Hiya!
I am a new member to CF and have just accepted Jesus back into my heart within the last week. I grew up with God beat into my head and ended up doing my own thing for about 5-7 years.
I am currently Deployed over seas and am facing punitive charges for something extremely stupid that I have done. Something that in the civilian word you cannot get charged for. Too be honest, I became extrmely drunk and argued with a superior. He told me to get some sleep and I told him to shove it. It was not the smartest thing I have ever done.
Anyway, now I am extremely worried about what will happen to me. I have a wife and children and do not want to ruin my life for ONE stupid mistake.
To sum this up, I have a New Testament Bible with me. I started reading Matthew and am almost finished. It makes me feel good inside when I read the Bible.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what chapter I should start on next? I believe my bible also has Psalms. I would really appreciate it if someone could give me any words of encouragement.
Thanks All!!

You can't really understand one without the other.
John refers extensively to Genesis.
"In the Begining God created..." Genesis
"In the Begining was the Word..." John
And the entire gospel is written so as to show the parallels between Moses and Jesus, showing Christ as the fulfilment of the Law of Moses.

You can read the Bible on the web.
Here is Genesis:

Genesis and John are good for starters. 1 John is also good (it's the first of his three letters). For your situation, outside of what you'll read in Matthew, Romans and Luke I think would help you out.

James is a good book to read

If I had to choose one book to start with...it would be John. After that skip over to Romans and onto Galatians, Ephesians, and Hebrews. That's just to begin with. Do not get into Revelations yet, that entails serious studying! But don't neglect it. Take time in what you're studying. If you have questions, then search out a godly person who understands the bible and can help explain the meaning. Or you can come on here and post a question. :)
I am truly sorry about your situation, but keep this in mind:
Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

I'd recommend John, then Acts, then 1st and 2nd Corinthians.

Read the Gospel of John and then answer. May God richly bless you.

If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the gospel of John.

The running favorite here is John, and I agree it is my favorite.
However, you really can't understand Christ without the Old Testament.
When Christ and the Apostles talk about scripture, they are talking about the Old Testament.
Now, that is a lot to read, but reading Genesis is not that much and it make John better.

Yes I do know him, like I said I excepted Him back into my heart last week. I am alone right now. There are no "Christian Mentors" (That I know of yet) to guide me.
I know Him to the best of my abilities right now. I will read John, and I am trying to get a bible sent to me so that I can read the old testiment too. The last few mail convoys have not made it to my location.
Thanks everyone for the help! Any more suggestions are welcomed!!

Great that you are getting back on track. Make sure that you don't get on many of the wrong ones that are being offered these days. Get informed. Here is a direct link to my links site, my site and the ones I link too, discernment links, do research about doctrine, specifically false doctrine. I always say that ignorance is no excuse. Take a look if you are interested. http://www.jamesfive19.com/Links.html . Some are more, some less conservative. Everyone should make up his own mind.
I think that the book of John would be great too, and Romans, my favorite passages are there.
Here is a place where you can download the bible from. http://www.onlinebible.net/ . Hope that all helps.
God Bless You Don E,

Your comment about having it beat into your head by your parents made me wonder if you had indeed ever accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. If you have He has never left you, it's just a matter of you turning back towards Him. That's why I asked the way I did. I meant no offense by it, it's just that I myself tried to run from God for a few years and I can relate. (I actually had a staff sergent tackle me one time because I was so drunk I was about to wander off base. So I can relate to that too!...:D )
Until you can get your hands on a hard copy of the bible, use that link discernomatic provided for the online bible. Your situation is probably why it is provided through that ministry in the first place.
I am praying that the Lord will soften the hearts of your superiors towards you and that they will not take rank or money from you.
God bless you and keep you,

Thank You,
I was not offended at all LOL..
When I was young I did know Jesus VERY well. We worshiped him 24/7 some times and my whole life was God. I guess as I became older I wanted to experience the world. So I did. I smartened up in my younger days and started to get my life togather. Actually, right now my life isn't a wreck. I may be punished for something small and insignificant, but if I am, I will keep trying to walk along "Gods Path." It is just really hard knowing that I am starting out again.. The path is gonna suck for a while (lol).
I just want to follow Jesus, I am here for support =). Thank you for your prayers Asaph!

Don, I realize that John seems to be the favourite book of those who are in here and recommending it, and I definitely agree that John is an incredible book... I do agree with the person who said that the Old Testament is also a VERY wise idea. But by looking at your situation right now, I'm not sure these would be where I would start you off with.
You can start on Romans if you would like, but I would actually recommend Luke and Acts, or even Philemon... Actually, if you read through Philemon, it talks about a certain runaway slave who followed Paul, and became a fellow worker with Paul, and he is then charged by Paul to carry this letter (along with the letter to the Colossians) to his former master, Philemon, the bishop/pastor in Colossae. Actually, I still think Luke and Acts is the best choice, because the language and meanings are a lot easier to understand and interpret (especially in light also of Matthew, which you just read), as Luke is a lot closer to Matthew than John is. Then, after Luke is Acts, which is really the "sequal" to Luke's Gospel. I think there will be much inspiration found there...

Without a doubt the book of Romans and mainly chapter 8 is where i always sink myself into when the storms arise. It will show you that no matter what or who is against you, as long as your a child of God NOTHING AND I MEAN NOTHING can happen to you that He wouldn't allow. Also ,as stated the Gospel of John is a great chapter to learn about the Deity of Christ.

When I came back to God, I was told to read John and then the rest of the gosbels. If you comes across verses that jump out at you. Look at your foot notes (if you have them) and follow the verse that are given. Also in the back of your bible look up words or condintions that are on your mind. And read those verses.
It is a very good thing to be back in the word. And Prayer is wonderful. I Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strenghtens me.
God Bless

What do you mean you accepted Jesus "back into" your heart? Are you saying He was there before but left? That you were once saved but lost it? I don't believe you can be born again more than once or lose salvation once you have it. Maybe your'e just speaking of a recommittment or rededication to Christ after backsliding. Once you're Christ's, you're sealed by the Holy Spirit and are His eternally imho. Of course, there are those who have a different opinion.

Every New Testament book is obviously worthy of your attention. I think these three will give you a firm foundation. God bless!

Perhaps the Book of Romans is one of my favorite New Testament books.
Book of Romans, a GREAT book of doctrines. Written by the Apostle PAUL. The actual theme is "Gospel of God".
The Whole World is Guilty before God (1:1-3:20)
Justification by Faith in Christ (3:21-5:21)
Sancification through Union with Christ in His Death & Resurrection (6:1-8:39)
The Problem with Jewish Unbelief (9:1-11:36)
Christian Life and Service for the Glory of God (12:1-16:27)
In summary:
We all have sinned and seperated from God. We are Justified by Grace through Faith in Jesus Christ and we have union with God. Through our union with God, we are Sancified through living in the Holy Spirit. And finally, we are to live in a biblical and christian living.

Romans and then Galations is always good...and plenty of folks have pointed those out...however, specific to your situation, try Psalm 51.
