No doubt! I wonder if it wakes him to roll over on it in his sleep? When I had long hair I used to get tangled up in it in my sleep and wake up. I had to braid it.

Is having a beard important to the Orthodox religion?

I dont know how important it is to the Orthodox religion, but i do know that the Apostle Paul himself wore his hair long, as we can conclude from the passages where it is mentioned that "head bands," and "towels" touched to his body were places on the sick to heal them. The "head bands" indicate the length of his hair (so lets dance with this pious custom) which was tierd back in order to keep it in place.

Also, the Historian, ( i think his name was Egezit) wriest that Apostle James, the head of the Church, in Jerusalem never cut his hair!

Furthermore, here are some verses i found.

"To all men in general, ye shall not make a round cutting of the hair of your head, no disfigure your beard" (Lev. 19:27)
I suppose that the significance of this commandment is to illustrate that one is to devote themselves completly to serving God.

And.

"Razor shall not come upon his head, until the days be fulfilled which he vowed to the Lord: he shall be holy, cherishing the long hair of the head all the days of his vow to the Lord.." (Numbers 6:5-6)

Godbless.

In a fashion. The tradition behind beards is that it signifies a rejection of vanity and whatnot. Many of our monks (and some priests) have long, shaggy beards for that reason. They aren't required or anything, though, especially if it becomes a pride issue or if it presents a problem with employment.

It is pious to grow one.

I really don't think pride would normally be an issue, unless that priest spent all his time with a bunch of beard groupies like us here at TAW. I know when I was wearing a beard I felt a little embarassed at times, as most people in our culture don't like beards and think they look scruffy.

All Monks are not allowed to cut their hair, as far as I know.

You guys are so amusing!

Whenever I see an Orthodox or Eastern Catholic cleric on television my mother chuckles at me because I always have to say, "Look at that beard! Amazing!" She thinks it's so amusing.

I get an "Apache" beard, A 'patchie' here and a 'patchie' there, so I should have done likewise. I only have had my mustache since 20.

In church Sunday my husband came to the realization that he's the only youngish White guy in the whole parish who doesn't have a beard. None of the Arab guys have beards, though.

"Beards! Yay, beards!"

*shameless rip-off of the Red Strip beer commercials*

I like beards. Especially mine. It's not to iconic proportions yet, though. If it got anywhere near those, though, it would get ripped out by my girlfriend, who accuses me of being 'stabby' when I hug or kiss her.

I object to that statement. I shampoo and condition all of the hair on my head whenever I get washed. It's not that stabby...

I like having a beard, too, although I am currently clean shaven.

I may grow mine back over the Christmas holidays.

It makes me look like a biker, though.

I do too. I hate stubble. But if I end up marrying a fella who has facial hair, I would hope that he would grow it out until it's not scratchy.

My son doesn't have much of a beard with a patch here and a patch there. And one side has more of a beard than the other. So he shaved it off, hoping to stimulate more growth. It is frustrating for some men more than others.

Please let me know if shaving helped him at all.

I have been shaving a lot, and I have seen very little improvment.:sigh:

That will not work. Shaving one's hair cannot make it grow back fuller or thicker.

Matrona is right. It's a liberalist myth. You simply have to wait to grow older.

Who says?

He was told to shave it off by the priest because his beard looked so juvenile.

It might be hormonal.

Some guys have a full beard almost immediately when they stop shaving for one week.
Those are the guys who must shave twice a day to please their ladies otherwise
the stubble will chafe those most delicate feminine faces when they try to bestow a kiss.
My dad had that type of growth.

My son seemed to inherit my husband's beard pattern more than my dad.
He doesn't have the hair on his chest that my dad had either.
My dad was tall, dark haired and handsome with a full chest of hair and a heavy beard.

My husband is tall, light haired and also handsome without a hair on his chest and a light beard.
It took a long time for him to have a respectable beard with its characteristic orange
from the Swedish/Finnish/Norweigan genes.

The idea that shaving hair makes it grow back fuller is just an old wives' tale, it's absolutely impossible for it to be true.

What? New hair follicles don't grow? :)

Yes, but the blunt, shaved ends do make your beard look slightly fuller for a second or two.
