I don't have one "best" book! (Aside from the Bible, of course.)
I love to read and read and read... so I have lots of recommendations.. I highly recommend anything by C.H. Spurgeon. Andrew Murray's a good one too.
For contemporary, I enjoyed reading Jim Cymbala's "Fresh" books ("Fresh Faith," etc.. he's the pastor of Brooklyn Tabernacle in NYC) - his books greatly encouraged me in faith to keep pressing forward in prayer, cuz God can do miracles! :amen:

I will third that, The 12, yes ALL 12 Left Behind Book series was AWESOME!:clap: :clap: :clap: for fiction
I also loved the Love Comes Softly series by Janet Oke
Non fiction absolutely Corrie Ten Boom's "The Hiding Place" would be number 1.

I'm in the middle of Desiring God by Piper, and that may be the best christian book I've ever read.
I like all C.S. Lewis books. Loved the Great Divorce and the Screwtape Letters
Non christian lit: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy--most definately
