I would like to know about some of the Saints, but really don't know how to go about it. Coming from a protestant background, I've never really had anything to do with them, but seeing how they seem to be important, what with all the icons covering church walls, inspiring stories, and whatnot, it would certaintly be good to know something about some of them.
Can any of you recommend how I might best go about this? Books, websites, icons, etc. would be most helpful.

This is a great resource for saints' lives...
If I were you I'd go to our "patron saints" thread (http://www.christianforums.com/t1634825-patron-saints.html), and look up the names on there at the above website. :)

The easiest way is to read their lives [hagiographies]. If you find a saint that's interesting to you, look him/her up in the Prologue or the Synaxarion or google him/her. Some saints are more important than others, like St. Anthony or St. George or St. Athanasius, you should probably read about them before you read about St. Sergius of Shukhtom [whom we comemmorate today]. The reason to acquaint yourself with the lives of the saints is that they show how a farmer became a holy farmer, how a priest became a holy priest, how a warrior became a holy warrior, how a wife became a holy wife, how a teacher became a holy teacher, how a modern mother became a holy modern mother, how a king became a holy king...

is a pretty good site for very brief hagiographies. www.oca.org (http://www.oca.org) and www.goarch.org (http://www.goarch.org) also offer some good resources. www.roca.org (http://www.roca.org) also contains some hagiographies.
I don't know why they don't mention Sts. Cyprian and Justina on the OCA site. The guy who was Baptized on the same day as I was at our church has St. Cyprian for his patron and we both go to an OCA parish.
As I mentioned in another thread, though I forget which one, the lives of the Saints is the living expression of the theology of the Church. All those nice long "-ology" words are great, but hard to really put into your life without seeing how it has been done.

Really??? That surprises me; I wonder where I read Cyprian's life then... as I know I did (along with Justina's...)

Getting to Know You
from The King and I
[ANNA]
[Spoken] It's a very ancient saying,
But a true and honest thought,
That if you become a teacher,
By your pupils you'll be taught.
[Singing] As a teacher I've been learning --
You'll forgive me if I boast --
And I've now become an expert,
On the subject I like most.
[Spoken] Getting to know you.
[Singing] Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.
Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of tea.
[ANNA AND THE MOTHERS]
Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.
Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
[ANNA]
My cup of tea.
[ALL]
Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say
Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day.
Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say
Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day .. by ... day.

Oh my God, Llauralin, do you realize that you're one year minus one day older than I am? I was born on October 20, 1987. WEIRD.
