Ceris, what are you the "Designated Semper Reformanda Blessing Collector" for? Is it for some lofty purpose (like buying the Holy Grail (which has already been bought (by the OBOB))), or is it for something more personal in nature? :D

Meh, we'll see about that. Maybe I will and maybe I won't. But hey, doesn't matter because I'm not weird enough to stand rather than sit in front of a computer while typing on it. :P At least, not most of the time . . . :D

I am the
"Designated Semper Refermada Blessings Collector because that forum (aka the Calvinist Forum) decided a few months ago to save up to buy one of the Ten Commandments. We need 5 million, but we currently only have 360,000 or so. I collect all the blessings for buying the Ten Commandments. Of course if anyone has any burdensome extra blessings on their hands . . . Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean, know what I mean? ;)

The best thing to do would be to contact a moderator or other staff member and tell them about the stalking. We take stalking very seriously here at Christian Forums and do not view it lightly in any way. A good thing to do would be to provide the moderator with copies of any stalking/harrassing PM/emails that you might have recieved. That is what a member should do in that sort of situation.

Sure, I'm studying at Santa Clara University (www.scu.edu) in the San Fransisco Bay area of California. I'm a Religious Studies Major and have one school year left until my Bachelor's degree. After that I plan to go on to Seminary to study to go into ordained ministry in the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination.

Isn't Santa Clara a Jesuit school? I'd love to hear how you decided to be a RS major there, if you're PCUSA.

I think it's cool to have a diverse background like that, but I haven't known many people smart enough to figure that out at your young age.

What seminary do you plan on attending? Hopefully, I'll be done with my MDiv at Fuller before you graduate. There are a lot of PCUSA students there. If you're considering Fuller, I'd be happy to show you around sometime or fill you in on any questions you might have.

What was the moment you knew God was real?

Funny you should ask that because I don't think there ever was a time (as far as I can remember at least) where I didn't think God was real. I was raised in a Christian family where my father has been very much a large influence in my faith and was raised in my church ever since I was able to attend Sunday school of any kind. I remember being in preschool (at my church) and being taught about God and Jesus. My faith started to become a personal thing when I was in Jr.High, but I'm pretty sure I always believed in God.

Yes, Santa Clara is a Jesuit school. I knew I wanted to go there when I first visited my junior year of high school. One of the main reasons that I wanted to go there was because it is a Christian university (in high school, I was *always* in the minority as a believing Christian). During my fresman year at Santa Clara I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do for a major. At one time I thought about archaeology or physics another time, so I wound up just sort of stalling for time by taking General Education classes. During the first year there I had gone and really didn't have many friends there, especially during the winter quarter. I'm an introvert by nature, and so when my roomate moved out at the beginning of winter quarter, suddenly I found myself alone in my room with *no one* stopping by because my roomate was no longer there and I hadn't really actively made friends duirng that first quarter. So I wound up spending a lot of time alone and was forced to rely more on God (it was during that time that I also came across CF). Then during May of that time, I started thinking about the possiblity of being a pastor, of going into ministry. This was due in part to the high example of so many dedicated Christian teens that I came across in the Teens forum here at CF.

I spent the whole of the next summer trying to discern if God was really calling me into ministry. At the end of the summer, after much cotemplation, reflection, prayer, and seeking advice, I decided that yes God was calling me to towards ministry. So, the first day I got back to school, I declared my major as Religious Studies and switched 3 or my 4 classes to reflect that.

My time at Santa Clara has been rather interesting in that I have studied with at least 10 different Jesuit priests, all the while being in the minority because I am a Protestant. It has been very interesting because nearly all my religion classes have been taught from a Catholic perspective which has actually helped me better understand my faith. Sometimes I have agreed with the theology presented by my proffessors and other times I have disagreed with their various theologies that they present. In fact, my favorite religion proffessor was someone who could be actually described as a "liberal" Catholic. We disagreed on many points, but had the most interesting discussions on theology and faith.

Forgive my longwindedness (or is it longtypedness?), but you asked and I answered :D

As for seminary, well Fuller has always been a possibility, but right now I'm really keeping my options open. Princeton was also reccommended to me by my pastor as a very good Presbyterian seminary.

I'll PM you more about Fuller.

God Bless,
Ceris

No we keep a tally? No. No one bothers to keep records on such things. The mods can see all the appeals ever made. The one thing I can tell you is that in the year since the appeals started on CF, we have had 71 entire pages of appeals. At about 20 per page, that's about 1420 appeals!

In order to figure out how many have been reversed and how many have been sustained, I'd have to go through every single one.

Hey Ceris... I have always wondered, what does the name "Ceris" mean and why did you choose it for your screenname? :)

Ceris
15th September 2005, 05:09 PM
Well, let's see - I really love fantasy books and when I was in 6th grade the first fantasy story I ever wrote was a quick one page story about a wizard Ceris and his dragon (being a guy, the whole story was big battle scene). In fact, I still have it on my computer.

