What is the stance of WELS and LCMS on abortion? Is abortion prohibited in all circumstances? Thank you

For the LCMS position, see the following links:

These also have links to other documents that explain further.

I think you will find numerous discussions at WELS web site.
Here is one discussion http://www.wels.net/cgi-bin/site.pl?1518&cuTopic_topicID=27&cuItem_itemID=6528
If you click on this link you can then search for others.
On the left side of the page is a search window you can try too.

The late former LCMS president A.L. Barry wrote an excellent piece entitled:
What About Abortion (https://www.lcms.org/graphics/assets/media/LCMS/wa_abortion.pdf#search=%27That%20They%20May%20Have%20Life,%20LCMS,%20A.L.%20Barry%27)
which I would heavily recommend. (It's in *.pdf format...thus you would require Acrobat Adobe to read it.)
There's also:
(http://www.lutheransforlife.org/Life%20Issue%20Info/Abortion/catechism_-_on_abortion_and_life.htm) The Lutheran Catachism Regarding Abortion and Life (http://www.lutheransforlife.org/Life%20Issue%20Info/Abortion/catechism_-_on_abortion_and_life.htm)

well, if a woman asked me if she should get an abortion, i would tell her no. if she told me she just had an abortion, i would comfort her and love her. is that basically the LCMS stance?

I don't know if that's "official," but that's what I would do.

'Tis also what I would do. Abortion is sin as far as I am concerned, but it is not a sin so egregious that we should shun a woman who's had an abortion.

You won't get an argument from me.
However, if she is not remorseful for what she has done she still needs to hear law and gospel.
