salvation through faith and having a relationship with Christ without having to be a member of the Catholic Church.

A few months ago, my husband and I asked Jesus Christ to save us. We admitted we are sinners and confessed that Christ is the only gateway to salvation. I believe we are saved and we really want to devote ourselves to living for Christ and deepening our relationship with God.

When I said this in the OBOB forum, I was told that we can only have a relationship with Christ by being in His Church, meaning the Catholic Church.

Do you think that you have a relationship with Christ?

Do you consider yourselves saved, or do you need to join a specific church in order to be saved?

Baptists seem to be as different from Catholics as I can find, that's why I'm asking this question here.

Growing in your relationship with Jesus means to know Him better, to love and obey Him more. "And this is the way to have eternal life-to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth" (John 17:3).

"Jesus replied: 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment.'" (Matthew 22:37-38)

Your growing love for God will lead you to obey His commandments.

"Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them." (John 14:21)

I do have a relationship with God. I spend a certain devoted time into reading the bible where God can communicate to me through His Word. Prayer is my time to praise God and to be able to pour my heart out. I also spend my time with other believers, whether it's here on this website or within my church. My church is not what saved me, it was by Jesus' blood on the cross and my belief in Him. Not my belief in my church.

Baptists and Catholics have little in common and I would look elsewhere.

To answer your questions: 1 Yes, 2) Yes I consider myself saved. 1 John is written so that we might "know" we are "saved." Salvation is not based on faith + merit, it is by faith alone (Eph 2:8), works come after our salvation but do not merit anything except us being faithful to God's plan for our life(eph 2:10).

That is GREAT!!!

Do you think that you have a relationship with Christ?

Yep! When we repent and ask for His forgiveness, we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter (John 14:26), Intercessor, and guide:
Rom 8:26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for {us} with groanings too deep for words;

Rom 8:27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to {the will of} God.

Do you consider yourselves saved, or do you need to join a specific church in order to be saved?
Yes, I consider myself spiritually saved - and I will be physically saved at the time of the resurrection. You do not need to be a member of a specific church - but should be a member of one that has sound, bibically based doctrine. There are some odd churches out there .

How did you come to the Lord anyway? I'm thinking that the Lord drew you to Christ (and we know from John 6 that He does this), and that He will guide you to the right church.

I got saved first. My husband and I moved here last year and it's a pretty remote place. My family lives nearby, but my husband's family is from Cleveland. We met in Chicago where he was an engineer and I was an intern. When we were expecting our baby, we realized we didn't want to raise him in the city and we moved back to my home area in the plains. We love it here, but my husband couldn't find an engineering job way out here so he is now driving a truck for a living.

I get lonely when he is away at night, as you might guess, and he's away two or three nights some weeks. We don't have cable out here but our radio reception is good, so I started listening to Christian radio. After about three months, I realized I was hearing the truth about God for the first time in my life. I prayed for God's forgiveness while listening to the radio. When my husband came home, I told him about it and he started listening to Christian radio, too. Now he's born-again, too.

Praise the Lord! I have a good friend who was raised Catholic and was saved as a young adult. I know this is a little confusing for you because you feel as if you are going against everything you were taught. However, there is freedom in Jesus Christ. This is something that I personally feel that the Catholic church has missed out on. We are free from the bondage of the law, and many of the requirements of the Catholic church are similar to the bondage of the old Jewish law. Being saved by grace means that our works are done out of LOVE for Christ not due to some misguided idea that these works can get us into Heaven. Only the blood of Christ saves us. Our works are simply the result of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit inside of us. We are saved in a moment and nothing can remove us! We stand firm on the promises of God and even if we do not keep our promises, even if we are liars, God is NOT a liar. If He reaches down and saves us from a life of sin, we are saved! Nothing on this earth, nor the powers of Satan, nor anything that we do can remove us from this.

It is good to be faithful to one church. It is a place in which you can worship the Lord, and learn about His word. If you need help finding a good solid church, PM me with your exact location. I have been able to find several people churches via my contacts in my family. I would love to do this for you too.

Actually there's a Baptist Church in our community and we're planning to visit there next Sunday.

1. I think I do have a relationship with God. When I let go of the pride I had for most of my life and prayed to God for forgivness with a humble heart he made me a new creature.

2. Yes I consider myself saved. I believe I can know I am saved just as James said. I don't have to worry that I'll commit a sin that will undo my salvation. Sin can not overcome the blood that Jesus shed for me.

3. You certainly don't need to join a specific church in order to be saved. You'll find no such thing said in scripture. Just look at the track list of churches past and present that have said you had to belong to their church to be saved...

Do you think that you have a relationship with Christ?

That's great to hear. Also thank you for sharing your testimony. Just remember there are many varieties of Baptist churches. Some very biblicals and others not so much so. I pray though that God leads you to a good fellowship of Christians. Maybe you'll find a group of women to fellowship with when you husband is gone and they can be a blessing to you.

I believe that if you pray, the Lord will lead to the right church. I have no doubt that He has been working in your life right along. :)

Amen! There is definately freedom in Christ! God is ver powerful and nothing can change Him. You do need to find a good solid church and attend regularly. God loves when we come together in fellowship and worship Him.:groupray:
I feel that you do want to know Christ better, and worship God. All you have to do is open your life to Him. He will do the rest. God Bless!

Thanks for sharing this post. I echo everyone here. Find a Biblically sound church and more importantly pray where God wants you to be. The church isn't a building, it's a collection of believers and as someone said, the view that the church is part of salvation is laughable. Keep praying and if you draw near to God, He will draw near to you and guide your steps.

"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." - Romans 10:9

That is when you are saved. A Church isn't a building, and it isn't a denomnation. A Church is when two or more gather in His name and He will be there in the midst of them. That is a church. You aren't saved by the works of your flesh, but by faith and grace.

We can have a relationship with Christ by repenting our sins and seeking out the relationship with him. That's all. "Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, I will come in to him..." (Rev. 3).

Yes, I believe I have a relationship to Christ and that one need not join a specific church to be saved. GOD saves us, not "the church." The Church is the body of believers, working together for the glory of God. Finding a good church to attend is important. I don't think the denominational label of the church matters anywhere near as much as the hearts of the people in it.

A building is a building. But also Jesus is the church. And it is His church we worship. Not a building.
