View Full Version : How often does your church sing "Shout to the Lord"?

Droobie
15th July 2002, 04:51 AM
This song has reached so many around the world and is sung by around 25-30 million churchgoers around the world each week! But would you believe it that at Hillsong they hardly ever sing it, if not only for special occasions. How has this song touched your life, and what is the importance of singing a 'new' song?

Psalm 40:3 "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many shall see and fear and put their trust in the Lord."

We love the song and actually sing it more than a few times a year. It's so edifying and lifts your heart to worship God even more.

We certainly are blessed!

My youth group sings it almost every other sunday. It's my favorite song also! :)

My Youth Group sings it every Thursday, but my church NEVER sings it as they are against any form of contemporary service :(

At the mission trip I was on last week we sang it about 10 times on the way there and back and about every day at the site. I really like the Insyderz version of it, personally.

The church we go to now NEVER sings it.

But the one we used to go to sang it EVERY WEEK! Tooooo much!

Our Church sings it every so often, so I put "a few times a year". They are very careful to rotate songs so that people don't get into a rut. Sometimes even the most beautiful song in the world can be played "to death", if you know what I mean. Our media director is so up on new music and older music that there is always a wonderful blend, so that everyone knows a song, no matter how old or young they are. I never come away feeling as though I have missed out on the wonder of song when I leave Church. :)

I just love "Shout to the Lord." :)

Another really great song is "Breathe" by Marie Barnett

Yeah, Breathe is another great song. Also, a very simple, yet quite powerful, song is Sanctuary. Lots of people have covered this one; so I can't say I know the person who wrote it.

I also love Breathe, and Shout to the Lord is one of my fave songs to sing at our service!! We usually sing it about 5-6 times a year or something. Every service is a bit much though, surely? There are lots of great worship songs out there!

I'm the defacto music minister in our church (no one else wanted it), and most of the congregation never heard of "Shout to the Lord" until I had our youth group sing it a couple of years ago. Since then I've tried to add a few contemporary worship songs in with our hymns (kind of difficult in a Baptist church). Shout to the Lord, Lord I Lift Your Name on High, Days of Elijah, and such. It's getting better each week.

You know what song I cannot stand? "Lord, I Lift Your Name On High" It's like the staple contemporary song. I see those tv churches singing it with the women in stale dresses and thin legs leading the congregation. It always sounds all over-produced and hokey. I complain because that's what my church is like, and that I am very particular about the music, especially the production. Rrrrrrrrrrrr

I like that song. The church I went to before used "We Will Ride" almost as a theme song. It's scriptural inaccuracy drove me nuts.

But I really like "Shout to the Lord" I just hope this new church has a contemporary music ministry.

"praise" songs don't do much for me. They are so hollow and often have just one verse repeated over and over. I perfer the traditional hymns, with the details of salvation and Calvary and hope. I tear up everytime I have to sing, "You ask me how I know He lives; He lives within my heart."

We sing it quite often. Too often considering we're a very traditional church and it means that other contemporary songs don't get a look-in...

Poiema

Our church rarely sings it, if ever. The truth is, I can't remember the last ime we sang it. We sing it at ladies' retreat every year and that's fine with me. It's a wonderful song but I Love that our church sticks to many of the old hymns.

I'm right there with you on that one, Sis! Yes, "Shout..." is a great song, as are some other choruses, but they are, as you said, often just the same thing over and over. Sometimes the songs can be so shallow I feel like there's nothing there except listening to the sound of my own voice ... and everyone else's. The old hymns are certainly a "safe" place to go for depth and consideration. Not that some of the more modern stuff isn't deep, but I'm hard-pressed to find them and you really can't go wrong with the hymns.

My Fave: "Be Thou My Vision"

Be Thou My Vision, O Lord of my heart,
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my Light."

I did a Google search. Are these the lyrics?

My Jesus, my Savior
Lord there is none like you
All of my days, I want to praise
The wonders of your mighty love
My comfort, my Shelter
Tower of refuge and stength
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship you
Shout to the Lord, all the earth
Let us sing.
Power and majesty, praise to the king.
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name
I sing for joy at the work of your hands
Forever I'll love you, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise I have in you

If this is what you had in mind, then I am not familiar with it. :)

i can not stand songs like this. There are so many beautiful songs in hym books, but it seems that every church that i have been to, is using them as paper weights. I have to ask why we have traded these beautiful songs that truly are great, and got projector music that is 7 words sung 11 times. it saddens me to see that the music is just songs that have no meaning to them. Songs, especialy ones derived from psalms, were not just to praise god, but they had a message in them, and they had true meaning, not just repedative garbage. It has been a long time since i have heard a great song. the last time i heard a great song, was the sunday after the 11th of september, 2001, where this pop star immitator sung amazing grace, but she butchered it by singing it britney spears style. I say we throw out the projectors, dust the organ off, and sing the great music that so many have forgotten.

