 Paul uses the word 'circumcision a lot.

Sometimes he means 'Jew' (circumcision) and Gentile (uncircumcision.)

Other times he means the actual physical act of circumcision.

I am beginning to think that when Paul uses the word 'circumcision' sometimes he uses it at short hand for 'ritual conversion to Judaism under rabbinic halakah' (which involved circumcision, immersion, and sacrifice.)

It may also be possible that he has 'ritual conversion' in mind when he uses the phrase 'works of law.'

What do you guys make of this idea?

I think there is a high probability that you are correct...

That's the million dollar question Tishri ... how do we get the church to see that they've been interpretting Paul wrong for so many years. Our pastor (in our private talks with him) as well as our other christian friends love to bring up Paul references and we just sit there and say, "But that's not what he meant ..." They usually don't believe us though because, you know, they have the history of what the church has preached to back them up.

Have you heard this comment before? "Thats very convincing, but don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up."
"I can eat food sacrificed to idols, idols are nothing."
1Cor.8:9 Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.

10 For if any one sees you, a man of knowledge, at table in an idol’s temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?

11 And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died.

12 Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.

Yeah you can very well sin against Yeshua!
