I loved the Candian game. Three downs, 110 yard field, 12 men to a side, a field goal post at the front of the endzone, and, of course, the all important rouge (i.e. a single point awarded to the kicking team when a kick into the endzone is not brought out by the returning team).

Sounds like Rugby League. Andy?

It plays a lot more like a modified version of American football than it does rugby (A casual fan might not notice the difference between the US and the Canadian game at first glance), although, strictly speaking, American football is actually a modified version of Canadian football, which in turn is a *very* modified version of rugby, if I recall correctly (Which I probably do not. :)).

Cool. What kind of spiritual beliefs do you have, if any (If it's okay to ask :))? Are you looking into any churches or spiritual gatherings, thinking about doing so, avoiding institutionalized religion at all cost, take a break, or what? :)

On the face of it, 15 (RFU) players to 12.

Then it seems that the objective in RFL is to reach the try line in a series of downs, whereas in RFU you go whereever.

The two games look very different and I have absolutely no idea what the specifics of RFL are. I'm a Union girl myself.

Thanks for the explanation! :) The RFL sounds a little bit more like American/Canadian football than the the Union game. The Union game sounds like the sort of thing labeled rugby over here, though. I really like what rugby I've seen, but it isn't consider a major sport in the US, so I have never really gotten a chance to follow it regularly.

Goodnight everyone! :)

John

Rugby Union is for people who don't mind running for ninety minutes without a break whilst getting mugged every ten metres for an inflated pigskin.

I played Rugby League at school until all the other kids turned into knuckle dragging neanderthals hell bent on my destruction. I played winger - which meant I got the ball when nobody else wanted it. Generally I would get the ball about twice a game and managed to hold on to it for about three seconds before two hundred pounds flesh would pound into my face and sear all thought from my brain.

Cricket is much more fun. You get to stand in the Queensland sun for a full day hoping the ball might come your way.

And nobody hits you.

Hey Andy, explain Rugby League to us. Do you know if it is similar to Canadian football?

Not sure what canadian football is to be honest Naomi, but rugby league is similer to rugby union in many ways, but has 13 players per side instead of 15 nad is physically rougher than union. It's played prediminantly in the north of England, mainly in Yorkshire and Lancashire. There was a split in the 1870's and the Rugby Football League came into being. Prior to that there was only one type of rugby, all amatuer. In 1876 (I think) several northern clubs wanted to start paying their players, who were mainly working class men, as they could not afford time off work for training etc.

The southern clubs, mainly made up of better off middle class players, refused to go along with it, and the split occurred.

Both codes are now professional at the top level, but the two codes remain seperate and probably always will.

*HACK* *COUGH* *SPLUTTER*

You only have to watch two games back-to-back to see how untrue that is. I used to play League and then played one Union game - it nearly killed me! There's an order of magnitude in difficulty between the two games. For example:

Union is non-stop. League pauses every tackle and there is a posession change every sixth.
Union has 14 men in a scrum, League has 10.
Union scrums are REAL scrums, League scrums now consist of second-row feeds and now serve mainly to give the backs a chance to play the ball.
Union has line-outs, rucks and field goals that are actually worth something. These force the players to be something more than a charging mass of body weight.
League favours those with more body mass and muscular strength over skill.
As a winger I was fast and nimble, but still managed to get coat-hangered nearly every time I touched the ball. I actually *did* do better at Union than League, however I realised I didn't have anything near the skill of the other players. I was useless in a ruck and was a hindrance in a line-out and although I was fast, I couldn't run for forty minutes without stopping for a break. In contrast, when playing league I mainly walked around or jogged to get in position. The only time I had to run was if I or the prop nearest to me had the ball - then I ran hell-for-leather. Unless the ball was passed to me my instructions were always to kick the ball into touch, particularly if I didn't have the support of the rest of the field.

But the fact remains that many League players have madr the transition to union, but few union players have been able to handle the greater demands that League places on them.

And any claim that League is dominated by the forwards can easily be countered by referring to the way the Kiwi backs put Australia to the sword in the Tri Nations final on saturday.

