What is the cure for computer addiction?

I do a lot of chatting the end of the day. I get on the most times when I'm nursing...partly because its the only chair I feel comfortable in. I do my bible studies ( not the straight through reading though) Love to debate issues and share thoughts. think about peoples responses...Mostly torah observant stuff. Partly I think because my hubby does not like to talk about it, or debate it, or investigate it. He wants a short pro/con sheet with printed out verses. (Time is a premium thing with his full time job and side business/ so I don't begrudge him that desire to be efficient). Hubby says I'm addicted to the computer, but I think of it more as a versitile tool. Very useful one since I'm here most the time teaching, training, cleaning, sewing, organizing, fixing. When I'm too tired to move my body but my mind won't quit, I can come to a board and learn till my mind winds down.

Hello:

Personal opinions here <insert disclaimers that state any resemblence to others opinions, living or dead is purely coincidental>...

If the computer use, or anything else becomes what one spends the most time on, to the decline of one's family and one's worship to Hashem, then it is an addiction bordering upon idolatry.

If you're nursing a precious one, your interractions outside the home are probably limited. If you are doing your bible studies and fellowship online, managing to maintain the household, relationship to hubby, and caring for your baby (and others?) G-d bless you! At this time, it sounds like you're balancing it quite well.

If computer use, or anything else becomes predominate in one's life, see out an accountability partner. Someone who you trust and who will hold you accountable in a biblical sense. It may be a tough choice to find someone who will hold you accountable but not condem you or gossip about you. It would be a person who would be prayerfully found. They may in turn want you to hold them accountable for something they struggle with (weight, television, temptation, etc).

What one believes in, one does. I truly feel the most joy in praise and worship. Modern life intrudes too much, I have to work, pay the bills, cut the grass, on-and-on. One has to keep their eyes on HIM, their heart on HIM, through a concentrated effort, or it seems that the world, or Satan, will fritter away our time and therefore we will not be where Hashem wants us to be.

If there is any doubt, I am including myself in this rambling advice. I must be on the lookout always as there is so much distraction in my busy life. I want to be available and effective for HIM at all times, not rendered inert by the world or by Satan.

Be blessed my Brothers and Sisters,

So how do we reach a balance?
Truly when there was no computer and no TV my family got all my attention, but I got burnt out and depressed.

When God is first in all things we can have a better balance. There is a time to be on the computer and a time to stay away from the computer. I probably should not spend every nursing session in front of the computer, since that time online means that baby is not hearing my voice. IE Read a book to siblings baby learns to hear my voice and pay attention.

I guess I need to wind down and limit the number of personal responses I give to people so my circle of friends does not interfere with family. It can get long when there is a number of people wanting complicated responses through email or posts....

Well speaking of winding down...need to snooze before baby wakes up for a midmorning snack attack. Don't want to be on line for that feeding. Just me and her.
Thanks for the thoughtful response.
Pray for God to help me get rid of more clutter this weak and discern what is needful and what is harmful...clutter wastes time. Worst part is the fabric/craft stuff.

I too nurse at the computer. The computer is also my source of lively hood (I am a work-at-home-mom) So it necessarily occupies the greater part of my day. And when it is deadline time for me all the household chores except for cooking and caring for the baby gets neglected.

Banannayou have soooo many kids Bananna, I would need breaks to unwind myself....Hey what am I saying...I do need breaks to unwind!

and you do way more than me each day! Right now I have had a two week break of peace and quiet before my gymnast is out of school and starts filling the house with activity.(My oldest and youngest are home and are real late sleepers:clap: ) so my leasure time will end soon... remember on the other forum when I said that my time there was an escape from reality...I have been real careful since then cuz I was getting all my attention from my friends on line and not my family at home...that was not good. :sigh:

My frantic summer is starting tomorrow then my online activity will diminish rapidly (one -two hours a day^_^ )

I was nursing my baby once in a restraunt and a man asked me to go do THAT in the bathroom...I said no way you go eat your lunch in the bathroom!

Lo Bananna,

How does teaching, learning, witnessing, sharing and ministering the word of God be considered idolotry?

Here in the middle of the Bible Belt, where those like us are looked upon as freaks, cults or worse, one needs to be where there are others who share our beliefs. When I am among seekers of truth, I am most happy and feel closer to my God.

If your computer time is Korban to you, keep it up!

Shalom.

Or tells the lady at the next table to put a napkin over her cleavage. Oh, well it takes all kinds!

LOL@Tishri1! It makes me so mad when I hear about women being harassed for doing what they were designed by God to do. Most states have laws allowing women to breast feed in public. Sad really that there has to be laws to protect the ability to provide for your child. Personally, I was really nervous about it at first, but now I could care less what anyone thinks or the dirty looks they might give me. I just stare back at them. So far no one has had the courage to actually approach me and tell me not to do it. I guess the attitude comes with experience. :D

Zemeriah - I do contract work as a newsletter designer. (I met the company owner on-line she was due about the same time I was in April '04.) My clients are all over the US - from Florida to Hawaii. I started doing it back when my 14 month old was only 3 months old. Not sure how I'm going to juggle it when I have 2 under 2. Guess I will just figure it out as I go along. It's only "part-time" work but some weeks feel like full time!

I was amused by one response long time ago. As a tip to the offending waiter, she changed her baby on the table and left the diaper.:D Probably did not get the allusion though.

Funny how in USA people have such hangups... it stems from the perverted use of breasts to sell everything. Their primary use is breast feeding and hubby pleasing... but this perversion that breastfeeding is the equivilent of sex in public is rediculous, considering how much breast they have plastered all over the billboads for advertisement. The restaurant probably had a spicey add displaying cleavage on tv inviting you to try their restaurant too. What hypocracy.

I'm not comfortable with a busy baby and hanging out there, but so what if a woman is. Everyone has seen more in our society for pure laciviousness and greed.
JMO GOOOOO Breastfeeding mamas.

 Hello good buddy,
I think the principal of obediance says that my family is my primary mission field. My husband is the most critical and them my children and then extended family, then friends.

Anything that causes me to disobey God makes at least Me the idol if not that thing. The computer is just the link to uses and services. Nutral of itself. The I in idol is for me using anything in a manner that would steal glory from God or belittle His wonderful name.
JMO
Thanks for the encouragement though. God has truly blessed me here. But too much cake makes one fat and lazy.

Yes isolation definitely causes greater need. Its a tough balancing act.
