What does the age on a pet mean?

I got Muttley from the adoption center, so I'm not sure what his age means. Is it something the person who originally created him set, or is it based on how long he's been around?

Redneck Crow, the pet's age is roughly equal to the number of days since it was created by its original owner. :) I actually think I know Muttley's original owner, but for the life of me can't remember his/her CF name! ^_^

Thanks, everyone! I guess Muttley's must be just over a year old. I've changed his color a couple of times, but for now I'm satisfied with the rest.
