What does everyone use to create these armor peices and whatnot? Are the programs available for download? Where would we get a model to test armor on?

Hi Monksoup. Different designers use different graphics programs. Some use Photoshop. Some use GIMP (including me). Some use MS Paint.
GIMP is freeware, and has a fairly large user base, which makes it easy to find info on the advanced features.
You can get a character template by clicking on Armor in the menu bars at the top of the CF webpages. On the Armor screen you'll see 6 links at the top. One says "Get Character Items". Click that, and then click "Get (Male or Female) Body" at the bottom of the screen. You will see all the different body colors, and can copy the one you want to work with.
Hope this helps! :)

Just to add to what raven has said....
If you "Save As" on the bodies/armor pieces rather than do a copy/paste into your program, the transparency will usually be preserved.

LibertyChic is right about "Save As." Many moons ago I was learning to make dollz and their "accoutrements" over on Delphi forums. The teachers were called CT (CrowTalker) and WT (Wolve's Tears). These were not specifically Christian/Religious oriented, but more "secular." If I can find it, I'll post an angel doll that was made that looked like me.