I'm pretty sure that I made up the name at the time (I have a thing where even though I lot to write, I'm horrible at making up names that I like. As such, when I come up with a good name I tend to use it a lot). Then when I got a little older and started doing stuff on the Internet I wound up using the name Ceris (pronounced Sear (rhymes with bear) riss (ryhmes with kiss)).

So whenever I would make a profile (for message boards or online gaming,or even a regular video game) I would use the name Ceris. It's become my default pseudonym. And it fits with a wizard/magician theme that I had going on with my avatar before I put my real picture in.

Ceris
27th September 2005, 02:09 AM
I take it you mean am I starting exams soon? Well, no not really. I'm actually in my second week of classes due to the fact that my school is on a quarter system and as such starts in late September and doesn't get out until June.

Some cool stuff - I just started taking Biblical Hebrew! A few Religious Studies majors bugged a proffessor into teaching a few of us the language which is absolutely awesome because my school almost never offers classes in Biblical Hebrew (it does, however, offer classes in Biblical Greek). That means that I'm now taking 5 classes, so I'm going to be rather busy this term.

Wouldnt chucky peanut butter be more sticky in your mouth?
Funny story? OK :D
So I was fixing lunch for my kids once and I asked them if they wanted chucky peanut butter or smooth peanut butter.. They both said smooth because they decided they didnt like chunky (They are 6 and 4)
So... They saw some peanuts in the pantry and asked if they could have some peanuts with their sandwhcih, and I'm like ...um ok sure.. Normally you would ask for chips.. but no..

what was the hardest lessons you've learned as a Christian?

Ceris
29th September 2005, 11:45 PM
Probably the hardest lesson that I learned as a Christian was a lesson that I learned over this past summer - and that lesson that I learned is that I can be doing stuff with the best intentions but still inflict great harm on people. This all had to do with me and my gf , where we are in a long distance relationship and I was hanging out with one of my female (Christian) friends at college. The friendship between me and this friend was never more than a friendship, but I was spending waaay too much time around her - so much time that my girlfriend was starting be really hurt by my actions.

This went on for months with my girlfriend constantly telling me she was uncomfortable with the situation and I kept not totally understanding why. It got to the point where one day during the summer I went and visited this friend who was an hour and a half away. I had told my gf about this the night before and I could tell she was kind of uncomfortable with it, but I still went anyways. Then during the middle of that day, my girlfriend called me (in tears and very much hurt) and told me that she wanted to end the relationship because she couldn't keep going on in this situation where I was hanging out almost exclusively with this other girl. She then proceeded to hang up and wouldn't return my calls. I went though the rest of the day (visiting with this friend) until I got back home in the evening and immediately called my girlfriend.

It was two things that really made me realize how much wrong and pain I had been causing my girlfriend - when she told me she wanted our relationship to end because she couldn't take it anymore and during that day that I was with my friend, a person asked me if the two of us were boyfriend/girlfriend. That really cinched it for me.

So when I got home that night I called my girlfriend and had what was possibly the most gutwrentching conversation of my life. For over two hours we talked, we argued, we cryed, and finally we came to the agreement that our relationship was not over, that I had been causing my girlfriend harm without knowing it, and that I would stop being close friends with the other girl.

That is probably the hardest lesson that I've ever learned - the lesson that even though what I am do may be ok in my eyes, it might very well be causing harm to another and as such, I should no longer be doing that thing. It brings to mind when Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:12 - "Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial.

Ultimately, at tough as that time was, my relationship with the woman I love is soooo much stronger, healther, and better for it. I consider that as the first real test of my love for the woman that God has blessed me with.

Forgive my extremely long windedness, but this is the first time I have ever really put this story "out there" where anyone can see it. It's not something that I normally tell to people.

Thanks for listening. I hope you can make sense of the mass of words that have burst forth out of my fingertips into this post.

God Bless,
Ceris

Ceris

I read one of the Dragon Riders of Pern by her. However, I don't paticularly enjoy her writing style. But that's just how my mind works.

My favorite is Magician:Master by Raymond E. Feist - At home I have a signed copy of the author's preferred edition. This was the first large fantasy book that I ever read, I read it (it's 500 or so paperback pages) when I was in 4th grade. Its my favorite becasue it's a really good book and because it was the first one that I read.

Since then, I have figured that I have read (for leisure) over 500,000 pages (not exagerating) during my lifetime. :D

Edit:oops, you asked for movie.

WELL - my favorite Sci-Fi movie is RETURN OF THE JEDI

Why that one? Because the final battle and how it all is put together (the land battle, space battle, and lightsaber duel) is absolutely AWESOME! Beware: my geeky side is starting to show.

As for favorite Fantasy movie - hands down, Lord of the Rings - Return of the King. Nothing else comes close.

yeah? what's your favorite quote/scene from that movie? The least?