And with respect, the ball spends far more time out of play in a game of union than in a game of league, thuis allowing the backs in the union code to have more rest time than their league counterparts.

I do agree that something has to be done about the scrums in league though.

Those demands are usually strength and size related - not skill. If you're big enough and tough enough, you can play League. Union requires a higher level of skill and aerobic fitness. It's "the running game". I also find it more enjoyable to watch than league.

Wendell Sailor can play well in both codes because he has the skill AND the size/strength. The man is a machine! However, I'd hate to see John Hopoate try and play Union.

By the way, John Hopoate is a Mormon and was in my ward before we moved to Queensland. After each suspension we'd say "Well, I guess we'll see Hoppas at Church this Sunday!"

And any claim that League is dominated by the forwards can easily be countered by referring to the way the Kiwi backs put Australia to the sword in the Tri Nations final on saturday.

We're not having a good year for international sport.

I'm not sure how you figure this. League has lots on mini stops every tackle. It can be argued that League has quicker play from the touch line. It can also be argued that Union players deliberately put the ball into touch more often. Since Arthur Beetson coached quick playing tactics as a means to put the other team off guard (flick passing, taking the tap, short punts on the fifth tackle) League has definitely increased in speed. It still is a generally slower, stop/start game than Union.

I do agree that something has to be done about the scrums in league though.

What can be done? Have a single row only? The change was made to avoid injury. For some reason, the spinal injuries endemic to League don't seem to be as much of a problem in the more densely packed Union scrums.

Basically the ball either has to go in stright as it does in Union, or get rid of the scrum entirely, and just have a tap start.

In present form it serves no purpose.

BTW I can't speak about the Aussie game but over here most of the league players that have done well in Union have been backs.

Pepperberry sauce for me! My wife discovered it in Tasmania, now we have it couriered to us by the box load!

A Pakinstani friend introduced a wonderful spice from the land of his ancestors to me in high school, but unfortunately I didn't write down the name of it. I rue neglecting to do that to this day. It was a truly great condiment. :)

Being a typical teenager of the Kevin variety at the moment, the only thing I've established from him was that it was "alright"

It was a good film.

Really good dragon chase scene (Harry Potter version of a car chase)

Hull 2-0 Cardiff

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41085000/jpg/_41085768_darren_purse3107_203.jpg Cardiff defender Darren Purse was sent off for two yellow cards

Hull ended a six-match streak without a win by seeing off visitors Cardiff.

The game turned on the 68th-minute dismissal of Darren Purse, the Cardiff skipper picking up his second yellow card for fouling Craig Fagan.

Within two minutes Hull turned the numerical advantage into a goal, as Fagan crossed from the right and Billy Paynter converted it from close range.

Cardiff looked for an equaliser but Hull caught them with a swift counter, Fagan racing clear to drill home.

<LI>Hull manager Peter Taylor:
"We needed the win and I was really pleased because we have worked very hard and did not drop our heads.

"In the first half we could have done better, but we improved a bit in the second half and that first goal obviously gave us confidence.

"It was an important victory and it would be lovely if we could go on a little run now and build on that win."

<LI>Cardiff manager Dave Jones:
"The lad (Fagan) jumped up and ran at him (Purse) and in today's game there's no need for it.

"You only have to touch someone now and they go down like who knows what.

"Although Darren has tackled him from behind I'm not sure it was a yellow card and maybe the referee wasn't going to give it."

Hull: Duke, Lynch, Cort, Collins, Delaney, Dawson, France, Welsh, Barmby (Elliott 66), Fagan, Paynter (Andrews 90).
Subs Not Used: Leite, Green, Price.

Goals: Paynter 70, Fagan 88.

Cardiff: Alexander, Weston, Purse, Loovens, Barker (Lee 86), Parry (Cox 69), Whitley, Koumas, Ledley, Jerome, Ricketts.
Subs Not Used: Ardley, Boland, Margetson.

Sent Off: Purse (68).

Booked: Purse, Weston, Ricketts. Att: 18,364 Ref: P Taylor (Hertfordshire).

