I just became a catechumen today. I'll probably be chrismated in late October or early November, or possibly later in the winter, like February-ish. Depends on certain variables. Anyway, just thought I'd let y'all know.

Congratulations! My parish received an inquirer into the catechumenate today, too. :crosseo:

God bless you in your studies! This can be a hard time--know that every Orthodox church in the world is praying for you in the Litany of the Catechumens every Sunday.

A catechumen in the strict literal meaning is one who is studying the Orthodox faith in preparation for their Holy Baptism, Holy Chrismation and Holy Communion, which are the three sacraments (Holy Mysteries) of Initiation.

One who has been previously baptized in a Catholic or Protestant Church may be received by economia into the Orthodox Church by Holy Chrismation and Holy Confession.

When an inquirer expressses an interest in becoming an Orthodox Christian, and the priest deems that they are sincere, then they are received into the Catechumenate where they study the faith.

The Bishop is the one who makes the decision whether to Baptize a catechumen or to receive him/her by economia (dispensation) by Holy Chrismation if they have been previously baptized.

How about those already baptized into the Orthodox religion from birth?? Such as you and I?
Many blessings and much love, thank you.

People who were baptized as infants, were also given Holy Chrismation and Holy Communion, unless they were in a Communist Country as a child and could only be baptized by their grandmother or grandfather in secret. I knew several Russian ladies who only received secret baptism as an infant and when they came to America as adults had to study and prepare for their Holy Confession, Holy Chrismation and Holy Communion.
They went through the same course of study as the other catechumens.

If you received Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion as an infant, then you probably have been going regularly to Church to receive Holy Confession and Holy Communion. Is that the case?
