Shalom!
I found an article about a "date palm seed" found during archaeological digs at Masada, thought to be from 73 CE or before that has been germinated and is growing. As cross-forum-posting [I think] is prohibited, I will post a link to the post that I put into the "biblical archaeology" forum for anyone who might be interested.
Although this does not exactly match the theme of Messianic Judiasm, I hope that it is not too far off topic to be appreciated here.
Todah!

Cool article!
Sallon said the project is more than a curiosity. She and her colleagues hope it may hold promise for the future, like the anti-malarial treatment artemisinin, developed out of traditional Chinese plant treatment, and a cancer medicine made from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree.
``Dates were highly medicinal. They had an enormous amount of use in ancient times for infections, for tumors, `` she said. ``We're researching medicinal plants for all we're worth, we think that ancient medicines of the past can be the medicines of the future.''
…If the plant survives, it will take some 30 years to bear fruit,…
Can you imagine the cost $$$$ to receive the medicine from such a, only kind plant! WOW. Someone will make out on this plant.;)

...Think of the glory given to HaShem for a "seed" left over from a besieged group of Jews holding out against the Roman army -- Then the "fruit" bearing medicines for our modern illnesses....
There is a "type" or a "shadow" of the "Lamb who's come to take away the sins of the world" -- Don't you think?

This is cool Ray! I actully have sprouted a date palm pit. I don't remember where the date was from but I wanted to see if I could sprout one as they are very hard to do. What I did was put one that I had dried out for about a month into a Jiffy pot ( a little peat moss pot that is held together with netting that can be directly planted after the seedling is high enough). I know that it is semi-tropical and this was winter time so I put the seed bearing jiffy pellet into a plastic container ( it was a swiffer floor cleaner container I had washed out with reusing it someway in mind) and watered it well. Then I stuck it on top of my little bedroom tv and forgot about it for about 6 weeks I'll guess.
Then one day I remembered and thought, it would be dead because I had never watered it again. But lo and behold, I opened it up and it was all condensed water on the top, and inside was a moist jiffy pellet that had fallen over and from it was a 10" long thin green stem! I was so excited! So I then placed it in its own pot, but it slowed down. Now it is growing a new stalk? from the middle and the first one is about 20" long. It sure doesn't look like a palm yet , but it is still growing. So I don't have to imagine how long it will take to grow this palm they are talking about! But I am happy I could actually grow my own lulav!

Thank you for sharing Zayit. Planting seeds in good soil is what we are to do, in love. It was my hope that this post would be inspiring to someone as it was to me.
