There was a short interlude sketch in Monty Python where a guy is lying in bed (in a hospital I think) being attended by a doctor. A character dressed as a 17th century French explorer comes in and sticks a Tricolore in his chest and says “I claim this chest in the name of France”, then someone dressed as a Spanish explorer of the same period comes in sticks a flag on his chest and says “I claim this chest in the name of Spain”. I can’t remember what came next.
I hope you weren’t expecting something more interesting! When I saw I was the first to post in the thread that sketch just flashed through my head. It doesn't take much to humor me.
Vive la voie ancienne!

Still one of my favorite books. So much in only 130 pages. You know, there are certain books, writings, and stories that send electricity through my body. This was one of them. There and certain things that I am extremely cautious to even quote, because to quote one paragraph apart from the rest of the book, tends to take something away. This is one of those books.

How does a person delete all their posts? I didn't know it could be done.Sounds like someone got hit by an "emergency ban" or whatever it is called. Basically all your posts go invisible (and your profile too IIRC) which also makes any threads started by that person go invisible too. They can only be accessed through the "subscribed threads" list in your "User CP".
All the posts are still in the database, the forum simply does not display them while this ban is in force.

I had thought we had unlimited access on both my family's dialup accounts, on AT&T and MSN. Turns out only MSN is unlimited. MSN is the one I use normally so it was no problem (I use internet A LOT) but AT&T is only 100 hours per month which I used in, like, a week.
Well, luckily my parents still love me. :D
In this country there is only one land-line company, and they rip us off big time. One pays $10 per hour.:sigh: They have a special system for dial-up. You pay $12 extra a month, then each dialup session is capped at S1.60 no mater how long you stay on-line. But I've switched to using my cell phone company and my cell phone is my modem. You pay for data transferred ($0.30 a MB) not time on-line. It's faster too. There are other options I'm considering also.
My sympathy!!!

Hey my friends!
Well, I've been a bit MIA lately. My parents and brother are here visiting for my graduation. I graduated today!! YAY  ! I have some minor things I have to finish and then it will all be done... more the fault of my thesis readers than mine.
I added a picture of my grad (it was hot in that black thing... ). Well, time for a nap and such...
I haven't been able to make liturgy for two weeks now but it's halfway to Pentecost on Wed and we have 7AM!!!! liturgy... and then my parents leave on Wed evening... Finally some peace before we head to St Tikhon's on Sunday for the pilgrimage. I can't wait!
Congrats Khaleas!!! You look great. I bet you were hot in that.:D

Congratulations to you! What's your degree?
Thank you!
I got my Bachelors of Science in Geography with a minor in Political Science.
Now I'm debating on going to graduate school. I'd like to start right away but I might just take the fall off as we just found out my husband is deploying (Navy) sometimes just before Xmas. He is flying out to the boat so I don't get any work up time where I can get used to him being gone or contact with the other wives... but fortunately he won't be gone the whole 6 months. Last night I had a major breakdown... it's beginning to settle in that he'll be gone. I'm usually pretty good and strong but last night just sucked... So I'm debating on taking fall off to spend some more time with him and we're having our church wedding (and reception) in October too.

Kolya, I was just thinking about Heaven, after that post to Shelb... its a grand thing to think about.
Here you are talking to St. Peter, whilst waiting for the Divine Liturgy to start, and he is not very happy because St. John Chrysostom has the homily again. Then you are being pushed by St. King David who is full on arguing with St. Romanos the Melodist about tones of the New Liturgy.
Somewhere in the corner you can hear Archangel Michae selling the: NEW NEW TESTAMENT, hot of the press... Must buy, money goes toward bying more incense, we are burning to much... NEW NEW TESTAMENT....
Behind you, Ss. Adam and Eve and Abraham and Sarah are discussing the new plum jam that St. Mary Magdalene has made. And couple of Iconographs headed by St. Luke are trying to ask Theotokos to let them paint a new icon but she is to busy talking to all the saved.
And we are still waiting for the Divine Liturgy to start...

Dear Friends,
Would you please pray for me? How can I best express my need? I guess I would have to say that since the beginning of this year, I have been on a very intense voyage of discovery. Knowing Christ has been the passion of my life for the past 20 or so years. With all my heart, I want to know Him more. For the past 6 months of so, this desire has led me to a study of Orthodoxy.
I think I have come to a place where I need to find some clarity - and soon. This search is consuming me - my time, as well as my mental and spiritual energy. I realize it's not a bad thing to be consumed with Christ, but this is something different. It's a war in my soul, and I need deliverance.
Would you please pray for me, specifically that God would make His path crystal clear to me? I know that I am slow of heart and dull of hearing, but I do believe (as Christ promised) that all who seek will find. Please pray that God will be merciful to me, and His answer will come speedily.
Thank you so much in advance for your prayers...

