in the bible in matthew 1 shows us the linage of jesus to King David through Josph mary's betroved. If mary was a virgin ( which i do believe that she was)
how was jesus related to king david ? God had to fufill his promise to David stated in 1 chronicles 17: 11 says " one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne for ever. "

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but because of Mary's marriage to St. Jospeh she was legally a descendent of David.

Yes, that's what I understand. there is an excellent (albeit RC) presentation on the lineage and what it means - from adam to Jesus - it is called Our Father's Plan and is done by Scott Hahn and another gentlemen. It is a series of videos so I imagine $$, but perhaps it is on the EWTN site to watch - it is well worth it!

Scott does a great Job, but I think Matthew and Luke did it before Scott.

Since it is written in Matthew and Luke that David was an ancestor of Jesus through Joseph, it is probably safe to say that Jesus has a legitimate relationship to David through Joseph.

I'm not sure how Mary would have a relationship with David. If you follow Mary's heritage through her relationship with Elizabeth, you will see that Jesus is also a descendant of Aaron, the priest. (Luke 1:5). That is not to say that Mary is not related to David. I just don't know how to prove it.

Each genealogy of Jesus points us to a different heritage of the Lord. The genealogy of Matthew points us to the royal heritage in David and Solomon. The genealogy of Luke points us to the prophetic heritage in David and Nathan. The genealogy of Elizabeth and Mary points us to the priestly heritage in Aaron.

After some study, I stand corrected. The genealogy in Luke is that of Mary. While Joseph is named, the ancestry follows back through Joseph's father in law, not his father. Matthew's genealogy and Luke's genealogy list two different fathers for Joseph. Scholars say one is the line of his natural father, and the other one is his father in law, Heli, Mary's father.

So, Luke's genealogy does show Mary's relationship to David. Mary's relationship to Elizabeth may be through her mother's family or through a direct ancestor's marriage.