We, like many churches today, meet in a hall that does not have an organ, I think organ music is wonderful, but I prefer to worship to a band because I like the style of music.. that's a personal preference.

I disagree with you that the modern songs are mere repetative garbage, there are times when you can break through in worship and really enter into God's presence in a tangible way, where you could weep at the beauty of the moment where you are really meeting with Jesus. in my experience this comes when the Holy Spirit is allowed to move in the worship and often just one word or phrase in the song is repeated almost as a meditiation.

Consider if you will what the bible says about worship... The creatures in the throne room of God do not rest day or night saying over and over, "HOLY HOLY HOLY IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND IS AND IS TO COME". Repetition in worship is biblical and can be powerful

Stupid repetetive songs like this, along with dumbed down generic repetetive preaching are some of the reasons I'm often reluctant to go to church on sundays. I just wish I could find a church that did away with singing and actually had some intellectual preaching. Stupid me, this is 21st century America, what was I thinking? And since when does singing a song cause you to enter into God's presence?

And since when does singing a song cause you to enter into God's presence?Dumbed down repetetive preaching would cause me not to want to go to church on a Sunday!! But I can't agree with you on the singing bit. The bible commands us again and again to worship God and even specifies different ways of doing that, obviously not all singing.. but many times it is referring to that.

Just one example would be Eph 5:19 which commands us: 18And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ This clearly refers to singing out loud and silently in our hearts.

Repetition of a phrase or chorus is entirely Biblical, see Revelation 4:8 or Psalm 136 and can help people really focus on an aspect of God and forget ourself

In worshipping God we are often able to sense God's presence as we focus on Him and not on self He comsumes all our senses as we purpose to give Him all the praise.

You are right that singing does not actually make us enter into God's presence, rather we place ourselves in a position where we acknowledge God's presence. Bob Kauflin says it well, the common practice of referring to corporate worship as "entering God's presence" or "entering in" isn't all that accurate or helpful. It might be more precise to say that we are gathering in God's presence or meeting to acknowledge His presence in our midst

The whole article can be read here http://www.crosswalk.com/faith/1206126.html

However, we are to approach God and enter His 'courts' with praise and thanksgiving (Ps 95:2, Ps 100:4)

We sing "shout to the Lord" hardly ever. We have sang it before but are Church does not do much PRAISE music. We mostly sing hymms. And I play the piano for are church. But we have sang it. That's about the ONLY parise song we have ever done. Most praise music we do not sing.

Hey, playing on the piano. IT's a LOT easyer to play hymms than it is to play "shout to the Lord" J/K

You might be right but i think that singing is one of the highest forms of human expression , a good song has the power to refresh both mind and soul :holy:

And theoreticly are we not all in gods pressance anyway . singing a song about god is not supposed to bring him to us in my opinion but mearly to express our love and admiration for him and our joy that he is with us.

but to the point my church has never sung that song :( ....pity.

my third fave song is the Hallelujah chorus though ^_^

hmm, we hardly ever do, we sing hymns (some pretty old) wich are pretty too, and rich in theology (lots of them, some of them I don't know why they're called hymns). We also sing some praise choruses, but I don't think we've ever sung it Sunday morning, possibly evening service

It's never sung in my church. 'Course, I am Orthodox, and we consider everything written after the year 1900 to be contemporary. :P ;)

Although I am not a big fan of modern praise music, "Shout to the Lord" is one exception. Most praise songs make my ears want to bleed, but SttL is pretty good. I despise those songs where all you have to do is replace "Jesus" with "baby" to make it a song about your girlfriend. Sick.

I prefer Byzantine traditional religious music, though. Those of you who like traditional hymns should listen to my sound bite, which is an Easter hymn of my church, "Come Receive the Light". Byzantine church music is the original "traditional church music". :)

My church's songs are like Top-40 radio. They'll do a certain number of songs in heavy rotation for a few moths, and then they drop off the songlist forever. We used to sing Shout to the Lord a lot, but never now.

I am on the Praise and Worship team in our church (keyboards) and we sing it every other month, approximately. We sing a lot of songs from the WoW worship series of albums. We try to introduce a new song every 3 or 4 weeks, and will do it for a couple of Sundays in a row, then it drops into the rotation. About the only hymns we do are the Southern Gospel variety, such as "I'll Fly Away". I don't really care for the Martin Luther style of traditional hymns, although the church I grew up in sang mostly those, and still does, according to my sister, who still attends there.

