Hi there everyone. Here is a backstory of me first if anyone is interested as well. Sorry it is quite a bit lengthy.

When younger, I had always believed in God and Jesus and went to church every once and a while. But I had never really thought religion truly important until about a year and a half ago. Honestly before that I thought "Well, I believe in God, I believe in Jesus, basically all I need to do is is not kill anyone, not have sex before marriage, lying's ok as long as it's nothing too big, etc." I made a "pledge" to not have sex before marriage but soon saw that tested. Due to my lack of faith, I seriously considered having sex just because I felt like it and wanted to. Thankfully I didn't, however. Due to sheer curiousity one day I happened to stumble across an online Christian site. As I started reading some articles online about different issues and religion, I realized how much more important God really is. The next year would be extremely difficult for me. I knew that I should be making more of a commitment to God, but I wasn 't. I knew there were some things that I shouldn't be doing but I kept doing them anyways. I would keep pushing religion aside because I felt so guilty about everything that I had done wrong. Then, around five to six months ago, I began exploring Christianity once again. This time, I didn't push it aside. I began reading some scriptures and I truly realized how much God loved everyone so much that he sent Jesus to die for our sins, and that to be forgiven all I need to do is to ask it and believe in Jesus. I started changing my life around, trying to make God my #1 priority. Two and a half months ago though I went through a test of faith. I questioned God and if He even existed, what if Christianity was wrong, etc. I felt really distant from Him, but still in my heart I knew he was there. Lots of praying and help from other Christians helped me to overcome this problem though, and I think in a way I came out of it a stronger Christian. My faith seemed it has grown even more. I have started attending church more often now and applying Christianity more to my life. I've also decided to study the whole Bible for the first time because I wish to grow stronger in faith and form more of a relationship with God.

Honestly I'm not too familiar with the different versions of the Bible. My family owns two copies of the King James version and I have attempted to read it before. However, I found it difficult to read and interpret due to the "Old English" style of wording. Can anyone recommend to me a version of the Bible that is a little easier to read? All replies are greatly appreciated, thank you. :)

There is the NASB, NIV and NKJV. Ask at your bookstore for one of these and they'll help you.

God Bless you,

Welcome to CF, and welcome to the faith!

Yes, you will not grow as a Christian if you don't read the Bible. Probably go for the New International Version (NIV). And start with one of the gospels - maybe Mark or John.

I've always liked the NIV. The NASB is harder to read than the NIV, but not as hard as the KJV.

Many people find Good News for Modern Man a very helpful translation. It is written at the level of the average newspaper and explains complicated ideas in very plain terms.

King James is great for Bible memory, IMHO - the language has a wonderful flow to it. Personally I find the convoluted and awkward structure of the NIV confusing.

You know what... see if you can find a J.B. Phillips translation of the New Trestement! Very, very readable!

The New Living Translation seems the most clear to me but my preferance is NIV. You may want to buy a study bible. They contain explanations of particular verses at the bottom of the page and are most helpful. May God bless all of your efforts !

A great way to get a feel for a Bible version, and see if it's right for you before you buy it, is to check out an online Bible first. BibleGateway has many, many versions of the Bible available to read online: http://bible.gospelcom.net/versions/ . You can go there and read various passages from the NIV, NASB, NKJV, etc., (all of which are version I and others would recommend) and see which ones you like the best. Then you can go pick up the right one for you, or you can read through the Bible online.

There is also some amazing (and free) Bible software available at http://www.e-sword.net . Read the testamonial page if you want to see how much God was involved in getting this software out to people, free of charge - it's pretty amazing. Anyway, you can download a number of Bible versions with this software, and it gives you the ability to compare the wording between versions, set it up as a parallel Bible, use a built-in concordance, etc. There are also a number of commentaries you can download into the software to help with your study of the Bible. I use e-sword all the time and it is an amazing resource (I'm a new Christian too) for helping to understand certain passages.

What I got was a NIV students bible (it was actually a gift). It had a reading plan, a subject guide (so if I wanted to read specific passages dealing with say "grief" I can look up "grief" and it gives me a bunch of passages).

It was second hand from my boyfriend (it was the same students bible that he had 15 yrs ago). So I would recomend going to a christian store and take a look at a couple of different ones.

I personally love the New Living Translation. I also use my husband's Amplified Bible.

www.biblegateway.com is a great reference, you can look up passes to find out what book and verse they are or look up passages (Ex. Luke 1:5) and find it not only in one verison but several. It really helps when you begin studying the Bible, it's helpped me so much, I still use it everyday.

I'm all for the details so I loved the Amplified Bible because it explains things, like Jesus' metaphores which confuse me often. Also it gives historical reference, which I love. Sometimes even in a chapter something can be put into better context with his historical position.

I also joined a Bible Study Group. Having people who've been studying the Bible for longer than I've been alive to ask questions and discuss thing with has been great.