I know what you mean. Christmas wasn't my favorite holiday growing up, in part because I wasn't religious and there was a lot of pressure to go to church, but for a lot of other reasons as well. Nowadays, I really look forward to the late-night Christmas Eve service, but I find Christmas *still* isn't my favorite holiday because a lot of the other reasons I had as a child still apply.

Gift buying is a lot of pressure for people on low incomes. I have a huge family and, even when names are picked out of hats, I still have four presents to buy, since it isn't done on a one to one basis (Long story). Growing up, I only worked part-time while going to school and then some health problems hit and I only worked part-time for that reason. Nowadays, I kind of do the homemaker thing (Again due to the health) while sharing one income with a roommate who works. I simply can't afford to get gifts that are up to the standards that are expected of me and it has only been very rarely that I've *ever* been able to do so. The family knows my situation and still makes snide comments about my gifts. They don't seem to get that if I only spend $4 or $5 on a present, it's because I usually only have $4 or $5 I can spend. And, yes, I've explained the situation to them at length repeatedly.

Part of my frustration with the holiday comes from my family's attitude towards things (They're rich and they just don't understand that I'm poor, and they're healthy and they just don't understand that I'm not), but I think the secular aspects of this holiday can be stressful on all sorts of people in all sorts of circumstances. It almost completely obscures for many the celebration of the Incarnation of God that is so central to Christmas, or the more general sense of hope and joy that is so central to the holiday for non-Christians.

Personally, I've always preferred Thanksgiving. It's practically stress free, the food is a lot better, and there's football. :)

I have a similar problem with a family that has no worries when it comes to their finances when we are struggling on a month-to-month basis. I don't have the health issue that you have, thankfully. I always preferred Thanksgiving for the same reason.

My church back in the UK runs a pantomime every few years. Clean pantomimes are brilliant... not an enormous fan of the ones with a double-entendre every 2 lines...

TimothyNo, I'm not either! :)

momYes, we only serve alcohol here to those over the legal age, but that varies according to state and country!

One funny thing around here is that we are all on different time zones.

I know that the diff time zones seem weird since we all appear here at the "same" time--just as on the tele.

I have to go as I have to eat breakfast with Pa, whom I've just been running back and forth to make breakfast for now.

The kids at our church decorated gingerbread houses last weekend, and we auctioned them off after church at coffee hour. We gave the money to charity. It was fun!

I'm here, but I'm really tired!

Just got back from a Carol Concert, with a large youth orchestra and choirs. It was good. But now it's 11:30 pm, and I need to go to bed. Someone pull me away from this computer!

Higgs, how strange! Your post yesterday was at the same exact time as it is today, but it was PM instead of AM! I do hope you can get to sleep. I sometimes go through phases of not sleeping well. It's not nice.

That is a bit strange.

I went out with the girls last night, ate some rich food (drank a little wine). That always wakes me up. And I am a chronic insomniac too.

But, there are naps, and my 1 year old is a great excuse for a nap :)

OK lets read the Complete Bible through in 2006. Lets do it in an order that will help us stay with it. Please comment on how to best do this here: http://www.christianforums.com/t2408361-lets-read-the-whole-bible-together-in-2006.html#post20666205

KAraoke?...isn't that Japanese for "tone deaf"?...

English for "tone deaf" is "Fish and Bread". Actually, I'm not really tone deaf, I just can't carry a tune. :) People run away screaming when they suspect that I'll be singing a few verses of something in the near future. ;) The nice thing is that at when I'm in a pew at church, I'm usually singing with a pretty large group, so they drown me out for the most part.

Christmas cookies come in all sorts of festive shapes, like ---well, snowmen! :D and holly leaves, and little candy canes, and reindeer. And they have red and green colored sugar crystals on them, and sometimes colored frosting too.

And if you think that's something, you should see the Christmas biscuits.;)

Concert was fabulous, by the way. I am always refreshed when I am in a room with hundreds of young adult Christians worshiping together. The warm-up act was a wonderful singer from America called Kendell Payne, and she was just up there on her own with her guitar, and it was amazing.