Our band consists of myself on keyboard, a lead guitar player who also leads the singing, and a drummer. We have two women and a man who are singers. I sing, but they know better than to give me a microphone. :)

This song has reached so many around the world and is sung by around 25-30 million churchgoers around the world each week! But would you believe it that at Hillsong they hardly ever sing it, if not only for special occasions. How has this song touched your life, and what is the importance of singing a 'new' song?

The church I am thinking of joining sings old hyms, but with a beat... I would love to hear the more modern music...but since I am new there I don't want to give the wrong impression by throwing around my opionions. So I just sing it in my car at the top of my lungs. There's a time and season for everything. "Shout to the Lord" is one of those 'timeless' songs, mebbe not as popular (yet) as "Amazing Grace" but there are always new songs being written.

Psalm 40:3 is a good example of singing a 'new' song.

I recently saw an interview on 60 minutes with Darlene Zschech. When she was asked about the song she sais she would never have belived that it would become so popular, and was astounded to see it be translated into so many languages. She was also very shocked to know that so many people sing it at church.

I must admit that the first time out church sang it was late last year... But we love and and sing it occasionally.

Congtrats to the Hillsong Music team for such a brilliant, worship filled song!

DeusAmante

This song has reached so many around the world and is sung by around 25-30 million churchgoers around the world each week! But would you believe it that at Hillsong they hardly ever sing it, if not only for special occasions. How has this song touched your life, and what is the importance of singing a 'new' song?

Psalm 40:3 "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many shall see and fear and put their trust in the Lord."
Hmm..good question Droobie. I don't know if I can honestly say it has touched my life in any specific way...I enjoy it, but I think it has been majorly worn out by the useage of it, in a way. The importance of singing a new song is that when you sing a song...over and over again the words often times do not contain the same value. You are just singing it out of rhetoric, and I don't think the Lord gets any glory out of that. I think the whole purpose OF singing is to think about the words and to praise Him. I am definitely not saying though that the same song that has been sung for the past 600 years or something cannot have a profound effect on someone's life. I am just saying that for me, a constant singing of a verse/chorus over and over again does nothing for me except provide a filler for the service.

Anyway....have a great day.

Any song can be overdone. Last year at the Christian school my daughter attended, they sang "Here I Am To Worship" almost every week in chapel. She got to where she almost hated the song.

I couldn't vote in this poll because I HAVE heard of the song -- have sung it quite often and loved it -- but my current church is hymns-only. Formerly, I had been blessed with a church that enjoyed music of all styles, but sadly, that is a rare exception to the rule. Too many churches think the "two types" (there are more variations than that) of church music must be kept separate.

No, it may not rhyme. But can you show us where in scripture that praise songs must rhyme?

Try this link for a clip video for the song from iworship:

http://www.integritymusic.com/music/music.php?target=nrp/iworship.html

Click on the dvd, then select the song

Although I, as you obviously do, have a love of the old hymns, I think it is very, very wrong to turn something off just because it might be "new." This is a beutiful song of praise to our Lord. :)

Hi!

The international worship group I attend to, we have ecumenical service on every Sunday afternoon... Lutherans & Anglicans together. There we use mainly the "Songs for Worship"...
During 2 months as I've been visiting there, we have sing this song every single Sunday.

In the service of The Lutheran Church in Finland I haven't ever heard this song. We have different hymn book there.

I remember when that song was all the rave; 1998. I love it, but it has gotten hollowed out over time. If I went to a church that sings that song every service, I'd eventually take an axe to the sound board. No song should be heard 400 times in eight years when there are ten's of thousands of songs which elevate the mind and glorify God. If I had to guess, and it's just a guess, I'd say that more than half who's churches sing it twice or more a month are Pentecostal churches that play alot of emotional and repetitious songs for their mezmorizing effects. Am I right?

I'm currently having some difficulty getting to service due to some issues with my job, but back before my last move I was going to a service where we sung it all the time. Love the song.

we used to sing it a lot but over the past few years we have introduced a lot of new songs. Although it is an older song I still love it.

I like this song as well. However, where I fellowship contemp. music is not typically sung.

yea, I've heard of it and I've heard it (back when I was an evangelical)
Now that I'm mainstream, I don't hear it anymore.

My church has a LOT of songs in the song rotation, so we probably sing Shout to the Lord a few times a year.
