Melchizedek seems to be a big mystery. Hes mentioned in two time periods far from each other. Then hes mentioned in Hebrews. Does anyone have a clue just who or what Melchizedek is? Some people I know believe hes through out time and hasnt left but shows up from time to time.

Genesis 14:18 - And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Psalms 110:4 - The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Melchizedek, the king of Salem in the time of Abraham.

Many believe that Melchizedek was Jesus.Melchizedek appeared in Genesis to the patriarch Abraham. Whether he actually existed as a person or as an abstraction remains a mystery

Melchizedek first appeared in the Bible's Old Testament bringing bread and wine to Abraham after his victory in Genesis 14 over the four kings who had besieged Sodom and Gomorrah and taken his nephew Lot prisoner. In turn, Abraham gave Melchizedek as priest a tithe of ten percent of the bounty that he took in battle.

Psalm 110:4 names Melchizedek as representative of the priestly line through which a future king of Israel's Davidic line was ordained.

The future king - in Christian belief, Jesus Christ - is referred to as a "priest forever after the order of Melchizedek".

Hebrews 7:3 in the New Testament refers to Melchizedek as a king "without father or mother or genealogy", a reference which some Christians take as referring to Melchizedek's true nature as an angel or even as Jesus himself, appearing thousands of years before his Earthly incarnation.

Some rabbinic scholars identify Melchizedek with Noah's son Shem. The account of Melchizedek given in the Dead Sea Scrolls has also divided scholars into two camps, one that touts his existence as a mortal man and another that identifies him with the archangel Michael. According to LDS tradition, Melchizedek's blessing of Abraham at Salem is a priesthood authority whose keys were restored to Joseph Smith along with the keys of Aaron's priesthood.

When I read scripture I am always inclined to ask, "What does this text say about Jesus?" I do so because He is the driving force behind all revealed and inspired words. The account of Melchizedek seems to have been included for the one simple reason that God chose to do so to reveal something to us about Jesus. Without the Hebrew epistle the story of Melchizedek and the mystery behind his inclusion in scripture would remain so. The Hebrew writer completes the circle began in the book of Genesis when he or she explains why Jesus is a better priest than Aaron. Without the inclusion of Melchizedek in Genesis we would miss this gem of an explanation regarding the High Priesthood of our Savior.

Yes - Melchi-zedek is two Hebrew words meaning "My righteous King".

Hebrews 7:2-3 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

To Whom are tithes and offerings paid to - God Himself. The title "King of Peace" is in reference to Isaiah 9:6 which says that the Son born, the Child given, Christ, will be called the Prince of Peace. He is without beginning of days and end of life, meaning He is eternal, just as the Messiah was prophecied to be -

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

I believe he is a random guy or figure that God used to show the comming high priest.

Maby he was an angel, mabe he is a man, maby he was Jesus. I do not know. But I do know the point of his existence in the scripture. It is to show an outline of Christ.
