .... why? Honestly, I think Nesbitt is by far the better writer, and her Psammyad and his adventures far the more fascinating and creative invention.
Or I could just go read my new Noel Streatfield in the bath...

It shows who has posted and how many times.
It can't exclude anyone, because anyone who posts in the Alehouse, even if only once, goes on the list.
It's rather fun in one respect because you get people battling it out to get more posts in, which in turn increases the amount of posting in the Alehouse.
