There is a view of the fundamentalist position that regards it as intolerant. I would like to discuss this and would like other fundamentalists thoughts and feelings as well.
In my opinion the word tolerance (or intolerance) is used way too often. Many times it is used when a person feels threatened in any way - even if imagined. If someone is an irresponsible land developer and is harming the nearby streams and killing fish should we tolerate it? What should we be intolerant of?
I would like to list off a few things that I am tolerant of and a few things that I can and can't tolerate. Feel free to do the same. Please do not get into a debate over someone's specifics or it will ruin the purpose of this thread.
I am tolerant of:
People of all races.
People of all economic backgrounds.
Animals right to live ( Proverbs 12:10 (http://bible.cc/proverbs/12-10.htm) ).
Eating animals.
Being vegan.
Wearing leather.
Wearing fur.
The belief that wearing fur is mean.
The belief that wearing fur keeps you warm.
Someone cutting me off in traffic (hard one sometimes).
Slow people.
Free will up to the point that it causes harm.
I am intolerant of:
Preachers that sell anything in church. (John 2:16 (http://bible.cc/john/2-16.htm))
Preachers that live in open sin. (http://www.bethstroud.info/)
Bad doctrine. (http://www.watchtower.org/ http://scriptures.lds.org/bm/contents)
The idea that there is more than one way into heaven (John 14:6 (http://bible.cc/john/14-6.htm)).
Poison in my drinking water or food.
An attempt to harm someone that I have the ability to protect.
Abortion. ( Jeremiah 1:5 (http://bible.cc/jeremiah/1-5.htm) )
Cruelty (Proverbs 12:10 (http://bible.cc/proverbs/12-10.htm))
Lactose ( hey... thats me)
Being intolerant of murder is not a bad thing.
Being intolerant of poison is not a bad thing.
Being intolerant of x race is a bad thing.
Tolerating that which should not be tolerated is not good.
Being intolerant of that which should not be tolerated is not bad.
Thoughts?
