Since we had the little tsunami scare here the other day, and then I heard about another quake or two today I thought I'd look up how many quakes we have had in the world recently.
As of the time I am posting this there have been 8 quakes in the world today. Whole bunch yesterday and the day before...
Worldwide Earthquake Activity in the Last Seven Days (http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/)
I also found this portion of the web site to be interesting as it shows how many total quakes in a year and their strength.
Earthquake Facts and Statistics (http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/eqlists/eqstats.html)
For the most part it appears that the number of quakes occuring around the world is increasing. Although some of that can be contibuted to more and better detection equipment. The number of large 7.0+ quakes appears to stay about the same from year to year.

I didn't hear about it, way up north, until it was over.
Thank you for the sites, Wags. I want to find a place that tells about that earthquake in @ 1955-6 in northern California. That was the one that scared me. I actually cried! But I was a little kid. It was amazing that our house was not damaged; a lot of newer ones sure were! Have you two lived there a long time? Are you used to them?

Ahavah and I both live in Northren Oregon.... (she is further north than I am)
I used to live in the Aluetian Islands in Alaska which is home to almost daily quakes. And yes I got used to them.

I was just wondering about all this ... we are in Southern CA and felt the one on Sunday in the desert and the one yesterday in Yucaipa. Both woke me up (I was napping with my boys yesterday ;) ). It just seems like all of a sudden there are quite a few earthquakes ... and one on Shavuot really piqued my interest too ... Hmm ...

Oh, good night! Brain blip! I knew that! Sorry!
I was born in California, and we moved back a few years after my first husband died. Although the town has constant earthquakes, my poor children were anxious to experience one, but it was a couple years before they did. We would have them, I would ask, and they would say they hadn't felt it. My daughter finally felt one, when it woke her. I went screeching up the stairs to comfort my children, but it never woke my son. I ran to my daughter's room, and she just said, "Was that an earthquake?" I said yes, and she responded, "Okay," and went back to sleep. My son finally felt one once when he was sitting at our piano. He was delighted.
Oddly, we now live where historically, there have been fewer earthquakes, but the ones we have had have been higher on the Richter than all the time I lived in CA with my children! They have felt those!

That's very intersting when I was growing up I recall that anythin over 6.? was regarded as large.
Media boiling frog syndrome just change the definition of large and the masses will never realise that something is happening.
Shalom,
Mikhail

The definition of large being 7.0+ was mine... the website breaks data down with out labeling it.

I just looked up the earthquake that was the greatest I have ever been in, and it was a 6.6. Guess that's a quaker. Most of the ones I have felt have been around 3.0 - 4.2 or so. There was one on my first husband's and my wedding day in St. Louis, Mo, 1968. That one wasn't listed where I looked, but it felt like about a 3.4 or so. St. Louis rarely had earthquakes one could feel.

I found the St. Louis earthquake, and it was actually a 5.5, but it was centered in southern Illinois. Guess that's why it felt like less in St. Louis.

I've always lived between LA County and San Diego County ... I still remember the Northridge quake, which was a 6.7. We were in San Diego at the time and it woke one of my roommates and me up. We thought it was a local quake til we put on the news. I also remember the Whittier quake (1988 or 1989) and the Landers quake (1992). I was up in LA county for those. Maybe it's just from growing up with earthquakes, but ever since the Whittier quake (I was home alone that morning getting ready for school), they just don't scare me. But this recent activity has my interest level raised as I just wonder ... How long now God?

Yeah! I can't go to shul tomorrow (came down with a nasty virus today), but I wonder if the subject will come up??

Guess it's flu, not a virus. I have literally drank half a gallon of Tang since work yesterday!

I'm sorry you're sick Velcro ... that's no fun. :( I'm curious if our rabbi will speak of it ... he definitely likes to speak of end times (he feels the end is close) but he also said last week he was hoping to start a series on niddah this week, and I'm quite curious to see what he has to say about that! ;)

me too... he did say he would shake the heavens and the earth one more time real good
Isaiah 13:12-13 2 I will make mortal man (1a)scarcer than pure gold, And mankind than the (b)gold of Ophir.
13 Therefore I shall make the (a)heavens tremble, And (b)the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In (c)the day of His burning anger.
Joel 2:10-11 10 Before them the earth (a)quakes, The heavens tremble, The (b)sun and the moon grow dark, And the stars lose their brightness.
11 And the LORD (a)utters His voice before b)His army; Surely His camp is very great, For (c)strong is he who carries out His word. The (d)day of the LORD is indeed great and very awesome, And e)who can endure it?
Joel 3:15-16 5 The (a)sun and moon grow dark, And the stars lose their brightness.
16 And the LORD (a)roars from Zion And (b)utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the (c)heavens and the earth tremble. But the LORD is a (d)refuge for His people And a (e)stronghold to the sons of Israel.
Haggai 2:5-7 5 'As for the (1a)promise which I (2)made you when you came out of Egypt, (3)My (b)Spirit is abiding in your midst; (c)do not fear!' 6 "For thus says the LORD of hosts, (a)'Once more (1)in a (b)little while, I am going to (c)shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.
7 'And I will shake (a)all the nations; and (1)they will come with the (b)wealth of all nations; and I will (c)fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.
Haggai 2:20-21 20 Then the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the (a)twenty-fourth day of the month saying,
21 "Speak to (a)Zerubbabel governor of Judah saying, 'I am going to (b)shake the heavens and the earth.
2 Peter 3:7-12 7 But (a)the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for (b)fire, kept for c)the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, (a)beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and (b)a thousand years as one day.
9 (a)The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but (b)is patient toward you, c)not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
10 But (a)the day of the Lord (b)will come like a thief, in which (c)the heavens (d)will pass away with a roar and the (e)elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and (f)the earth and (1)its works will be (2)burned up.
11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 (a)looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which (b)the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the c)elements will melt with intense heat!

I forgot the earthquake of 28 Feb 2001 up here. I looked it up, and it was a 6.8, which surprises me. Where we were, it felt more like a 3.6 - 3.8.
