I am not too sure about this, but if one recieves a pen (a nice pen) as a gift, doesnt it have a special meaning behind it? What is the significance of recieving a pen?

Not that I know of, but nice pens do seem to be frequent (traditional?) gifts for graduations, or when you leave a job.

I think a pen as a gift refers to the maturity of oneself. It's a very professional gift, as some might call it. Depicting the recent growth a job atmosphere or promotion.

It is also a frequent bar mitzvah gift, so that makes sense.

As a gift to a student, it shows that the giver has confidence in you as a scholar and a person of great knowledge and intelligence. You give nice pens to people you think will succeed in life.
