Hello,
I've been wondering this question in my mind. Is there any certain way or music genre you must listen to in order to lift up the Lord. The reason I ask this is because a lot of my family disagrees with me listening to contemporary christian and a little christian rock.. and in my eyes I don't see it a big deal, but God's ways are much higher than mine.
I'm just very fascinated with guitars/drums/bass and I don't see God would condemn me for it, but I'd like to hear your thoughts and if you have scriptural support for your response, I would love to read it.
God Bless,
Justin.

Justin, any music that puts you on a spiritual prayer or praise to God should be celebrated! God asks that we worship in spirit and truth. so if it's in your heart to Him... then praise God!!! i like to listen with the head phones on so i can turn it up and get lost in my special moments with God. being in the spirit is quite a joyful exsperiance! you just absorb all that takes you there.    :D  :groupray:

Everything is lawful to us. Musical styles isn't an issue.

God doesn't care what the style is as long as the heart is true. There is nothing Biblical to support the notion that some genres are better or worse than others. I even listen to Christian "unblack" metal on occasion, not saying that is for everybody.

Music is just sound. The offensive or uplifting part is the Song. It matters not what kind of instruments or tempo the music uses. It matters a great deal what the message of the Song is giving. So words and the message of a song can be offensive to God and hurtful to our relationship with God. People need to just listen carefully to the Lyrics of a song and ask themselves would i sing that song with Jesus standing next to me?

This is sorta of what I was trying to get at. Normally, and from my experience with heavy metal, I have a bad vibe running through me when I listen to it. No matter what the words are, it just seems like the devil is there.
And the thing I could never understand with Heavy Metal Christian.. is all the screaming... does God really want you screaming at him?
God Bless,
Justin.

If you're praising Him, why not? While Psalms 98 doesn't specify the decibels, it does say loud!
Whatever fills us with Jesus's love and the Spirit, I think, is a step in the rght direction, whatever the genre is.

It's just not the genre for me. It's probably b/c I used to listen to it b4 I gave my life to Christ, but I still get the same vibes / thoughts that I had before, now... and that's no good.
God Bless,
Justin.

Music can bring back memories. You seem to be associating Metal music with your former atheist life. If listening to it brings these memories back, then i suggest you avoid that music. I think that the experience of a Christian who has only really ever listened to Christian Metal music would be different.
It might be like a new Christian who has overcome the alcoholism of their former atheist lives. They often become very anti- alcohol and are attracted to churches that teach total abstinence from drink?

"Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise." - Psalm 98:4, KJV :)
You don't have to like it, but there is nothing Biblical against musical genres. I for one, when I'm mad and need to blow off steam will be listening to HEAVY Christian music. And since it is Christian, the lyrics steer me back to God. So to each his own.

The way I feel about that is.. if you don't like the music, then you're not going to sing praises and rejoice as God wants you to... you will be thinking about how much you can't stand the music rather than worshipping him.

Psalm 150
1 Praise the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with tambourine and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.
Obviously, the bible has nothing against stringed instruments or drums. Just make music with the purpose of honoring God and it won't matter what style it is.

Psalm 150:3-6 "Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. The only scripture that might apply here is the one that talks about stumbling blocks. So if that music is a stumbling block to your family then you need to consider if you should listen to it while they are around or if you do then maybe as one person sugested use headphones. With headphones you will need to be careful about the volume for two reasons
1. When loud it is generally easy for others to be able to hear the music and words
2. When loud it can damage your hearing (thats why I often have trouble sometimes with hearing)

Hi Justin!
I used to play in several Christian metal bands, the largest being Paradox (who toured with Barren Cross in 88'). I've seen the reaction of people (mostly those 30 yrs and under) as they listened to our music. Some got 'fleshy' with it, some didn't. I did notice more got into the music than the message. Also, i believe Psalm 98:4 is refering to a 'loud noise' is the sense of victorious joyful praise, not sonically loud distorted music, screaming vocals, piercing guitars, etc. I mean i used to really 'flesh out' on splittering harmonics filling a room at a decible level of over 100 db. There IS a balance, just like there's a balance in everything in life. What's sin to you (which can be dangerous) may not be sin to another. By what you've expressed so far i'ld stay away from the really 'hard core' stuff - even if the lyrics are good.
I still write, play, and sing some neo-classical metal, but presently my music partner and i are placing actual Bible text to a type of agressive cinematic style of music (www.wordsong.info). I'm much more peaceful/content with this style. Maybe i'm just getting old .
Hope this helped some..

hey i used to listen to nothing but hip hop day in and day out from vanilla ice..(hahah) to the lox...since i can remember ...anyhow my father was listening to this group third day a while back and to be honest i really got into it especially after i was saved..then i found kutless and casting crowns....even amy grants el shaddai became part of my playlist..pretty funny how God works when you go from Wu Tang Clan bumping out of your speakers to a christian hymn..He works in mysterious ways..but as far as the music goes when i alone in my car and find myself listening to these songs, (you are holy, god of wonders, sea of faces, strong tower) i find myself also liften his name on high and its like im in church praising him and praying to him and this helps me to get closer and closer to him and find out how great he realy is..........

It is awesome that you want to Praise the Lord. There is no rule to what you listen to. The more you praise Him the more your spirit will figure out what is right for you and God. Now dont get confused there is also worship. Praise and worship are 2 different things. When you go to a church service. The music starts out with some upbeat songs (Praise) then as they go on they slow down the music (worship) and thats when you can really get close to God. The Lord wants us to worship Him. Love and adore Him. I pray that the Lord touches you on this matter. In Psalm 98 it talks about praising the Lord with loud cymbals and make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

I was too young at the time to know about Christian metal, but I did recently discover Barren Cross.