Mine was during the battle scene when Legolas singlehandedly slaughtered the oliphaunt and its riders, slid down the trunk with a smug face and Gimli, scowled at Legolas: "that STILL counts as ONE!!" :D And my LEAST favorite scene was where Sam came home...."I'm home" I get a lump in my throat cuz it means the end of an epic adventure. here's one!!!

what do you like to do on a rainy day? (it's raining here in Oregon, btw...)

Ceris

Hmmm - if it's the first rain of the season (down here in Southern California it normally doesn't rain the entire summer), then I'll go outside in the rain and stand in it for a little while.

1 of the funnest times I ever had in the rain - one time it was pouring like crazy (sheets of rain pretty much) and there was this HUUUUUUUGE puddle outside my dorm, so I put on my shoes, went outside and started tap dancing in it - ala Gene Kelly. :D

Another thing I've done and had fun with on a rainy day is to go and take pictures of the scenery - here's a few ones that I took last year (it had just stopped raining where I was)

Also, a lot of the time I like to go and read a good book (a good fantasy book) :)

Great pics - I especially like the one on the very left

But that's not why I am here :) ... I saw a thread, replied and ended up in another - the correct - forum

I did not know that I could be moved while replying to questions.

Wow - neither did I. And that goes to show you even though I've been here 1.5 years, I still learn something new about CF every week.

Hi, Ceris!

How's school?

Ceris

Wow - that was the quickest turnaround I've ever seen!

School is interesting - I'm currently trying to study some more vocab before my Hebrew class in a few hours. Fun. :)

Good luck with that. I found Hebrew vocabulary harder than Greek vocabulary because there were fewer cognates and related words with which I could make connections. OTOH, biblical Hebrew has a lot fewer words than biblical Greek.

One of my professors required the class to listen to the entire book we were studying 2-3 times per week. I downloaded an .mp3 of it and listened while driving, and it did help. Hebrew classes seem to emphasize reading aloud a lot more than Greek, and it seems to help. I don't quite know why. Maybe its because the vowels change in the middle, not just the prefixes and suffixes.

So while those flash cards may be your best friend when it comes to Greek vocabulary, I think in Hebrew hearing the words helps.

Still, flash cards do help. I always used colored ones. Pink for nouns and pronouns, blue for verbs, orange for adjectives, green for adverbs, yellow for prepositions, conjunctions and other "little words." Then, when I studied my vocab, I would lay them all out on a table and arrange them different ways - by roots, by "sound alikes" or in any kind of grouping that would help me see the similarities and differences. I would begin to remember that the word with the ayn was yellow, and the sound-alike with the aleph was pink, and not get mixed up so often.

Yup flash cards are working pretty well for me.

What is your favorite movie?

Ceris
28th November 2005, 04:29 AM
Well, I would have to break that down into a few categories. My favorite sci-fi movie is Return of the Jedi, my favorite fantasy movie is The Return of the King, my favorite historical epic is Gladiator, my favorite pharse/parody is Kung-Pow (it's a kung-fu movie pharse), my favorite comedy is Monty Python and the Holy Grail . . .

I have a lot of favorites :D

Hi! How was your Thanksgiving?

Ceris
28th November 2005, 11:25 PM
Thanksgiving was pretty good. I spent the first half of the week with my girlfriend and her family and then I drove down to Southern California to have Thanksgiving at home. I had the whole week off (yay :) ) and it was very relaxing. There wound up being about 25 or so of my relatives that got together at my house that day. Overall it was a very, very good break.

Now I need to get through this last week of school and then finals before Christmas break.

Now it's off to school again! Finally. 4 weeks was way too long of a break.

(bump)

Any questions anyone? :D

how was your New Year's?

Ceris
4th January 2006, 03:42 AM
New Years was . . . lonely at first actually. Originally I was planning on spending it with my girlfriend but unfortunately she had to fly back home the Friday before (work related things). Then I tried to set up plans with friends but none of those worked out because I lost my phone and all my friend's phone numbers. I won't be able to get those numbers back until I head back up to school soon. So at first I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone feeling very loney and sad when my parents actually showed up at the house and I wound up "freeing" a family friend (he's 14) from being stuck at home by himself and we wound up playing video games for the rest of the night. It actually turned out to be a fun New Year.

Have you seen the movie, "Chronicles of Narnia" yet? If not, GO SEE IT. It follows the book pretty faithfully. :)

Hey, buddy!! What was your favourite Christmas gift last year? :)

My favorite Christmas gift? Probably the ski trip that my family went on to Whistler in British Columbia. That was really fun. :)

And yes, I have seen the Chronicles of Narnia - twice actually. It was very, very good and I loved it.

School's going great actually. I only have three classes this quarter so that quite nice. After that I only have one more quarter left (spring) and then I graduate in June with a Bachelor's in Religious Studies. :D
