Okay, I heard a really good one today. The pastor at the church we were attending mentioned a survey done of youth in America. It described their perception of Christianity. When it was all said and done, the author of the survey summed up their view by describing it as

moralistic therapeutic deism

In other words, live by certain moral principles and you'll find health and hapiness because that's why God exists - to make you happy.

That may well be the best description of the ridiculous modern religious zeitgeist that I've ever heard. (Well, that and moral relativism.)

Sad, but prevelant (at least in many circles)...

With love in Christ,
Grace

Interesting, but not surprising.

ja, a lot of people think the purpose of the Church is to help or make life better.

Why not just skip the "deism" part and go see a psychiatrist?

It would be more intellectually honest.

Doesn't Fr Alexander Schmemman comment alot on contemporary Christianty painting the church as a place to get help in varius issues and problem that arise in 21st century society? I think he does, and it's brilliant. See "For the Life of the World".

Read the works of Metropolitan Hierotheos. He's excellent also.

Here, have some cake. This will make you feel better, and happier, temporarily. Haha!! :D
