From the description of the fundamentalists in this forum, I must define myself as one, though I'm not as bold in the preaching of the gospel as I wish I was. When I walk in the streets I want to talk to everybody about Jesus Christ and His salvation, but I rarely have the boldness to even give a Bible to some stranger. (That was a prayer request, now for the real topic here).

Take the word fundamentalist and let's see what it really means. It describes a person who's building on the fundament, the fundament of the Word of Christ. Shouldn't every Christian be a fundamentalist in that figure of speech? ;) So why are we passed off as a loony group?

well, i suppose that 'fundies' etc. is just another catchphrase. It's easy to say, and dismisses one from further investigation.
I've often thought about your line of thought as well. For example, if one is an engineer, does one not hold to the fundamentals of engineering? or the fundamentals of mathematics? and so on.

The word Fundamentalist comes from the books "The Fundamentals" that were published as a response to growing liberalism in christianity. The reason that we are passed off as a loony group is because we refuse to accept bad doctrine to make others feel good. We reject notions like "there is no hell" and "everyone will be saved". Many people get uncomfortable around the truth so they attack the one telling it.

You've hit the nail right on the head. I remember a board I used to go to where everyone thought the liberal Christians were the best examples of true Christianity and those of us who refused to say other than what God's word said were considered hateful, intolerant, you name it. You can be popular if you tell people what they want to hear.

Liberal re-education of the culture makes us all look like Harry Hardwick. (http://www.landoverbaptist.org/thestaff/pastors/hardwick.html)

Taking into consideration what Lynn and e=mv said, I believe that the churches that are not very likely to fall into apostasy or become lukewarm in these last days are the ones with a fundamentalist view on Scripture, whether or not they actually refer to themselves by that term. What I mean by "fundamentalist view" is summed up in the definition of the term on this forum. It's also my not so humble opinion that all the Protestant denominations were historically fundamenalist. The great revivials in America were preached by folks from these churches. Some of America's best evangelists represented these denominations as well. When mainline Protestant churches (not all of them) began liberalizing, well, you now see the result--embracing immorality within the congregation (even ordaining some of the most egregious offenders), ear tickling instead of repentence and hellfire preaching, supporting all liberal political causes, etc. Those churches that still preach holy living and traditional doctrine and enforce personal standards of conduct of its members are increasingly viewed as hateful, homophobic, bigoted, misogynistic, and downright evil.
