Hey Ya'll,
I'm so excited I could be floating! Anyways, I just got accepted to be one of the hotel volunteers at the 2006 ELCA National Youth Gathering. I am sooo excited! It will be in San Antonio, TX.
My fiance applied as well (about 2 months after I did) and has not heard back yet, so we are praying that he gets accepted as well. I am soooo excited!

That's very exciting! I hope your boyfriend (fiance?) gets accepted, too.
San Antonio is a fabulous city, I hope you'll have a free day to do some sight-seeing!

When I was there in 1995 they were doing structural renovation on it. I am assuming that is done now. I really liked San Antonio. I was there in Dec. 1994 and again on my Honeymoon in July 1995. It was fun to see the sights there. I recommend though that if one goes there at all the winter months are much more temperate than the summer.

A hotel volunteer is like a camp counselor or a dorm mom. They aren't with the kids all day, but as soon as they step foot back into the hotel, we have to be on our gaurd, ready to serve. The teens might come back feeling lost and confused, for some this might be there first time away from home and they get homesick, we are the ones that are behind the scenes making sure that the kids are loved and that things run smoothly at the hotel inbetween conference times.....so basically we dont get much sleep for those two weeks!

To put it bluntly, you are the Sheriff's and anyone steps out of line you gotta put 'em in the hoosegow. Having worked in the Hotel business for 9 years we used to hate groups like this because they didn't always have the supervision we felt they should. Many rooms got trashed. This is the reason that many hotels will not let people under the age of 21 rent a room on their own. Granted it is business for the hotel, but the rooms generally go cheap to groups like this and if any damage is sustained in any of the rooms the Hotel mgmt will consider letting other hotels take the hit next time.

Yeah, I hear ya, but that is why the ELCA pays for over 200 volunteers just to do hotel duty. Now mind you, there are 37 hotels on the list so thats only about 5 to a hotel, but there are other people there too, like the pastors and parents that help keep their kids under control. I know when I was in high school we had tape in's. Meaning that a piece of duct tape was put across the door and the wall so that if anyone tried to get out, it was noticable. Whoever it was was sent home immeidiately, if no confessor, the entire room. I dont know how all of this is going to fold out, but I know that 40,000 high schoolers in one place has got to make for one crazy adventure.

Threaten to pray over em if they get out of line. Do like the Baptists and hold a bible in one hand and the other hand on their forehead and yell "HEAL!" If that doesn't get em to settle down a bit nothing will. ;)

ummm...Scott, I realize that this is an ELCA gathering, but atleast give us some of our Lutheran dignity! We're definately not Baptists! Those people scare me!

I have to deal with baptists all the time...my whole family is baptist except for me (and KEn and Robert of course) of course I grew up in that tradition... (or lack there of) it still amazes me that I only remember getting communion 2 or 3 times as a baptist...of couse now I know that they only do communion quarterly, so I must have missed those Sunday's 4 times a year alot... I probly still have a few baptist idiosyncrasies (for a list ask Ken)

Let me know what hotel you get. Maybe I'll end up in yours. (or my group- I haven't been asked to chaperone yet)
Congratulations!

David Blaine is a magician. Same with Kriss Angel. Both have demonstrated in their acts to levitate/float off of the ground with apparently "no strings attached" lol

Isn't David Blaine the one that buried himself underground like for a week and lived off of a teaspoon of water a day or something like that?
