View Full Version : Is it wrong o wear eyeglasses?
Susan

I am very nearsighted. Even this computer screen looks ill defined without my glasses.
However, after reading the writings of more than a few people, I am beginning to feel that wearing eyeglasses is sinful, or at least the ones I own are sinful to wear.
You see, my lenses cost an even 100 dollars (exttravagant no doubt, although that is the cheapest price I could find), and my frames, although very cheap, are the "small frames" which are so fashionable today, and too attractive IMHO.
I am afraid that I am sinning if I wear them though. :o
So is iit or si it not a sin to wear eyeglasses>

No! Absolutely not! Is it a sin to take medicine if you are sick or wear a hearing aid if your hearing is failing, or put socks on if your feet are cold?
I do not know who is telling you this but I would be very leary of them.

I've been reading what some people have to say about modesty and inexpensieness of dress, and I am afraid that maybe I am sinning. I want to be very careful not to sin. . .

I hadn't heard that.
Anyway, I wear eyeglasses...and I don't feel it's a sin.
I know God has a reason for everything...so I figure that also includes why I'm wearing glasses. :)

im not sinning, i wear contacts, i dont liek the way i look in them, i eat healthy cus i dont want to gain wait, i do a lot of things to keep my self looking good. Dosnt God want to keep your body as a temple? and havei t look good also?
Susan

I don't know where the dividing line would be between keeping God's temple and adorning it (an act of idolatry?)

Other people's standards do not define what God has for you. This is a perfect example of why we must pray before we make ANY decision. Don't ask us ... ask God. All sin committed is committed against Him.
Phillipians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Remember, God is NOT the author of confusion. If you truly seek Him on this He will reveal it to you. Nothing is to big or small for God!
Hope this helps.

Sandy

However I am wearing my glasses again because I can see so much better with them. Hopefully God doesn't think it's sinning. -^.^-

Would it be immodest to have open heart surgery?
Is it immodest to take Tylenol for a headache?
Now, if you had to have the super-duper glasses, fashionable tint, 24 Karat gold frames....then I could see your problem.
But you don't wear a burlap bag, do you?
Do you comb your hair? Brush your teeth?
Running into walls and tripping over curbs is not smart. And if you injure yourself, aren't you being disrespectful to the body God gave you?
Don't go overboard.
Peace,
~VOW

All glasses do is refract light so you can see.
It is not a sin.
Please do not listen to people who would say otherwise. They are wrong.

Susan,
It's not a sin to wear eye glasses. You should thank God that you are able to afford them, and I don't think God would expect you to go out and buy ones that were ugly.

Medical care is often expensive, but that doesn't make it sinful.
Look at it this way: If you had the ability to help someone who was nearsighted see better, would you do it? Of course! Would you worry that it was sinful? Of course not! You'd be glad that you were able to help someone.
So, make your eye doctor happy - wear glasses. :)

Susan, I wish you would go to a church that is less judgemental and more balanced. No one should be "after you" for wearing eye glasses, even ones that cost over a hundred bucks. It's really hard these days to find glasses any cheaper than that anyway!
If you need glasses, how stupid is it that some people would criticize you!

Indeed! When I went to get glasses, if I wanted anti-glare coating and pretty durable materials, and so on, I was pretty quickly up to $400! Still, compared to the cost of *NOT* seeing clearly... not a problem at all.

AAAAGH! It is not my church that told me this!

Like I said, my church is actually the opposite of this and a lot of things I mention, we're conservative, yet we are not into holiness that much.
That is why I am interested in holiness and read about it elsewhere. :)

no offence, that's nonsense.
Susan, a bit confused abt your question. are u asking if it is a sin to wear glasses which you consider as expensive ie it is a sin to put on expensive clothes etc.
if that is your question, then my answer is NO! God is EL SHADDAI - the Lord who is more than enough! He is not EL-CHEAPO.

I bet Paul would have worn glasses if they had been available! He probably would have done a lot more writing, since he had to dictate everything, it must have been complicated for him to get anything down on paper, and if he had an idea in the middle of the night, he would have had to find someone to write it all down for him.
There are no prohibitions in the Bible against getting good medical care!

