rnmomof7, are you still an RN? What kind of RN were you? How (in the world) did you balance being a nurse with having 7 kids?
And lastly, why have you not joined us in the Healthcare forum Erwin newly created last week (or so)?

Yes I really am a RN ( even if I did stay at a holiday inn:) . I have not worked since a car accident 3 years ago that ruined what was left of my back :(
I had always worked and loved med surg and that was my primary field . But I also did addictions counseling/nursing
My last position was a supervisor in a detox unit as I am also a certified alcohol / substance counselor .
Actually I was a teen age bride and mom. I returned to college when I was 30 and I had 2 more children while I was in college.
I have a passion for nursing, it is one of the few fields that is truly both a vocation and advocation .
I was blessed to meet and minister to many kinds of people.
I worked nights when I had little kids, and then days when all were in school.
Two of my children are nurses now.
I kinnda strong armed the youngest one into a degree in nursing telling her she needed a degree that would get her a job...
One day she thanked me for making her do that. She is a labor and delivery nurse and says she is blessed that she loves going to work every day.
Like her mom and brother she loves her vocation .
I have just dropped all the heavy forums so maybe I will join the health care one.. let me think on it :)

I think it was while I was a student and I had an opportunity to 'adopt ' an elderly widow lady with no family to love her.
She was kinnda "difficult" for the regular staff. She was an only child married to an only child and she had only one child many miles away .
I thought she is difficult because she has no one.
So I used to bring her home cooked food and mystery books and prayed with her.
I knew that I would meet many such people and asked God to teach me what I needed to know to be a good nurse and to give me a heart for the patients.
When people are in pain they are very vulnerable and need nurturing as well as medicine.
Wow I really miss it !

I think that is why my daughter stayed part time 2 days a week after she had her children . Nursing is more than a job. It is a calling IMHO :)
How did you find your way to CF? What are your favorite areas to post in?
Actually I wandered into CF almost 4 years ago by accident.
I joined and posted a while, and then just left.
Then a little over two years ago I was wandering lost and aimless again on the net and came onto this really great Christian site.. so I decided to join. BUT then I realized I already had joined a couple years before. So I wrote and got as new pass word and have not left since .
When you are staff a lot of times you just stop posting , so this is nice :)
My areas of interest are any area of Theology and any unorthodox theology. But posting as staff can lead people to believe that you have a bias or something . So I rarely post anymore :(

I have Firefox as well and the banana keeps on dancing.
I had once a problem with Firefox here on CF - could not rep or bless anyone. It turned out that there was a problem with one of the plug-ins I had installed. After I installed updates for the plug-ins, something went wrong. I threw them out one by one and finally I was able to rep and bless again.
Another thing, Firefox got updated recently. Did you get the latest version?

I found this in Firefox Support - animated images or problems with animated images (see no. 3)

If that does not help, maybe ask around in the Computer & Internet forum here on CF or on the Firefox Support forum.

So your an RN :).
When I go to college that is exactly what I want to major in. I want to go into the mission field as an RN so I can help out in any way shape or form. Also, for major diasters like Katrina, I'd love to go help them down there. What exactly did you take when becoming an RN?

I did a mission to Mexico and part of it was nursing :)
I guess I took the pretty standard subjects.
All the regular college introductory subjects ( English, math, logic, economics ... those kinds of things ) and then specific to my course of interest Anatomy and and Physiology , Microbiology , and courses in the various areas of nursing specialties .
It is a demanding program but worth every minute

Yep, the initial RN mean the nurse is registered with the state (Registered Nurse) . You get that title because you have qualified by graduating from an approved program and passing the National exam that gives you the license .
Medical school is for Doctors. Medical school follows earning a Bachelors degree from a college or University. THEN they apply to med school .
Nursing is taught on the undergraduate level.
Generally nursing programs are general knowledge ( that you will need for the testing and the practice)
A speciality can be learned on the job .
Usually a hospital wants you to have some time doing Med/ Surg work as a foundation and then if you have an interest in a certain aspect of nursing you apply for those positions. If you stay there long enough it becomes your speciality through study and inservice training
You can also study on the graduate level if you want to do something like Family Practice medicine as a nurse practicer .
I personally liked "floating" . That is going where the hospital wanted me.
I got to work Peds and ER and post op and nero and ortho etc that way. I really liked the diversity and change.
I have a son that is a nurse, he works in gerontology and loves it .
He now goes from one facility to another teaching "restoration" as well as having a population that he works with directly. He learned all he knows on the job

No matter where you want to use it i would always recommend a BSN (bachelor degree in nursing )
That gives nursing and leadership skills that are always useful.
But because of the cost and time many people do a 2 year program.
What you need the most for the mission field is a new heart, if you have that God will see that you have the skills you need . Honest !
When I was in Mexico one did not need to be a brain surgeon.
Take the vitals and a good history . Clean a wound. look in ears and throat.
The poverty of the 3rd world needs that new heart and skilled hands. God will use what ever you bring :)

What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory?
I think it was the year my 4th son moved to South Carolina.
I was so lonely and felt so abandoned I did not even want to have a family thanksgiving so I made reservations for my husband and my son still at home and his girlfriend at a restaurant.
We went to dinner and enjoyed the meal, but through it all I remembered the year before when the 6 local kids and their families all sat at our family dining room table.
All I wanted to do was cry and grieve the loss of my son and his family.
When we got home there was a knock at my front door and when I opened it there stood my son and his family. My youngest son called him and told him how heart broken I was , so he packed up the family and drove 15 hours to come home to see me.
I still cry thinking about that day.
We had a big thanksgiving dinner that Saturday with all but the navy son present.
God has recently reminded me of that as now 4 of my children and their families are now gone. Thanksgiving remains a mixed blessing for me because my table is missing most of the babes I raised and their beloved spouses and children.
But I can and do still give thanks for the blessings of raising and having them to love :)
A very blessed thanksgiving to you and your family , thanks for asking