That IS a grand thing to think about! But you know what Stephan, I stand waiting for DL to start here in my local Parish, and they ARE here with me today too, I just can't see them yet! It is a great though to look up into "emptyness" of the space between the dome and floor and actually think that some noetic being is there protecting the faithful.
As far as the heaven is concerned, I often think how it is all going to work? I mean I know it is like a blind, deaf and mute trying to explaing the Church and Divine liturgy on earth, but I am still thinking about how it will all work out... and you know what? I got no idea.

What can I say? All of Heaven is there for you right now. I know the spot you are standing on very well. I think most of us have been there. But like I told someone else today, I'm a Saint under Construction, so are we all. And those around me must watch out for falling masonry! I'm sure. They sent me samples of their other products along with my order, and subscribed me to The Harvest. It comes to my parents' mailbox, though, so it kind of freaks them out and they just forward it to me with no comment. :D

Does anyone care to comment on Whorf or the Whorf hypothesis?
I find linguistics very interesting ... and the Word became flesh .... why did St. John begin his gospel that way?
Our words can be so creative. And stringing words into sentences can be done with infinite creativity.
God's Word is also creative ... and we can share in God's creativity when we write or sing a hymn.

Paulaner is medium dark but is a wheat bier. Wheat biers are much fuller in body and taste than biers made without wheat. Weltenberger is a full bodied boch which is a rich brown color. A nice dark bier. Koelsch is the only true German pale ale. It is crisp and freshing but it still has some flavor and body to it (unlike the stuff that is made by Budweiser, Coors, Miller, etc.) I did not tell you my minor in college was in German Bier Drinking did I?

Now, you have got to be kidding?
I know some people who work for the two Breweries we have here in Los Agneles -- every time I pass them I get sick by all that yeast in the air. Smells so good but it makes me gag. I wonder how the people who live in the area tolerate it.
Is the wheat beer made of 100 percent wheat?
Is the other beer made from barley?
I know they put hops in all beers, isn't that true?
I guess that is what gives it a tranquillizing effect, yes?

Wheat bier is not 100% wheat, it has hops and water and probably some other minor things in it. But then it is brewed in accord with the German Purity Law so I doubt there is much more than Wheat, Water, Hops, yeast and maybe malt in it. I think the other biers are made with barley, or something like that, but I am not quite sure. There are some beers which are made with rice (such as Bud and the like) and those are just plain nasty to me. I am not sure what exactly goes into a Boch bier, but they are quite tasty-very dark, full bodied. The tranquilizing effect from the bier comes from the acohol which is produced because of yeast fermentation. As for the comment about majoring in German bier drinking, that was just a joke! :)

I learned to drink beer in Germany, while living on an American Air Force base when I was 17. Great stuff! I only learned two phrases well in German (to my shame), but they were important ones - how to order beer, and how to find the bathroom.;)
I still drink my beers on the warm side, as I learned to do over there. They taste better that way (if they have any taste to start with - a characteristic sadly lacking in many American brews).
Prost!

We'll be renting a house (God-willing & hopefully). We still own a house in Alabama (long story) and don't want to own in two markets. We're having a hard enough time juggling rent & mortage payments with only my wife employed and a newborn. Our house in Alabama was being rented, but the tenant up and moved in the middle of the night and disappeared virtually without a trace (we know he went to Mississippi, but the amount of money owed to us isn't worth trying to track down, we'd spend more tracking it that we'd end up getting.) We're now trying to get a new tenant and are having to pay in both places until we find one. We can't sell yet as the house is in an as yet uncompleted (but almost complete) subdivision. Nobody's going to buy one lived in for two years if they can buy one on the same street that's never been lived in. So we wait until they're finished and then hopefully sell it off and hopefully rent it in the meantime.

I was given an Orthodox Christian name at birth and thus did not have the option of taking an Orthodox name upon Chrismation. When I was confirmed as a Catholic I took the name John in honor of my friend the priest-martyr St. John Kaiser. Sometimes I think I should change my name to John in his honor.

I too had an Orthodox name at birth eventhough I'm a convert. I wanted to take another name, but my priest said I should keep it since I was in fact named for that saint (and he said it'd help reduce "conversion friction" with the parentals.)
