There is an thread that started in Questions about Christianity and ended up in Gen. Apologetics.

And there is a guy called MuandNu who used to be a Christian, but decided to leave Christ because of how God is portrayed in the OT, however he did not start the thread.

He is asking questions/making comments about Numbers 31.

So I thought maybe you MJ's may be able to help.

Here is the thread.

I'm not surprised much by this. I have heard this a number of times in the past; however, it's rarely by someone who has read the entire Tanakh.

I was debating with someone in the GA forum who, because of how God is portrayed in the OT, simply dicarded it as not being the word of God.

When I was growing up, the rare verses we would read from the Tanakh were always painted in the light of the G-d of war versus the G-d of love of the BH.

However, when I finally decided to read the entire Word, my eyes were enlightened to the Truth of the matter. I got to see G-d's undying love for His Bride (Israel). I got to see a parent with more patience than I might ever understand. I got to see a G-d who gave women more rights than most civilizations. I got to see a L-rd with more emotion than any human can express. I can go on and on.

If anyone tries to separate the aspects of G-d based on the Tanakh and BH. I always recommend that they read the entire Word in sequence. If they choose not to, then I dismiss the issue. It's impossible to judge any move by watching segments. You have to see the whole thing. The same can be said with the Word of G-d. Check it ALL out and then make your decision.

I would have never known that after seeing some fo the posts by atheists and agnostics. Thank you for sharing.

They asked Mel Gibson if he believed all of the bible and he said

"I believe all of it or none of it!"

Good Answer. And in the same mold:

"If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself." --Augustine

Two more cents.....

From the preface to The Essentials Of Biblical Hebrew by Kyle M. Yates, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1938:

"Professor Ernest Sellin has given much encouragement to one who seeks to lead students to learn Hebrew. He asserts that a working knowledge of the language is obligatory inless the preacher (or anyone else) is willing to become a helpless plaything in the hands of unfair critics of the Old Testament. Surely we must do all that we can to stimulate a genuine interest in the study and then present the facts of grammar and syntax in a manner that men will be enabled to learn to be interpreters of the Word..."

So we see that people generally find what they are looking for, if you want to see it as "bad" it will indeed be "bad", if want to find "the mean and nasty G-d of the OT" this is what you will see - YIKES!