It's just that you subscribe to so many kooky ideas that it's natural for us to assume that you're getting all this from your church.
If it's from other places, and your church is not kooky, why not give up all these readings that are mising you up so much? They aren't helping you, and you end up looking immature and silly. We know you aren't immature or silly, but you project that image by worrying so much about things that don't really matter.

Hi Jephunneh!
Well he had bad eyesight for three days... I suppose we could consider blindness bad eyesigth ;)
If memory serves, Acts 9:12 states that Paul was healed of the eye problems caused by his unbelief:
He has seen a man called Ananias come and lay his hands upon him so that he may recover his sight.
I think that means the bad eyesight is gone...
What do you think?

The reason that you have to wear glasses is because your genetic code is not perfect. the only people with perfect geans were Adam and Eve. Its not a sin to compensate for your imperfections. If God tells you to throw away your glasses because He is going to heal you then it would be a sin to continue to ware them. But I can not find that situation in your posts. Also remember that Jesus wore a very expensive garment, one without any seams. I don't think that I could find a garment like that even if I could aford it.

I bet God would heal you, then tell you to throw away your eye glasses!
I don't remember a single case in the Bible where God or His prophets told anyone to stop using their crutch, medicine or whatever, as a test of faith in His healing! He always healed, then the crutch was no longer necessary!

Wearing glasses is not a sign of a lack of faith. The cripple did not throw away his mat until after he was cured.
In response to your concerns about fashion, it is not wrong to try to look good unless an inordinate amount of time or money is wasted to do so. If two frames are more or less equally priced, do not hesitate to get the one that makes you look best. Sin enters when one chooses an extravagant frame. For example, diamond studded glasses are decadent and a waste of money that could be put to better use.

Oh Susan.... you are going to give yourself an early heart attack. I think that it's antastic that you care so much that you'll stop wearing glasses so that you won't be sinning, but don't worry your life away.
God knows your heart, and I'm sure that that counts for a lot.
About being attractive... I have a story...
I had this leather jacket when I was a kid. I absolutely loved it because I thought it made me look like a fighter pilot. Well, one time at a clothes drive at my church my youth pastor gave me this huge guilt trip until I gave away my jacket (which was going to Samoa :) ). That jacket cost my dad (who was only a firefighter) a lot of money and when he heard what happened, he was TICKED!
So he went into the church and took the jacket back.
Moral of the story: Don't feel guilty just because you have nice things because your parents work hard to get them for you.

OH yeah... he was great... three years later he kicked my sister off of the worship team because she was an "alcoholic". My sister was 15 and this girl was just being vindictive, but Chad... er I mean, the guy :) took the other girls word over hers... ridiculous.
The way the story really went is that a DARE officer was at her high school and asked kids in the audience to raise their hands if they'd ever had any alcoholic beverages. In honesty, my sister raised her hand sicne my dad had let her try some wine not too long before.
So you see where I'm going with this....
Oh yeah, the guy was such a great example!

I just went for an eye exam today, it's -10 in one eye, and -8.5 in the other. So, I am pretty near sighted. I hope this isn't a sin to be wearing them!!
But one thing I do think is that if God put someone smart enough on this earth to give us sort of a cure for our poor vision, then isn't it more of a blessing from Him to wear glasses? or even have glasses available to us?

I would know a lot of pastor's who would need to confess then! :D
And I wouldn't think that Jesus would have condemned anyone for that....
"You evil brood of Vipers, how dare you wear those glasses!! :help: Repent!" doesn't seem like a sermon that Jesus would preach.... lol at least not to me.
Matt 6:28-30 Stop worrying! :) life is definitely more important than whether you wear glasses of not :D lol

Susan... I can't believe you even feel you have to ask this question. God isn't watching your every move to pounce on you and yell 'YOU SINNED! ETERNAL D**NATION FOR YOU!'. He loves you, and wants you to be healthy and happy. If glasses will help you see better, it's not a sin to wear them. Glasses don't come much cheaper than $100, if at all. And God doesn't mind if you want to look good.
It's only when buying expensive glasses or looking good become more important to you than FOLLOWING HIM that it becomes sin.
