A couple of times. Good book, but I like that type of novel. After reading the books, watch the expanded LOTR movies, it does add a bit to what you'll understand.

Yes, I have read it a number of times and enjoy it every time. Reading it with someone is a nice experience, too. I know that some ideas in it are not biblical and some will not consider it good reading for Christians, but I can separate what I read and what I believe. I also like works by Ursula K. LeGuin, Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Asimov's Foundation novels among other things.
Have a great read! :)

I finished the Silmarillion and it was great! Morgoth, Sauron's boss, had a similar story as Satan. You can really tell that Tolkien was influenced by the Bible.

I started reading the Silmarillion... it took me 4 attempts before I could read it. I think it's one of those books you have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy.

I think they're great books for Christians to read. They aren't "Christian" per se, but Tolkien's Christian faith really shows through. The LOTR trilogy is a great epic of "Good vs Evil".

Yep - I've read the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Silmarillion several times. They are great! I think they really bring out the richness and vastness of history and time in our reality compared to God's. Allegory or not - you can definately see the parallels of Christianity in the stories, plots, and characters.
The Silmarillion is a difficult read, but worth it - adds much to the Hobbit and LOTR.

I've read the Hobbit and LOTR series several times as well as the Silmarillion, Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales, and many other books surrounding Tolkin's world. Being a fantasy writer myself and working on a big story, I find it to be a truely inspiring collection of work.

fantastic read! I love Tolkien's works. Wonderful, truly wonderful.
Last time I was in Britain I visited both his grave and Charlbury, where he got the idea for "Bag End". In fact, Bag End is there... I visited it, it's an actual house... No round doors sadly :-(

I find the Silmarilion, to be somewhat similar to what's told in the bible
(=it all has a beginning)

read the book, then watch the extended version of LOTR, it's awesome.
As a side note, my son wants to see it (he's six). So instead we got Veggie Tale's Lord of the Beans.

Hmm.. I've heard that said a lot about the silmarillion. I would say that the first 50 pages or so are a battle but after that you can really get into it and it answers all of those questions + the interesting background.
I'm a big fantasy freak myself, have any of you ever read the trilogy, Sabriel, Lireal and Abhorsen by Garth Nix? They are kinda childrenish but are still pretty good reads, I suppose they are similar to Harry Potter (curse me, I have mentioned LOTR and HP in the same post!) but I personally think better written and darker, which I like.

I am reading the LOR for the sixth time right now (Just finished reading the Hobbit for the sixth time).
I've read the Silmarillion twice, but since it is not a story but rather a collection of stories it takes me a lot longer to read it.
I have not read the unfinished tales, I'm trying to convice the wife to give them to me as a Christmas present :)

You're 14! What do you expect? It's not a book for someone your age. That book should IMO not be read until you're at a bit higher age. 18-20 I guess.
I love Silmarillion. Wonderful book!

I have the collection of unfinished tales, but haven't got around to reading them yet.
And I also love the Silmarillion. It was hard to get into it at first, but it's worth it because it gives such rich background to everything, and has good stories on its own.
